Saint Mary’s Gaels Men’s Basketball Best Players of All Time

The Saint Mary’s Gaels men’s basketball team is a powerful force in the West Coast Conference of the NCAA. Led by head coach Randy Bennett, the Gaels have consistently competed for the top spot in the WCC and have had a number of successful seasons.

Home games are played in the University Credit Union Pavilion, a 3,500 capacity gym which serves as a loud and passionate home court for the Gaels. With a rich history of success, Saint Mary’s Gaels men’s basketball team is a force to be reckoned with in the WCC.

A point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Australian national team, Dellavedova has averaged 12.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game in his NBA career.

Dellavedova played college basketball at Saint Mary's before being drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013 without playing a single professional game. He was traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2015 and then signed with the Cavs prior to the 2017–2018 season. 

Where he has stayed ever since despite rumors of potential moves elsewhere throughout his tenure with Cleveland; including during this past off-season when talks of him joining. 

Kawhi Leonard on Los Angeles Lakers was rampant but ultimately fell through due to contract issues between both players' agents (Leonard eventually joined Philadelphia).

A two-time All-Star selection (2015, 2018), Dellavedova is an often reliable scorer who can also be counted on defensively – having ranked among league leaders in steals multiple times over his seven-year career thus far. 

Matthew will turn 33 years old later this year and as such may not have much left in terms of high-level play after spending most of his time recently battling injury problems. 

However he remains one of Australia's most decorated athletes having won several medals at international competitions across different sports (most notably rowing) along with accolades from various fan bases around the globe for what he brings on the court each night.

Simpson was drafted by the Los Angeles D-Fenders in 2009 but never played in the NBA. He has since played with teams such as Alaska Aces and Chihuahuas de Sonora of Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP).

Simpson is a power forward who stands at 6'8" and weighs 228 pounds. Simpson attended Hayward High School before playing college ball at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California from 2005 to 2009 where he helped lead his team to an NCAA Championship appearance in 2007.

In 2010, Simpson signed with the Alaskan Aces of the NBA D-League but left midway through the season after being traded to another team for financial reasons. 

Currently, Simpson plays for Real Betis Baloncesto of Spain's ACB League where he averaged 11 points per game this past season Simpson has played in a number of different countries and leagues over the course of his career, which has given him plenty of experience.

Simpson was named to the All-Iberian League Second Team in 2016 after averaging 21 points per game. Simpson is also an international player for Spain, having won silver at the European Championships in 2015 and bronze at EuroBasket 2017. 

Simpson helped lead Dorados de Chihuahua to their first Liga MX championship since 2000 this past season.

3. Tommy Kuhse

Tommy Kuhse is a G League point guard who was drafted by the Spurs in the second round of the 2018 NBA draft. Kuhse has spent the majority of his career playing for the Austin Spurs, where he has led the team to two G League championships.

Kuhse has a strong defensive game and has averaged over six assists per game in each of his two seasons with Austin. Kuhse is a versatile player who can play both guard positions. He is also a good shooter, averaging over three points per game in both of his seasons in the G League.

Kuhse is considered to have a bright future in the NBA and is currently playing for the Spurs' G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs. Tommy Kuhse is a high school basketball player from Mountain View, Arizona. 

Tommy Kuhse played college basketball for Saint Mary's. Kuhse was drafted in the 2022 NBA draft but did not sign with a team.

Jock Landale is an Australian center who was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the 2018 NBA Draft. He played college basketball at Saint Mary's and made an immediate impact in the NBA.

Adam Caporn is an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets. Caporn attended Saint Mary's University and played for the school's basketball team from 2001 to 2003.

He did not play in the NBA draft but was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia 76ers. Caporn has worked as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets.

Caporn is known for his work with point guards and has helped develop players such as Damian Lillard and Russ Smith. Caporn was born in Baldivis, Western Australia, in 1982. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and two children.

Caporn is a world champion discus thrower. He has worked as a basketball coach with the Australian Institute of Sport and with the Australian national team. Adam Caporn played professional basketball for 13 seasons, most notably with the Wollongong Hawks and Perth Wildcats.

Caporn later became an assistant coach with Saint Mary's, before joining Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence in 2021. Caporn is currently the assistant coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

Clint Steindl was born in 1989 in Mackay, Queensland. He attended Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane, Queensland and played for Saint Mary's College before being drafted by the NBA in 2012.

Steindl has played for the Melbourne Tigers, the Utah Jazz, and the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA. He has also played for the Iowa Energy, the Idaho Stampede, and the Grand Rapids Drive in the NBA D-League.

Steindl is a small forward and shooting guard and is currently playing for the Tasmania JackJumpers in the NBL. Steindl has represented Australia at international level and has won a gold medal at the World Championship in 2011.

