Club career

David de Gea, a Spanish professional goalkeeper, was born in Madrid and raised in Illescas. At the age of 13, he joined Atlético Madrid after being lied to by his coach Juan Luis Martín that Rayo Vallecano was interested in him.

He steadily rose through the youth ranks, and after signing his first professional contract in 2008, he was signed until 2011. In his second season, he played for Atlético Madrid B in Segunda División B.

During the summer of 2009, De Gea was approached by Numancia and Queens Park Rangers for a loan move, but he rejected it, leading to him being forced to train alone. However, Abel Resino, Atlético manager, noticed him training alone and invited him to train with the first team, where he was rated as third-choice goalkeeper.

In that same summer, an offer from Wigan Athletic was rejected by Atlético for a permanent transfer for De Gea. Despite this, De Gea became Atlético Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper and played regularly in the 2009–2010 season.

De Gea played a significant role in Atlético’s winning the UEFA Europa League in the following season, and his performance attracted interest from many European clubs. With a total of 88 appearances for the team, De Gea left Atlético Madrid to join Manchester United in 2011.

International career

David de Gea began his international career by assisting Spain’s under-17 team in winning the 2007 European Championship and securing the runners-up position in the 2007 World Cup. In May 2010, he was named in the preliminary 30-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup owing to his solid performances in Atlético Madrid.

Though there is no mention of his subsequent international appearances in the info section, he has been one of the most successful Spanish goalkeepers of recent times. He was part of the Spanish squad that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship, both as a backup goalkeeper.
