The Virginia Cavaliers Men’s basketball team is one of the most successful programs in the history of college basketball. Established in 1905, the Cavaliers have had a long and illustrious history, winning five NCAA Division I National Championships, making nine Final Fours, and appearing in the NCAA Tournament thirty-five times.

The Cavaliers are a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the most competitive conference in college basketball, and are one of the most successful teams in the ACC, winning the regular season championship eleven times and the tournament championship eight times.

Led by head coach Tony Bennett, the Cavaliers have been consistently ranked in the top 25 in recent years and are perennial contenders for the NCAA Championship.

Joe Harris was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2014 NBA draft. He played for the Cavs until 2018, when he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. In 2019, Joe Harris led the Nets in scoring and made an All-Star team nomination.

Joe Harris was an All-ACC second-team selection in both 2013 and 2014. Joe Harris won the NBA Three-Point Contest in 2019, becoming the first player from Brooklyn to win a title. Joe Harris is averaging 12 points per game this season while shooting 43 percent from three point range.

Joe Harris played his college ball at Washington where he became Mr Basketball of 2010 before being drafted by Cleveland in 2014.

De'Andre Hunter is a versatile small forward who was drafted 4th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native attended Friends' Central School before going to play college basketball at Virginia for two years.

In his rookie season with the Lakers, De’Andre averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds per game while shooting 44% from the field and 31% from three-point range. 

He has continued to grow as a player during his second year in the league, averaging 12 points and 6 rebounds per game while shooting 48% from the field and 34% from three-point range.

De'Andre Hunter is a talented and versatile player who started his career at Virginia before being drafted in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. 

De'Andre Hunter has been an instrumental part of the Hawks' success this season, averaging 16.5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists per game while shooting 43% from 3-point range.

De'Andre Hunter will be looking to add to his impressive list of accolades when he takes on Maryland in the NCAA Tournament next week.

Scott was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 2009 NBA draft. Scott played college basketball at Virginia and helped lead them to a National Championship in 2011.

After graduation, Scott signed with Nancy Basket of LNB Pro A and has been one of their most consistent players over the past few seasons. In 2019, Scott led Nancy Basket to their first ever French League title, earning him MVP honors along the way.

Mike is known for his strong rebounding skills and defensive presence on both ends of the court; he is also an excellent shooter from outside-the-arc Scott was drafted 43rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2012 NBA draft. Scott played for both the Bakersfield Jam and Delaware 87ers before joining the Long Island Nets in 2016.

In 2017, he joined the Washington Wizards and continued to play with them until 2018 when he was traded to Los Angeles Clippers. After being traded again, Scott signed with SLUC Nancy Basket for a two-year deal in 2019.

Ralph Sampson was a dominant center in the NBA for many years. He was drafted first overall by the Houston Rockets, and he played for them until 1995. Ralph Sampson is considered one of the greatest players in league history, and his number 50 is still retired by the Rockets.

He has two championship rings with the Golden State Warriors, as well as several other awards and accolades on his resume. Ralph Sampson was an American basketball player who played for the Sacramento Kings, Washington Bullets, and Unicaja Ronda. 

He is most famous for his time spent with the Houston Rockets where he won two championships.

Sampson was a dominant force on the court throughout his career, averaging 21 points and 14 rebounds per game in his career. He also had success outside of basketball, earning a degree from James Madison University while playing professional basketball overseas in Spain and Italy. 

Sampson has been inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as well as the College Basketball Hall of Fame, cementing his place among some of history’s greatest players.

Jay Huff was originally from Durham, North Carolina and attended Voyager Academy. He played college basketball for Virginia before being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NBA G League Draft by the South Bay Lakers.

In his rookie season with South Bay, Jay averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game. Jay is expected to be a key player for the Lakers this upcoming season as they look to make an impact in the league. Jay Huff was undrafted in the 2021 NBA draft, but he has since had a successful career playing for various teams in the league.

Jay Huff is a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year and NCAA champion with South Bay Lakers. Jay Huff is known as one of the best perimeter defenders in college basketball history, and his ability to shut down opponents will be crucial on Saturday night when he takes on Lonzo Ball and UCLA.

Mamadi Diakite was born on January 21, 1997 in Conakry, Guinea. Mamadi Diakite played college basketball for Virginia from 2016-2020 and is currently a power forward with the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA.

Mamadi Diakite has had a successful career so far and is definitely one to watch out for in the future. Diakite is a versatile forward who has been playing in the NBA G League since 2017. In his rookie season with the Lakeland Magic, Diakite averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds per game.

He was named to the NBA G League All-Rookie Team after averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds for Cleveland Charge during their inaugural season in 2020-21. Diakite finished second on Cleveland's all-time scoring list behind LeBron James with 3,421 points scored in 755 games played from 2013 to 2019.