He is married and has two children. Steindl is a devout Christian and has spoken about his faith in the media. Clint Steindl is a respected member of the NBA community and is known for his professionalism and dedication to his sport.

Ron Livingstone was born on October 9, 1925 in Oakland, California. After high school, Livingstone attended Modesto JC where he played football and basketball.

In 1946, Livingstone transferred to Saint Mary's where he played basketball and football. In 1947, Livingstone was drafted into the U.S. Army. While serving in the Army, he played for the Pershing Rifles in Wichita, Kansas.

After his discharge from the Army, Livingstone returned to Saint Mary's and played football and basketball. In 1949, Livingstone transferred to the University of California, Berkeley where he played football and basketball. In 1951, Livingstone was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the NFL Draft.

After playing for the Eagles for two years, Livingstone signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 1953. In 1957, Livingstone signed with the Baltimore Colts. 

He played for the Colts until 1965. In 1965, Livingstone signed with the Oakland Raiders. He played for the Raiders until 1991. In 1991, Livingstone retired from professional football.

8. Tom Meschery

Meschery was born in Harbin, Manchukuo (now China), on October 26, 1938. After high school, he attended Lowell (San Francisco, California) and played two seasons of college basketball for Saint Mary's.

He was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors in the 1961 NBA draft and won an NBA championship with them in 1971. Meschery then spent two seasons as a player-coach with the New York Knicks before retiring in 1972.

He has since served as a college basketball coach, most notably at Gonzaga University. Meschery was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992. He currently resides in Spokane, Washington. Meschery has two children and five grandchildren.

Meschery is a Russian/American citizen and speaks Russian and English fluently. Meschery was a two-time first-team all-WCC player and a No. 31 retired by Saint Mary's Gaels. 

He played 12 seasons in the NBA and averaged 12.7 points per game. He is most famous for his time with the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors and Seattle SuperSonics. He retired from the NBA in 1977. Meschery was inducted into the Saint Mary's Gaels Hall of Fame in 2001.

9. Mickey McConnell

Mickey McConnell is an assistant coach for Saint Mary's Gaels in the West Coast Conference. McConnell was born in Mesa, Arizona on April 14, 1989. He attended Dobson High School in Mesa, where he played point guard.

McConnell went on to play college basketball at Saint Mary's, where he was an All-West Coast Conference selection in 2011. In the 2011 NBA draft, McConnell was undrafted but signed with the Sacramento Kings. He played in the NBA for two seasons, before retiring in 2019.

McConnell is now an assistant coach for Saint Mary's. McConnell has a wife and two children. McConnell was born in San Francisco, California in 1977. 

McConnell attended the University of Oregon where he played for the Oregon Ducks. McConnell was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 1997 NBA Draft.

McConnell played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, and the New Orleans Hornets before joining the Memphis Grizzlies in 2010. Mc

Connell played for the Memphis Grizzlies until he was traded to the Sacramento Kings in 2013. McConnell was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2014, but he was waived the next year.

 McConnell then played for the Indiana Pacers and the Brooklyn Nets before joining the Saint Mary's Gaels in 2019. 

McConnell is a two-time WCC Player of the Year and a three-time All-WCC selection. McConnell is also a three-time NBA All-Star and a two-time All-NBA Second Team selection.

10. Randy Bennett

Randy Bennett is in his fourth season as head coach of Saint Mary's, and has led the team to a record of 500-205 (.709). He played college basketball at UC San Diego, where he was a two-time All-WCC selection.

Bennett has had successful stints as an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara, Utah, and Wichita State. Bennett was named head coach at Saint Mary's in 2010, and helped the team make the NCAA Tournament in his first year.

He is well-respected in the basketball community, and was named the WCC Coach of the Year in 2016. Bennett is married with two children. 

Randy Bennett is a successful head coach with 499 wins in 205 games. Bennett has led Saint Mary's to two WCC championships and a 7-7 record in the NCAA Tournament.

Bennett has also been named WCC Coach of the Year four times. Bennett is a fierce competitor and is known for his hard-nosed coaching style. Bennett is a great motivator and is known for his ability to connect with his players. 

Bennett is a smart coach who is able to make adjustments on the fly. Bennett is a passionate person who loves the game of basketball.

11. Augustas Marčiulionis

Augustas Marčiulionis is a young Lithuanian point guard who is currently playing for Saint Mary's Gaels in the WCC. He was a highly touted prospect coming out of high school, and was selected with the 16th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks.

However, he was waived by the Hawks shortly after being drafted and has since been playing in Lithuania and abroad. 

Marčiulionis has shown great potential in the WCC, averaging 16.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. He is a key player for Saint Mary's and is expected to help the Gaels make a run in the conference tournament.

