St Bonaventure Bonnies men’s basketball is one of the most storied programs in college basketball. Founded in 1870, they have been a mainstay in the NCAA and A-10 conferences for over a century.

The Bonnies have achieved a great deal of success throughout their history, making multiple NCAA tournament appearances, winning conference championships, and producing some of the greatest players in the game.

With a strong tradition of excellence and a passionate fan base, St Bonaventure Bonnies men’s basketball is a team to watch for both college basketball fans and basketball enthusiasts alike.

1. Bob Lanier

Lanier was born in Buffalo, New York on September 10th, 1948. He attended Bennett High School and played college basketball at St. Bonaventure before being drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the first overall pick in the 1970 NBA Draft.

Lanier would go on to play 16 seasons in the NBA for various teams including the Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns. 

He is considered one of best centers of his era and is still held in high regard by many fans today; he retired from playing professional basketball in 1984 but continued to work as a commentator for TNT until his death two years later at 73 years old.

Lanier is one of the most decorated coaches in NBA history. He has been a part of 8 All-Star games, was an All-Rookie First Team selection and was consensus first team all American his senior season at St Bonaventure. 

Lanier led the Pistons to their only championship during the 1980s and also served as interim coach for Golden State Warriors in 1994. Lanier currently works as an analyst for ESPN and Fox Sports 1 where he provides commentary on both basketball and other sports events.

Schmidt is in his fourth season as head coach at St. Bonaventure, and has led the Bonnies to a 276–203 record over that time. Schmidt played college basketball at Boston College from 1981-1985, where he was named an all-American guard in 1985.

After finishing his playing career, Schmidt served as an assistant coach for Saint Michael's (1989-1991) and Penn State (1993-1994). In 1994, Schmidt took the reins of Loyola (MD), serving there until he was hired by Stony Brook in 2003. 

At Stony Brook, Schmidt posted a 64–25 mark before being promoted to head coach at Stony Brook's Division II rival Manhattan in 2007; he stayed with them through 2014 before joining the Bonnies staff this past year.

Schmidt is in his third season as the head coach of St. Bonaventure, and he's led the Bonnies to a 38-25 record so far. Schmidt has helped lead the Bonnies to two Atlantic 10 conference championships (2016, 2021). 

Schmidt was an assistant coach at Xavier from 1994 to 2001 and then Robert Morris from 2001 to 2007. Schmidt was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017.

Adams played college ball at St. Bonaventure before being drafted in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Adams has appeared in 25 games for the Hawks this season, averaging 5.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists.

Adams is a point guard who is known for his passing ability and shooting accuracy. Adams is a native of Hanover, Maryland and is currently in his third season in the NBA. Adams was a high-quality prospect out of high school, and he showed off his skills in his first year of college.

Adams made an immediate impact with the Erie BayHawks, and he helped lead the team to the NBL championship. Adams is a versatile player who can do a lot of things on the court. 

He is a strong scorer and passer. Adams is expected to be a starter with the Milwaukee Bucks next season. He should have a lot of success in the NBA.

Nicholson was a first-round pick of the Orlando Magic in the 2012 NBA Draft. Nicholson has played for the Orlando Magic since 2012. Nicholson is a power forward and has averaged 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in his career.

Nicholson is a Canadian player and was born in Mississauga, Ontario. Nicholson is a fan favorite with the Orlando Magic and is known for his hustle and physical play. Nicholson is set to become a free agent in the summer of 2019, and there are rumors that he could join the Philadelphia 76ers.

Nicholson is a three-time All-Star and has been a part of the Canadian National Team. Nicholson is a role model and has spoken about his struggles with addiction and his journey to recovery. 

Nicholson is married and has two children. Nicholson was a two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and All-American at St.

Bonaventure. Nicholson was drafted 38th overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2012 NBA draft. Nicholson has had a successful career in the NBA, averaging 7.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. 

Nicholson played for the Brooklyn Nets, Guangdong Southern Tigers, and Fujian Sturgeons in the Chinese Basketball Association before joining the Bay Area Dragons in the 2019–20 season.

Nicholson is a two-time All-Star and has won a championship with the Golden State Warriors in the 2017–18 season. Nicholson is a ambassador for the St. Bonaventure Bonnies and is currently a student at the university.