The 27 year old Senegal international had an impressive NCAA championship campaign with Louisville where he averaged 26 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists per game en route to winning college basketball's most prestigious title.

Kyle Guy was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and attended high school at Lawrence Central. In his two years at Virginia, Guy played shooting guard for the Cavaliers' varsity squad.

He was drafted by the New York Knicks in 2019 as a second-round pick and has since made his debut with the team. Kyle Guy is known for being an excellent shooter with range out to 3-point territory and can also create shots off of dribbles or passes from teammates.

His long hair often gets him labelled as a "bad boy" on social media but he's actually quite shy away from cameras - preferring to stay behind the scenes most of the time. Kyle Guy is a talented shooting guard who attended Indiana University. 

Kyle has won numerous accolades throughout his career, including being an NCAA champion and Final Four MVP. He was drafted in the second round by the Sacramento Kings in 2019 and has since played for the Stockton Kings and Cleveland Charge before joining Joventut Badalona this season. 

Kyle is one of the most promising up-and-coming guards in basketball and will be looking to continue his success with Joventut Badalona next year.

Mike Tobey was born in Monroe, New York on October 10th, 1994. He attended Blair Academy and played college basketball for Virginia from 2012-2016. Mike was not drafted by an NBA team in the 2016 draft but he signed with FC Barcelona of the Liga ACB league shortly thereafter.

So far in his career with Barcelona, Tobey has averaged 8 points per game and 4 rebounds per game while shooting 47% from the field and 33% from three point range over 18 games played this season (as of January 2nd). 

Mike is a versatile player who can play both inside and outside positions and has been praised for his defense abilities by coaches at FC Barcelona as well as opponents he's faced during his short professional career so far Tobey was a standout player at North Carolina State and helped lead the Wolfpack to an NCAA Tournament appearance in his final season.

Tobey was drafted by Charlotte Hornets in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft, and made an immediate impact with his scoring ability off the bench. 

Tobey has since blossomed into one of the best players for FC Barcelona, helping them win multiple trophies including two EuroCups and a national championship in Spain.

9. Anthony Gill

Tony Gill was selected with the 16th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by Washington. Gill played college basketball at South Carolina where he averaged 14.5 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block per game over his two seasons there.

In 2016–17 season, Tony Gill led the Wizards in scoring (16.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.9 rpg). 

The Wizards re-signed Tony Gill to a 2 year $10 million contract extension on July 6, 2017 Tony Gill has appeared in 563 games for Washington averaging 13ppg, 8rpg and 1apg Gill was undrafted but signed with the Washington Wizards in 2016.

Gill played for Yeşilgiresun and Khimki before signing with the Washington Wizards. In 2017, Gill made his NBA debut playing for Yeşilgiresun and then joined the Washington Wizards in 2018. 

Gill has averaged 3 points per game over his career thus far and is currently a member of the Washington Wizards.

Taine Murray is a shooting guard for the Virginia Cavaliers in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Taine was born on April 19, 2002 in Hong Kong and is of New Zealand descent. At 6'5" and 207 pounds, Murray has size that many guards covet and he uses it to impact games offensively. 

As a freshman at Rosmini College, Taine averaged 16 points per game while also grabbing 4 rebounds per contest en route to being named First Team All-NZAC honoree as well as MVP of the NZ Secondary Schools National Championship Tournament (held annually in Wellington).

A highly touted recruit out of high school, Murray chose UVa over other ACC schools such as Clemson and North Carolina State due to its strong coaching staff and elite basketball program which includes former NBA player Brad Daugherty among others. 

With only two seasons under his belt with the Cavaliers - including an ACL tear suffered during his sophomore year - expectations are high for Taine's continued development both on court and off it moving forward.

11. Trey Murphy III

Trey Murphy III is a 22-year-old small forward/power forward who was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. Murphy attended Cary Academy in Cary, North Carolina, where he played basketball and football.

In his senior year at Cary, Murphy averaged 20.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. 

Murphy was considered a three-star recruit by 247Sports and was ranked as the No. 41 small forward in the country. Murphy made his NBA debut with the Pelicans in 2018 and averaged 5.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.

Murphy is a member of the United States U-19 national basketball team, which competed in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Spain in August 2018. Murphy is a native of Durham, North Carolina. 

Trey Murphy III was selected 17th overall in the 2021 NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. Murphy has played for the New Orleans Pelicans since 2021. Murphy has recorded averages of 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in his NBA career.

Murphy is a three-time All-Star and was named to the 2018-19 All-Defensive Second Team. Murphy is the son of former NBA player Trey Murphy. Murphy is a graduate of Rice University.

