2009 Chicago Bears Season Best Players of All Time

The 2009 Chicago Bears season was an exciting one as they sought to make a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. After a 9-7 record in 2008, the team was determined to make a statement in their 90th season in the National Football League.

Unfortunately, the Bears were unable to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season, finishing 7-9. Despite the disappointing outcome, the 2009 Bears season was filled with thrilling moments as the team fought to make a run for the post season.

1. Lance Briggs

Linebacker

Lance Briggs is a linebacker for the Chicago Bears. He was drafted in 2003 and has been with the team ever since. Lance Briggs has won several awards, including two Super Bowl rings with the Chicago Bears.

He was named to the NFL All-Decade Team of the 2000s and 2010s respectively. Lance Briggs is married and has 2 children. Lance Briggs was a dominant defensive lineman during his time in the NFL, amassing over 1,000 tackles and 15 sacks.

He played seven seasons with the Bears before joining the Detroit Lions in 2011. Briggs has been named to two All-Pro teams and made 100 appearances for Chicago during his career. 

The 2001 graduate of Louisiana State University is now an analyst for Fox Sports Midwest and ESPN Deportes broadcasts covering Bears games.

2. Patrick Mannelly

Mannelly was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1998 and played for them until 2013. Mannelly played long snapper for the Bears, as well as punter and placekicker for a few years before becoming a full-time player.

He won two Super Bowls with Chicago (Super Bowl XLI, Super Bowl XLII) and was an All-Pro selection twice (2007, 2008). 

After leaving Chicago, Mannelly spent time with the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks before retiring in 2015 at age 38.

In his retirement press conference he said that he had suffered from chronic pain throughout his career but refused to retire because of it; instead seeking treatment from specialists each offseason so he could continue playing football. 

Mannelly is now working as a color commentator on Fox Sports 1's NFL coverage where he provides analysis of games along with other former players such as Kurt Warner and Julius Peppers.

Patrick Mannelly is a former American football fullback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for fifteen seasons. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft and played his entire career with them, retiring after Super Bowl XLI. 

Mannelly was known as a powerful running back and receiver out of college, earning All-America honors from both The Sporting News and College Sports Journal.

He also earned First Team All-Pro recognition from the Associated Press in 2000 and Second Team accolades from The NFL Players Association that same year. 

After spending his rookie season on injured reserve, Mannelly made an immediate impact with Chicago during their run to Super Bowl XXXVIII, catching eight passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns en route to MVP honors. 

Injuries plagued Mannelly over the next few years; he missed most of 2002 due to injury but rebounded strong enough to be named Comeback Player of Year by ESPN following 2003's 11-5 campaign where he led all backs with 863 rushing yards on 137 carries (5 average).

ACL early in training camp which ended his season prematurely; however, 2005 proved much more fruitful as he averaged 5 yards per carry while amassing 1,337 combined net rushing/receiving yards.

Sixth-best overall in NFL history at that point – including nine receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown against.  Green Bay Packers in NFC Championship Game which gave Bears their first-ever appearance in Super Bowl XLII.

3. Charles Tillman

Charles Tillman started his NFL career with the Chicago Bears in 2003. Tillman was a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the best cornerbacks in the league for most of his time in Chicago.

In 2015, he signed with the Carolina Panthers and has continued to be a highly-effective player for them ever since. Charles Tillman is a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and an all-around superb player.

He has amassed over 800 tackles in his career, forcing 41 fumbles, recovering 9, and intercepting 38 balls. Charles Tillman is also one of the Bears' most popular players, with legions of fans rooting for him every game.

4. Olin Kreutz

Kreutz was an All-Pro center for the Chicago Bears from 1998 to 2010. Kreutz also played for the New Orleans Saints in 2011. Kreutz is a two-time Pro Bowler and was selected to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 2000s.

Olin Kreetz is known for his powerful blocking ability, which helped lead his teams to many victories over time Kreutz started his career with the Bears in 2001 and has been a mainstay of the team since. 

He was voted to both the Pro Bowl and NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and is considered one of the best centers in the league.

Kreutz also earned First-team All-Pac-10 honors during his time at Oregon State, making him one of only two players ever from that school to do so. 

In addition to being an all around solid player, Kreutz is known for his strong leadership skills on and off the field - which have helped guide Chicago through some difficult times recently.