Essie Hollis was a two-time All-Star and member of the Utah Jazz championship team in 1984. Hollis was drafted 44th overall by the New Orleans Jazz in the 1977 NBA draft.

Hollis played for the Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, and Golden State Warriors in his 14-year NBA career. Hollis was inducted into the St. Bonaventure University Hall of Fame in 2006.

Hollis currently works as a color commentator for the NBA on TNT. Essie Hollis was born in Erie, Pennsylvania and raised in Strong Vincent, a small town in Erie County, Pennsylvania.

Hollis attended St. Bonaventure University where he played for the Bonnies from 1973 to 1977. Hollis was a two-time All-Star and member of the Utah Jazz championship team in 1984. Hollis was inducted into the St.

Bonaventure University Hall of Fame in 2006. Hollis currently works as a color commentator for the NBA on TNT.

Bremer was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 2002 NBA draft but never played in the league. He played in Spain for Unicaja Málaga from 2003 to 2004. Bremer then played for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2004 to 2005.

He then played for the Golden State Warriors from 2004 to 2005. Bremer then played for the Unicaja Málaga from 2005 to 2007. Bremer then signed with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2007 but was waived in 2008. Bremer then signed with the Seattle SuperSonics but was waived in 2009.

Bremer then signed with the Atlanta Hawks but was waived in 2010. Bremer then signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder but was waived in 2011. J. R. Bremer was born on October 12, 1966 in Stuttgart, Germany. Bremer began his coaching career with the Lauretana Biella in the 2005-06 season.

In 2007, he took over as head coach of PAOK Thessaloniki. In 2007-08, Bremer led Spartak Primorje to the Bulgarian A PFG title. 

In 2008-09, he took over as head coach of Triumph Lyubertsy in Russia. In 2009-10, he led Krasnye Krylya Samara to the Russian Cup title. In 2011-12, he took over as head coach of Nizhny Novgorod.

In 2012, he led Olimpia Milano to the Serie A title. In 2012, he led Fenerbahçe Ülker to the Turkish Cup title.

7. Tom Stith

Tom Stith was a prolific scorer in the NBA, ranking in the top 10 in points scored eight times. He was the first player in NBA history to average more than 20 points and 10 rebounds in a season.

He was also a member of the gold-medal-winning United States Men’s Olympic Basketball team in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Tom Stith was born in Greenville, Virginia, in 1939 and attended St. Bonaventure University.

He was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1961 NBA draft and played for the team from 1962 to 1966. He was a part of the Knicks’ 1963 and 1965 championship teams. Tom Stith was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992.

He died in 2010 at the age of 71 after a long illness. Tom Stith was a two-time consensus first-team All-American and a two-time Parade All-American. 

Stith was drafted by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 1962 NBA draft. He played for the Wilkes-Barre Barons and Allentown Jets in the NBA.

Stith was inducted into the St. Bonaventure Bonnies Hall of Fame in 1995. He is currently the head coach of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. Stith has a career coaching record of 134–128. Stith was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 10, 1942. He died on December 20, 2016.

Freddie Crawford was an NBA shooting guard who played for the New York Knicks from 1967 to 1971. Crawford was drafted by the Knicks in the fourth round in 1964, and he played for the team until 1971.

He was known for his shooting skills, and he averaged 13.8 points per game over his career. Crawford later played for the Chicago Bulls and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and he retired in 1988. Freddie Crawford has since enjoyed a successful career as a basketball coach.

He has led teams to several championships. Crawford was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Freddie Crawford was born on August 5, 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played college basketball at Temple University where he was a two-time All-American.

Crawford was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the fourth round of the 1974 NBA Draft. Crawford played in the NBA for thirteen seasons, winning two championships with the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1980-81 and 1982-83 seasons.

Crawford also played for the Buffalo Braves, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Boston Celtics.

Crawford finished his NBA career with 2,031 points, 746 rebounds, and 610 assists. Freddie Crawford is a six-time All-Star, and he was inducted into the Philadelphia 76ers Hall of Fame in 2003. 

Crawford is currently the head coach at St. Bonaventure Bonnies. Crawford has authored two books, "How to Play Like a Pro" and "The Freddie Crawford Story".

