After impressing during 6 months trial at English club Liverpool, where he played alongside future teammates Luis Suárez and Steven Gerrard, Miguel signed for Valencia CF in Spain in 2005 but failed to make an appearance until January 2006 due to work permit issues.

The move saw him reunited with former Liverpool teammate Xabi Alonso who had been appointed captain of Porto upon his arrival.

However, it would not be long before tensions between both players erupted leading to several disciplinary problems including two red cards within eight days of each other (against Sporting Braga and Boavista FC).

Which effectively sidelined Alonso for six months following an alleged assault on Crespo's mother although no charges were ever brought forward despite video footage evidence emerging seemingly linking Alonso with involvement with assaulting her himself.

Causing the Spanish FA Disciplinary Commission eventually impose an 8-game suspension without pay starting from 16 September 2007 onwards meaning that all competitive matches missed.

Despite these off field troubles however, between October 2007 – February 2008 Miguel averaged almost 1 assist per league match as well as contributing 4 goals during that period while still maintaining high defensive duties.

Which led some pundits such as Zinedine Zidane & Setanta Sports pundit Iñaki Peña labeling him "the complete player.

Due largely downplayed elsewhere across Europe especially towards teams defensively minded like Real Madrid or Barcelona so much so they could afford sell one player instead? In fact it has even been claimed.