Wally Walker was born in 1954 in Millersville, Pennsylvania. Walker attended high school at Penn Manor in Millersville, Pennsylvania. Walker played college basketball at Virginia from 1972 to 1976.

Walker was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1976 NBA draft and played with the team from 1976 to 1985. Walker is best known for his playing career with the Trail Blazers. Walker was inducted into the Philadelphia 76ers Hall of Fame in 2006.

Walker currently resides in the Philadelphia area. Walker has two children. Walker is retired from playing professional basketball. Walker was a two-time NBA champion and ACC Tournament MVP with the Seattle SuperSonics. 

He was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1976 NBA draft and spent his first four seasons with the team.

In 1982, he was traded to the Houston Rockets where he spent the next four seasons. In 1984, he was traded to the Italian League team, Simac Milano. Walker retired from professional basketball in 1985. 

He currently works as an assistant coach for the Virginia Cavaliers. Walker was inducted into the Virginia Cavaliers Hall of Fame in 2009. He has two sons, one of which is also a professional basketball player. Wally Walker is currently a commentator for NBA TV.

Olden Polynice was born in Haiti in 1964 and has played in the NBA for over 20 years. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1987 and spent his entire career with the team.

Olden Polynice is known for his defense and is a two-time All-Star. He retired from the NBA in 2006. Olden Polynice currently works as a commentator for Haitian television channels.

He has two children and lives in Miami, Florida. Olden Polynice is a highly respected basketball player and commentator in Haiti. Olden Polynice was a highly decorated college basketball player who went on to have a successful NBA career.

He was a two-time All-ACC selection and led his team to the ACC Tournament Championship in his senior season. Polynice was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft. He played for the Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, and Seattle SuperSonics before joining the Utah Jazz in 1999.

Polynice was traded to the Las Vegas Slam in 2001 and then to the Gary Steelheads in 2003. He retired in 2006 after spending time with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Michigan Mayhem.

Polynice was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. He currently works as a commentator for the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.

14. Kihei Clark

Kihei Clark is a promising point guard in the ACC. Clark was a highly touted recruit out of high school, and has quickly made a name for himself in the ACC.

Clark is a very fast player with good ball-handling skills. Clark is a good defender, and has shown the ability to create his own shot. Clark is still developing as a player, and has a lot of potential.

Clark is a student of the game, and is constantly learning new things. Clark has a bright future, and is expected to play a large role in the ACC in the future. Clark is a great role model for young players, and has helped to set an example for them.

Clark is an excellent player, and will be a key part of the Virginia Cavaliers for years to come. Kihei Clark was born in Sherman Oaks, California in October of 1998. Kihei attended Buckley School for high school and then transferred to William Howard Taft College where he played for the Cavaliers.

In his freshman year at William Howard Taft, Clark was named the ACC Rookie of the Year and was also a first-team All-ACC selection. In his sophomore year, Clark was again named the ACC Rookie of the Year and was also a second-team All-ACC selection. 

 In his junior year, Clark was named the ACC Player of the Year and was also a first-team All-American selection. Clark was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 2019 MLB draft. 

 Clark has played in one MLB game so far, and he has posted a 0-for-3 batting average. Kihei is currently a senior at William Howard Taft and is planning on majoring in business.

15. Reece Beekman

Reece Beekman is a 21-year-old point guard for the Virginia Cavaliers. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and played high school basketball for Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia.

Beekman led the Virginia Cavaliers to the ACC regular season and tournament championships in 2018-19. He averaged 17.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. Beekman was named First Team All-ACC and ACC Player of the Year in 2019.

He is a three-time First Team All-ACC selection, and was a finalist for the Naismith Trophy in 2019. Beekman is a member of the United States national team. He played in the 2019 FIBA World Cup, where the United States finished in fourth place.

Lamp was a prolific scorer in the NBA, averaging 17.5 points per game over his career. He was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1981 NBA Draft, and played for them for six seasons.

Lamp also played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Washington Bullets. Lamp is most well-known for his time with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he won a championship in 1984. Lamp retired from the NBA in 1993.

Bryant Stith played professional basketball for sixteen seasons, most notably with the Denver Nuggets. He spent time with several other teams, but is most notably remembered for his time with the Nuggets.

He was a key player on the Nuggets' 2000–01 NBA championship team. He retired in 2002, having played in 709 games. He currently coaches at UNC Greensboro. Bryant Stith is a successful coach who has worked with several high schools in North Carolina.

He started his coaching career at Brunswick HS in 2003, where he led the team to a state championship in 2009. In 2013, he moved to UNC Greensboro to be an assistant coach. He has also served as an assistant coach with the United States men's national basketball team.