Kyle Lofton is a talented point guard for the Florida Gators. Kyle Lofton was a standout high school player, averaging over 20 points and five assists per game as a senior at Union Catholic.

Kyle Lofton declared for the 2017 NBA Draft, but decided to return to Florida for his sophomore season. In his sophomore season, Kyle Lofton led Florida to a 27-8 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

In his junior season, Kyle Lofton led Florida to a 27-9 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Kyle Lofton declared for the 2019 NBA Draft, and was selected 11th overall by the Florida Gators.

David Vanterpool played in the NBA for six seasons, from 1996 to 2007. Vanterpool is best known for his time with the Atlanta Hawks, where he averaged 7.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

Vanterpool also played for the Memphis Grizzlies and the New Orleans Hornets. Vanterpool is currently a coach in the NBA. Vanterpool was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1973. Vanterpool graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1991.

Vanterpool played college basketball at St. Bonaventure, where he averaged 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. 

Vanterpool was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1995 NBA draft, but he did not play in the league. Vanterpool began his coaching career with the Austin Toros of the NBA D-League in 2007.

David Vanterpool played professional basketball in Russia and Italy before coaching in the NBA. Vanterpool has been an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Brooklyn Nets. 

Vanterpool has most recently been the associate head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. Vanterpool has won multiple championships with CSKA Moscow, and he was also a EuroLeague champion.

Vanterpool has also been an Italian League champion and MVP, and he has been a part of the Italian national team. David Vanterpool is a well-known basketball coach, and he is currently an associate head coach with the Brooklyn Nets.

11. Mark Jones

Bonaventure. Jones was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1983 NBA draft and played for the team for six seasons. Jones was a versatile player who was able to play both forward positions.

Jones retired from professional basketball in 1996 and now works as a basketball coach. Jones is a two-time All-Star and was inducted into the St. Bonaventure University Hall of Fame in 2003.

Jones is a dedicated family man who has two children. Jones is a basketball coach who works with younger players in his hometown of Rochester, New York. Jones was originally drafted by the New Jersey Nets in the 1983 NBA draft.

He played for the Albany Patroons from 1983 to 1984 before joining the Milwaukee Bucks in 1985. Jones was a three-time CBA champion with the Milwaukee Bucks (1985, 1986, 1987). Jones played in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1985 to 1988 and the Atlanta Hawks from 1989 to 1990.

Jones later played for the Detroit Pistons and the Orlando Magic. Jones retired from playing in 1992. Jones was inducted into the Milwaukee Bucks Hall of Fame in 2006. 

Jones currently works as a basketball commentator for Fox Sports Wisconsin. Jones was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

12. Marquise Simmons

Marquise Simmons played college basketball at Central Washington University. Marquise Simmons was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft.

Simmons played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers before joining ZZ Leiden in the Netherlands in 2016. Simmons averaged 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2016-17.

Sam Stith attended St. Bonaventure and was a standout player during his time there. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in the 1960 NBA draft and played for the team for four seasons.

After playing in the NBA, he moved to the ABA and played for the New Orleans Buccaneers for two seasons. He retired from playing in 1974 and later worked as a coach for several teams. He is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year recipient and is currently the head coach of the Tulsa Shock.

Sam Stith is a retired American basketball player who played in the NBA for the Cincinnati Royals. He is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year recipient and is currently the head coach of the Tulsa Shock. Sam Stith was a shooting guard who played in the NBA from 1961-1964. 

He was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1961 NBA Draft and played for them from 1961-1963. He then played for the Allentown Jets from 1962-1963. He then played for the Wilkes-Barre Barons from 1963-1964. He won an EPBL Championship with the St. 

Bonaventure Bonnies in 1963. He was selected in the 1972 NBA Expansion Draft by the Charlotte Hornets, but never played for them. He later worked as a television commentator for the NBA. 

He was inducted into the St. Bonaventure Bonnies Hall of Fame in 2003. He died in 2016 at the age of 79.

Whitey Martin was born on April 11, 1939 in Buffalo, New York. He attended Bishop Timon High School and played basketball for the school's team. Martin then attended St.

