Erik Jones won the Busch Clash at Daytona, becoming the first black driver to win a premier NASCAR series race. The victory makes him only the second rookie in Nascar history to win multiple races in one season and also earns him $1 million dollars.
Jones’ team was able to capitalize on pole-sitter Austin Dillon’s early mistake and never looked back en route to their fourth consecutive victory this year. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished 2nd, lamented his lack of speed late in the race that could have cost him a chance at winning it all – but still headed into Homestead with plenty of momentum for next weekend’s Coca Cola 600 event .

NASCAR Cup Series Driver for Petty GMS Motorsports
Richard Petty has driven in the NASCAR Cup Series for over 50 years and remains one of the most iconic drivers in racing history. In 2018, he was joined by driver Aric Almirola as part of Petty GMS Motorsports.
The team is currently competing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with a number 43 car. They have made several appearances this season, but their best chance to win may come next week at Phoenix International Raceway.
If they can make it past that race, they will move on to compete at Las Vegas Motor Speedway later in the year where victory could be theirs once again.
Season Begins with Busch Clash Victory
Dale Earnhardt Jr. of Hendrick Motorsports won the Busch Clash race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night to start the NASCAR season off with a victory.
He led most of the way and overcame some tough challenges along the way to seal his spot in history as one of Nascar’s all-time greats. Kyle Busch from Joe Gibbs Racing was second, followed by Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick rounding out the top five finishers in what turned out to be a very close race.
This is only Round 1 though, so don’t get too comfortable. The real action begins next week when Monster Energy Cup drivers hit Las Vegas for Speedweeks racing… Car 43 comes into play (ha).
Selected to Drive the No. 43 in the Cup Series
Darrell Waltrip, a three-time Cup Champion and two-time Daytona 500 winner, will drive the No. 43 car in this season’s racing. The 43 stands for “mile high,” as it is located at Denver International Airport and was originally designed to be used by air traffic controllers during approach and departure procedures.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won an unprecedented five championships in the NASCAR cup series, drove the No. 3 car for many years before his death in 2001; now his son Brian drives that number on a regular basis Jeff Gordon has driven the No. 24 car since 1996, winning more than 200 races during that time period (including four consecutive titles from 2002-2005).