5. Adewale Ogunleye

Adewale Ogunleye is a defensive end who played for the Miami Dolphins (2000-2003) and Chicago Bears (2004-2009). Ogunleye was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2004 NFL Draft but did not sign with them.

He later signed with the Miami Dolphins, where he spent the final three seasons of his career. Ogunleye has made an impact on both professional football and college football levels.

He was a first-team All-American at Indiana University in 1997 and 1998 before being drafted into the NFL by Chicago Bears in 2000.

After spending time with both teams, Ogunleye retired from playing in 2009 to focus on coaching full-time at his alma mater of Indiana University Bloomington High School as their Defensive Line Coach starting the 2010 season until January 2019 when he accepted a full professorship at Louisiana State University.

Adewale Ogunleye played football at Indiana University and was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2003.

He has three All-Pro selections, 67 sacks, 14 fumble recoveries, and one interception in his career. Ogunleye is a member of the Indianapolis Colts hall of fame and was named first-team All-Pro in 2003.

Adams was a highly-touted defensive end prospect out of Fork Union Military Academy. Adams played at Clemson from 2002 to 2006 and was named first-team All-ACC twice and second team once.

Adams was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2007 NFL Draft, but only appeared in four games over two seasons before being released in 2009. Adams died on January 17, 2010 after suffering a heart attack while playing basketball with friends in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Adams was a consensus All-American in 2006 and 2007. He led the ACC with 13 sacks in 2006, helping lead North Carolina to an ACC Championship. Adams also won Defensive Player of the Year honors that year from the ACC, as well as First Team All-ACC recognition from both leagues' media outlets.

The Chicago Bears drafted him in the first round (17th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft and he has started all 16 games for them since then. 

Adams ranks second on the team with 93 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 4 forced fumbles while spending most of his time at free safety but saw some time at linebacker during their run to Super Bowl XLVIII this year where they lost 31-24 to Seattle Seahawks.

7. Henry Melton

Henry Melton was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2009 and played for them until 2013. He is best known for his time with the Bears where he earned three Pro Bowl nominations and one All-Pro selection.

In 2013, Melton signed a five-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers and has since retired from football. 

Outside of football, Melton is also an entrepreneur and owns two businesses - a barbershop called "Henry's Barbers" in Desoto, Texas and a dietary supplement company called "The Bulking Stack".

Henry Melton currently resides in Austin, Texas with his wife Victoria and their son Hunter Henry Melton, who played for the Dallas Cowboys (2014-2016) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2015),

 had a successful four-year career in the NFL. He was selected to both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams during his time with Dallas, while he also earned first team All NFC honors with Tampa Bay in 2015.

The versatile defensive lineman is well known for his strength at getting into opposing backfield, as well as his ability to disrupt offensive plays. 

In 2017, after being released by Dallas following the season opener, Melton signed with Denver on a one year deal but did not appear in any games before being waived again late in preseason action this year.

8. Kevin Jones

Kevin Jones had a successful career with the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. He was drafted by the Lions in the 2004 NFL Draft and played for them from 2004-2007.

He then signed with the Bears in 2008 and played for them until 2009. Jones had a very successful career with Detroit, recording over 1000 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

He also had a good career with the Bears, recording over 1000 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns. Jones announced his retirement from the NFL in 2009. He now works as a football analyst for ESPN.

Kevin Jones is a very successful running back and has had a successful career in the NFL. Kevin Jones was a consensus first-team All-American as a junior in 2003 and was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He spent four seasons with the Steelers before signing with the Baltimore Ravens in 2007. Jones was traded to the New York Giants in 2010 and played his final season with the team in 2011. Jones was a two-time All-Pro and was a two-time Pro Bowler.

He retired after the 2011 season and is currently an assistant coach with the Ravens.

Brown played for the Chicago Bears from 2002 to 2009. He was a starter for the Bears for six years, and was a part of two NFC Championship teams. Brown was drafted by the Saints in 2010, but only played one season with them.

He has since retired from football, and is now a firefighter in Florida. Brown is a strong defensive end who can rush the passer. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and was a member of the Bears' 2000 Super Bowl team. Brown is a dedicated firefighter who has been with the department for over 10 years.