Bonaventure University and played for the Bonnies. In 1961, Martin was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 2nd round. He played for the Knicks for 7 seasons and was a key part of the team's success in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Martin then retired from playing in 1975 and moved to Florida. He has since been involved in coaching and managing basketball teams. Martin was inducted into the St. Bonaventure University Hall of Fame in 1987. He is currently retired and living in Florida.

Whitey Martin was a standout point guard for the New York Knicks in the early 1960s. He was a key player on the team that won two championships in that era. Martin also had a successful career in the Continental Basketball Association. He was inducted into the St.

Bonaventure Bonnies Hall of Fame in 1987. Martin died in 2006 at the age of 70.

Ken Murray was born in West Orange, New Jersey in 1928. Murray played college basketball at St. Bonaventure and was drafted by the Chicago Stags in the 1950 NBA draft.

Murray spent five seasons with the Stags, averaging 11.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Murray was traded to the Baltimore Bullets in 1955 and played one season with them.

After spending two seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Murray retired from the NBA in 1957. Murray worked as a coach and scout with the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Atlanta Hawks.

Murray died in 2008 at the age of 80. Ken Murray was a standout player in college and in the NBA. He was a strong rebounder and passer, and was a key part of several championship teams. He is now a commentator for NBA games.

Glenn Hagan was a standout basketball player at St. Bonaventure. He was a two-time All-American and was drafted in the second round of the 1978 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Hagan spent most of his career with the 76ers, playing in over 500 games and averaging over 10 points per game. He was a key member of the team that made it to the NBA Finals in 1983, but was unable to win the title.

After his playing career was over, Hagan spent several years as a coach, most notably at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure. He is currently the head coach of the Orlando Magic's G-League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic. Glenn Hagan is a two-time inductee into the St.

George Carter was a small forward and shooting guard who played in the NBA from 1967 to 1977. He began his career with the Detroit Pistons, and was a key player for the team during its championship years.

He was also known for his scoring ability and his ability to create shots for others. He eventually retired from the NBA, but continued to play in other leagues. George Carter died in 2020 at the age of 76.

Carter was a prolific scorer in both the ABA and NBA. He averaged 18.1 points per game in the ABA and scored 8,683 points in his career. Carter was a four-time All-Star and a two-time scoring champion in the ABA.

He was also a member of the Virginia Squires' championship team in 1972. Carter played in the NBA for the Washington Caps and Pittsburgh Condors before joining the New York Nets in 1973. He played for the Nets until 1974 and then moved to the Memphis Sounds.

Carter played in Europe for two seasons before returning to the NBA with the Virginia Squires in 1975. 

He retired after the season and was inducted into the St. Bonaventure Bonnies' Hall of Fame in 1998. Carter is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Carter is currently an assistant coach for the Bonnies.

Bill Kenville was an American basketball player who played for the Syracuse Nationals in the NBA for six seasons. Kenville was drafted by the Syracuse Nationals in the third round of the 1953 NBA draft and played for the team for six seasons.

Kenville was best known for his play as a point guard and shooting guard. Kenville died on June 19, 2018 at the age of 87. Kenville was drafted into the NBA with the 15th pick in the 1954 draft. He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Syracuse Nationals.

In 1956, he was traded to the Fort Wayne Pistons and played with them until 1960. He won the NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 1955. 

After leaving the NBA, Kenville played in Europe for a few years. He retired from playing in 1970. He has been a color commentator for Syracuse and Fort Wayne games since the 1970s.

Bill Kenville is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. He has written a number of books on the NBA.

Fred Diute was born in 1929 in Binghamton, New York. He attended St. Bonaventure University and played basketball for the Bonnies from 1947 to 1951. He was drafted by the NBA in 1951 and played for the Rochester Royals, Baltimore Bullets, and Milwaukee Bucks over the course of his 11-year career.

Diute was a versatile player who was able to play both forward and center. He retired from the NBA in 1969 and later played in the American Basketball Association. 

Diute died in 2004 at the age of 75 after a long battle with cancer. He was inducted into the St. Bonaventure University Hall of Fame in 1999.

Diute is remembered for his strong defensive play and his ability to score in the paint. He was a major part of the 1951 St. Bonaventure team that won the NCAA championship.