In 2018, he was named the ACC Coach of the Year. He is currently in his third stint with the United States men's national basketball team, and is considered one of the best coaches in the country.

His achievements have earned him a spot on the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Barry Parkhill was born on May 10, 1951 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended high school in State College, Pennsylvania and played college basketball for Virginia.

He was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1973 NBA draft and played for them for three seasons. He then played for the Washington Bullets and the Golden State Warriors before coaching in the NBA for over 20 years.

He was the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks and Minnesota Timberwolves. 

He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He retired in 2012. Barry Parkhill was an All-American basketball player at William and Mary.

He then coached at William and Mary for two seasons, before joining Navy as an assistant coach. Parkhill was then hired as the head coach at Saint Michael's, where he led the team to two NCAA tournaments. 

He then became the head coach at Virginia, where he led the Cavaliers to the ACC regular season and tournament championships. Parkhill retired from coaching following the 1993 season, having won over 200 games in his career.

Cory Alexander was a standout high school player, averaging over 20 points per game. He played college basketball for the Virginia Cavaliers, and was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1995 NBA draft.

He played in the NBA for six seasons, starting for parts of four of them. Alexander is best known for his time with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he was an All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection. He retired after the 2005 season, having played a total of 18 seasons in the NBA.

Alexander is now a commentator for the NBA on TNT, and also coaches the Flint Hill Generals high school basketball team. 

In 2017, he was named the head coach of the United States national men's basketball team. Alexander is married and has two children. Alexander was a two-time All-ACC selection and McDonald's All-American.

Gus Gerard was a small forward who played in the NBA for 10 seasons. He was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1975 and played for them until 1981.

He was a member of the Spirits of St. Louis in 1974-75 and the Denver Nuggets in 1976-77. He later played for the Buffalo Braves in 1977-78 and the Philadelphia 76ers in 1978-79.

He was a member of the United States national team from 1975 to 1981. He retired from the NBA in 1981 and later played for the Charlotte Hornets in the Continental Basketball Association.

He currently works as a basketball coach. He was born on July 27, 1953 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Gus Gerard passed away on May 21, 2018 at the age of 69. Gerard played for the Detroit Pistons in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

He was a powerful player who averaged over eight points and four rebounds per game. He was a two-time ABA All-Star and was a part of the San Antonio Spurs' championship-winning team in 1981. After his playing career ended, Gerard became a coach and led the Kings to the playoffs in his first season.

He has also worked as an assistant coach with the Spurs, Pistons, and Mavericks. In 2015, Gerard was inducted into the United States Basketball Hall of Fame.

Roger Mason Jr. was born on September 10, 1980, in Washington, D.C. He attended Sidwell Friends School and Good Counsel before going to college at Virginia.

Mason was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 2002 NBA draft and played for them for six seasons. In 2013, he signed with the Charlotte Hornets and played for them for three seasons.

Curtis Staples was born on July 14, 1976, in Roanoke, Virginia. He attended Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, where he played basketball and football.

Staples played college basketball at Virginia from 1994 to 1998. After completing his college career, Staples was not drafted by an NBA team. He instead played in the 2002–2003 season with the Huntsville Flight and the 2003–2004 season with the Roanoke Dazzle.

In 2007, Staples signed with the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League. He was released by the BayHawks in February 2008. Staples has since played in the NBA for the Orlando Magic, the Washington Wizards, and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Courtney Alexander was an assistant coach with the College Park Skyhawks. Alexander played college basketball at Virginia, where she was a key player on the team that reached the 1997 Elite Eight.

After college, Alexander played professional basketball in the NBA for the Orlando Magic. Alexander has since gone on to have a successful coaching career, most recently with the College Park Skyhawks.

Jones is in his 12th season as head coach at Old Dominion, where he has led the team to a 192–121 record over that time. As a player at Virginia, Jones was a point guard and helped the team to a Final Four appearance in 1982.

After coaching at Virginia for two seasons, Jones was hired as the head coach of the Tulsa Shock of the Women's National Basketball Association in 1998. He held that position for six seasons before joining Old Dominion in 2002.

Jones is a two-time NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, winning the award in 2002 at Tulsa and again in 2013 at Old Dominion. Jones has also been named Sun Belt Coach of the Year twice, in 2013 and 2015. Jones and his wife have three children.

Jeff Jones has a record of 549-408 (.574) while coaching at Old Dominion. The coach has led the Monarchs to three conference championships, as well as back-to-back appearances in the NIT. Jones has also won two Patriot League titles, as well as a C-USA regular season and tournament title.

In 2019, Jones was named Conference USA Coach of the Year.

Final Words

The Virginia Cavaliers Men’s basketball team is one of the most successful programs in the history of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. The Cavaliers have won 38 championships, the most of any Division I men’s basketball program.