Brown is a father of two young children. Brown is a popular figure in the community, and he is involved in many charitable activities. He was a two-time first-team All-American and three-time first-team All-SEC player at the University of Florida. 

He was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 and was drafted in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.

He played in 12 seasons in the NFL with the Ravens, New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals. He was a three-time Pro Bowler and was the Bengals' all-time leading tackler with 543 tackles. 

He announced his retirement from the NFL in January 2019. Brown was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.

Kellen Davis is a tight end for the Chicago Bears. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Davis has played for the Chicago Bears (2008-2012) and the Cleveland Browns (2013).

He has had success in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the Chicago Bears. Davis is a highly-touted tight end, and is known for his athleticism and ability to catch the ball. Davis is currently a free agent.

He has been described as a "lock-down" tight end, and is considered one of the best in the NFL. Davis is married and has two children. Davis is a Michigan State graduate. He was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

After spending his first three seasons with the Seahawks, Davis was traded to the New York Giants in 2014. During his time with the Giants, Davis had a breakout season, catching 59 passes for 811 yards and six touchdowns. The Giants went on to win the Super Bowl in 2014, and Davis was a key part of their success.

In 2015, Davis was traded to the Detroit Lions. Davis had a mixed season with the Lions, but he still caught 42 passes for 563 yards and four touchdowns. 

In 2016, Davis was traded to the New York Jets. Davis had a disappointing season with the Jets, managing just 18 catches for 220 yards and no touchdowns. Davis was released by the Jets at the end of the season.

Earl Bennett played for the Chicago Bears from 2008-2013. After leaving the Bears, Bennett played for the Cleveland Browns from 2014-2015. Bennett is currently the Director of Player Development for the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Bennett was a three-time All-American at Vanderbilt and won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker in 2006. Bennett is the son of former NFL player Earl Bennett Sr. Bennett was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on March 23, 1987.

Earl Bennett is a graduate of Birmingham (AL) West End High School. Bennett played college football at Vanderbilt, where he was a three-time All-American and won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker in 2006. Bennett was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Earl Bennett is one of the most successful wide receivers to ever play at Vanderbilt. He was a three-time All-SEC selection and was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Earl Bennett played for the Seahawks for six seasons before joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013.

He then spent two seasons with the Chicago Bears before retiring in 2015. Earl Bennett is currently the director of player development for Vanderbilt. Earl Bennett is a two-time Walter Payton Man of the Year honoree. 

Earl Bennett is the son of former NFL player Earl Bennett. Earl Bennett is married to the former Tamika Catchings. Earl Bennett has two children, a daughter and a son. Earl Bennett is a member of the Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor. Earl Bennett is currently an analyst for the SEC Network.

Zack Bowman played cornerback for the Chicago Bears from 2008 to 2011. Bowman was a fifth round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Bowman started 38 games for the Bears and had 142 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble.

Bowman signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2012, but was released in September. Bowman has since retired from football. 

Zack Bowman was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played in all 16 games for the Bears in 2012 and 2013, recording 58 combined tackles and one interception.

Bowman signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent in 2014 and played in all 16 games for them that season, recording 53 combined tackles and one interception. 

Bowman was traded to the New York Giants in 2015 and played in all 16 games for them that season, recording 71 combined tackles, one interception, and one defensive touchdown.

Bowman was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2016 and played in all 16 games for them that season, recording 54 combined tackles and one interception. 

Bowman signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears in 2017 and played in all 16 games for them that season, recording 54 combined tackles. Bowman was released by the Chicago Bears in January 2018 and signed with the Arizona Cardinals later that month.

Bowman was released by the Arizona Cardinals in February 2018 and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles the following week. Bowman was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2018 and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following week.

13. Craig Steltz

Craig Steltz was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2008 NFL Draft. He played for the Bears from 2008 to 2014. Steltz had a successful career with the Bears, recording 229 total tackles, two interceptions, and one sack.

In 2014, Steltz signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played for the Buccaneers until 2016, when he was released. Steltz then signed with the New Orleans Saints, but was released in September of that year. He has since retired from football.

14. Marcus Harrison

Marcus Harrison played defensive tackle for the Chicago Bears from 2008-2012. Harrison was drafted by the Bears in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Harrison has also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions. Harrison was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team in 2008. Harrison is a two-time Pro Bowler.