He was a key player on the Knicks' 1957 NBA championship team. McCann later played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Baltimore Bullets, and Boston Celtics. He retired from the NBA in 1974. McCann is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

He has worked as a basketball coach and broadcaster. McCann was married to his wife, Joan, for over 50 years. They have three children. McCann was the starting point guard for the Allentown Jets during their three EPBL championships. 

McCann was a three-time EPBL champion and is one of the most decorated players in league history. McCann is a two-time All-Star and was named to the EPBL's 50th Anniversary team. McCann was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1957 NBA Draft. 

McCann played for the Knicks for two seasons before joining the Jets in 1960. McCann retired after the 1966 season and later served as the head coach for the Jersey Hitmen. McCann is currently a basketball analyst for ESPN.

McCann was inducted into the EPBL Hall of Fame in 2006. McCann is a favorite among EPBL fans for his gritty play and hard-nosed approach to the game.

Ndoye was born in Dakar, Senegal in 1991. He attended high school at Lee Academy in Maine and played college basketball at St. Bonaventure. Ndoye was undrafted out of college but was signed by the Austin Spurs of the NBA Development League in 2015.

Ndoye has since played for several other teams in the NBA and in Europe. Ndoye is a versatile center who is known for his strong defense and shooting. 

Ndoye is set to join the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2018–19 season. He is a Cameroonian professional basketball player who has played in the Spanish Liga ACB and the French LNB Pro A.

Ndoye has also played for the Cameroonian national team, and he was a member of the squad that competed in the 2019 FIBA Africa Championship. 

Ndoye was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in 1992. He began playing basketball at the age of nine, and he attended the Institut Supérieur des Sports de Yaoundé before moving to Spain to play professionally.

Earl Belcher is a retired American basketball player. Belcher played collegiately at Christian Brothers Academy in DeWitt, New York. He was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round of the 1981 NBA draft.

Belcher played in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors, and Philadelphia 76ers. Belcher was inducted into the Philadelphia 76ers Hall of Fame in 2006. Belcher has also coached basketball at the college level.

Belcher is currently the head coach of the Wyoming Cowboys men's basketball team. Belcher was born in Queens, New York, on December 15, 1958. Earl Belcher is married and has three children. Earl Belcher was a standout forward for St.

Bonaventure during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Earl Belcher was a four-time Eastern 8 Player of the Year and won an NCAA Championship with the Bonnies in 1980. Earl Belcher was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1981 NBA draft and played for the team for two seasons.

Demetrius Conger was an undrafted player who played for Indios de San Francisco in the 2013-14 season. He was then signed by the New Taipei CTBC DEA in Taiwan and has since played for them in the T1 League.

Jim Satalin was a standout guard for St. Bonaventure during the 1960s. He served as an assistant coach for the Bonnies from 1971-1973. Satalin is currently the head coach at Canisius College.

Satalin has a career record of 215-161. He was inducted into the St. Bonaventure University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. Satalin was born in Syracuse, New York in 1946. He played college basketball at St.

Bonaventure from 1965-1969. Satalin became the head coach at Canisius College in 2003. He has led the Golden Griffins to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Satalin served as head coach at Duquesne from 1982 to 1989.

Under his leadership, the Dukes reached the NIT Tournament twice and finished as the Atlantic 10 co-Coach of the Year in 1983. 

Satalin later served as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure from 2009 to 2013. During his time at the Bonnies, Satalin helped the team win a conference championship and reached the NCAA Tournament.

Larry Weise was a basketball coach at St. Bonaventure University from 1961-1973. During his tenure, he led the Bonnies to a record of 208-183. Weise is most well-known for his time at St.

Bonaventure, but he also coached at St. John's University and Boston University. After his coaching career, Weise served as the Athletic Director at St. Bonaventure from 1977-1980. In 1986, Weise was inducted into the St.

Bonaventure University Hall of Fame. Larry Weise died in 2013 at the age of 78. Weise coached at St. Bonaventure for over 20 years, compiling a 202-90 record. He led the Bonnies to the NCAA Tournament in 1992, where they were eliminated by Duke.

After his coaching career, Weise served as an assistant coach at Syracuse and Marquette. He was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Weise is currently an assistant coach at Duquesne.