Harrison is currently a free agent. Harrison was born in Arkansas, but has spent most of his career playing in the NFC North. Harrison is a married father of two.

Harrison is a highly respected player in the NFL and is widely considered to be one of the best defensive tackles in the league. Marcus Harrison was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Marcus Harrison played for the Bears from 2008 to 2010. Harrison was a Second-team All-SEC player in 2007. Harrison was signed by the New England Patriots in the 2011 NFL season. Harrison played for the Patriots from 2011 to 2014.

Harrison was released by the Patriots in the 2014 NFL season. Harrison signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2015 NFL season. Harrison was released by the Eagles in the 2016 NFL season. Harrison signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2017 NFL season.

Chris Williams was selected 14th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. Williams played college football at Vanderbilt and was a two-time All-SEC selection.

He started all 16 games as a rookie and was a part of the Rams' Super Bowl XLIV team. Williams was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2013 and played in all 16 games that season.

He was released by the Seahawks in 2014 and signed with the Rams the following year. Williams is a two-time Pro Bowler and has been a part of two Super Bowl teams. He signed a three-year contract with the Rams in 2018.

Chris Williams was a top-tier player in the SEC and was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2008 NFL Draft. Williams started 57 games in his career and was a key player on the Bears' team that made the playoffs in both 2008 and 2009.

Williams was traded to the St. Louis Rams in 2012, where he played for two seasons before being traded to the Buffalo Bills in 2014. In his four seasons in the NFL, Williams recorded 72 tackles, one sack, and two interceptions. Williams is currently a free agent and is looking to continue his career in the NFL.

16. Tommie Harris

Harris was drafted 14th overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2004 NFL Draft. He played for the Bears for six seasons before joining the Indianapolis Colts in 2011.

Harris is best known for his time with the Chicago Bears, where he won a Super Bowl championship in 2008. He also played in the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2009. Harris has also played for the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers.

He has recorded over 100 tackles in each of his three seasons in the NFL. Harris is married and has two children. He is a devout Christian and has spoken about his faith in the past. Harris is considered a tough and physical tackle who can disrupt opposing offenses.

Anthony Adams was born on June 18, 1980 in Detroit, Michigan. Adams played college football at Penn State and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2003 NFL Draft.

Adams has played for the Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Atlanta Falcons in his NFL career. Adams has also played for the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles in his career.

Adams has been a key player for the Patriots and has been named to five Pro Bowls. Adams has also won two Super Bowls with the Patriots. Adams was released by the Falcons in 2017 and has since retired from the NFL.

Adams is a member of the Detroit Lions Hall of Fame. Adams is currently the head coach of the Detroit Lions' defensive line. Anthony Adams is a former NFL linebacker who played for the Chicago Bears from 2007 to 2011.

Hunter Hillenmeyer was drafted in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. Hillenmeyer started his NFL career with the Packers in 2003 and has since been a mainstay on the team's defense.

Hillenmeyer has played in 97 games over the course of his career and recorded 456 total tackles. Hillenmeyer is known for his physical play on the field and his ability to make tackles in the backfield. Hillenmeyer is set to enter his 10th season with the Packers in 2017.

Caleb Hanie is a former NFL quarterback who spent time with the Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos. Hanie was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2008 NFL Draft but did not see any playing time with the team.

Hanie signed with the Denver Broncos in 2011 and started 13 games for the team that year. Hanie was released by the Broncos in 2012 and has not played in the NFL since. Hanie is currently a quarterbacks coach for the Colorado State Rams.

Kevin Shaffer was born in Salisbury, Maryland in 1980. He attended Lancaster (PA) Conestoga Valley High School and played offensive tackle for the varsity football team.

Shaffer attended Tulsa and played offensive tackle for the football team from 1997 to 2001. Shaffer was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2002 NFL Draft and has played for the team since then.

Final Words

The 2009 Chicago Bears season was an exciting one as they sought to make a return to the playoffs. The Bears had a number of talented players on their roster, including quarterback Jay Cutler, running back Matt Forte, and receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.

However, the team was unable to make it past the divisional round, losing to the New Orleans Saints in a close matchup. The Bears were a talented team, but they lacked consistency, which was the reason they were unable to make it further.