Marčiulionis is a versatile player who can play both guard positions. He has a great attitude and is a hard worker. He is considered a potential lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft. Marčiulionis is a rising star in European basketball and is expected to have a long and successful career.

12. Peter Thibeaux

Peter Thibeaux was born on October 3, 1961, in Los Angeles, California. He attended high school at Skyline in Oakland, California, and then went on to play college basketball for Saint Mary's.

Thibeaux was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the 1983 NBA draft and spent most of his career with the team. He was a four-time all-star and was the runner-up for the MVP award in the 1994–95 season.

Thibeaux was forced to retire from the NBA in 1998 due to injury. He has since pursued a career in broadcasting and is currently an analyst for the NBA on TNT. Thibeaux is also a motivational speaker and has spoken at events such as the Nike Basketball Academy and the NBA All-Star Weekend.

He is married and has two children. Thibeaux is a popular figure in the Bay Area and is often seen out and about in his hometown.

Holt was born in Portland, Oregon in 1991. He played high school basketball at Jesuit in Beaverton, Oregon. Holt attended Saint Mary's College of California for two years before being drafted by the Canton Charge in the 2014 NBA Development League Draft.

Holt signed with the Charge for the 2014–2015 season and played in 38 games. In the 2015 offseason, Holt joined the Golden State Warriors affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. 

Holt spent the 2016–2017 season with the Memphis Grizzlies and the 2017–2018 season with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Holt signed with the Oradea CSM team in the Liga Națională in the 2018–2019 season. Holt is a shooting guard and point guard. Holt has played in 127 NBA games, averaging 2.3 points and 1.7 assists. Holt was a dominant force in the Czech League this season, leading his club to the title.

Holt is a versatile player who can play both frontcourt positions. Holt is a hard worker who plays with a lot of intensity. 

Holt is a well-rounded player who can play any position on the floor. Holt has a high basketball IQ and is a great passer. Holt is a good defender who can block shots or score points in the paint.

Mitchell Young is a power forward who has played professionally in the Queensland Basketball League. Young was born in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, in 1990.

He attended Brisbane State High School, where he was a standout player. Young played college basketball at Saint Mary's in Sydney, Australia. After finishing his college career, Young played in the Queensland Basketball League for the Logan Thunder.

Young is a powerful player who is known for his shooting ability. Young is a hard worker who is always looking for ways to improve his game. 

He is a powerful player who can score in a variety of ways. Young is a valuable member of the Logan Thunder team, and he is looking to help the team win championships.

Mitchell Young is a professional basketball player who has been playing in the Australian NBL since 2007. Young has also played in the Cairns Taipans and the Logan Thunder in the National Basketball League of Australia (NBL). 

In 2018, Young won the QBL All-League Team award. Mitchell Young is a versatile player who can play both on the perimeter and in the post.

Cooke was a power forward in the NBA for over a decade, playing for the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors. He was undrafted out of college, but made a name for himself with the Kings, averaging over 20 points per game in his first two seasons.

Cooke was a key player on the Kings team that won the 1985 championship. He was traded to the Golden State Warriors in 1991, and helped them win two more championships. Cooke retired from the NBA in 2001. He has since worked as a sports commentator and analyst.

Cooke is currently the color commentator for the Sacramento Kings on Fox Sports West. He has two children. David Cooke was born on September 27, 1963, in Sacramento, California. He was raised in a devout Christian household and played high school basketball for the Christian Brothers.

Cooke attended Saint Mary's College, where he played power forward for the Saints. He was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 1985 NBA draft, but never played in a game for the team. Cooke was traded to the Golden State Warriors in 1991, and helped them win back-to-back championships.

Cooke retired from the NBA in 2001. He has since worked as a sports commentator and analyst. Cooke has two children.

Frank Kudelka was born on June 25, 1925 in San Francisco, California. He attended high school at Lowell in San Francisco before going on to Saint Mary's College where he played basketball for the Saint Mary's Gaels in 1946-1949.

Kudelka was not drafted by the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1949 but he did play in the NBL for the Philadelphia Sphas and the Milwaukee Hawks. Kudelka retired from playing basketball in 1953 and began a long and successful coaching career.

He died on May 4, 1993 in San Francisco at the age of 67. Frank Kudelka was a seven-time All-American and one of the most decorated players in basketball history. 

He was a shooting guard and small forward who played for the Chicago Stags, Washington Capitols, Boston Celtics, and Philadelphia Warriors.

Kudelka was one of the best defensive players of his era, and was known for his toughness and rebounding abilities. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. Kudelka died in 2000 at the age of 67 after a long battle with cancer.

Shaw was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers from 2010-2015. He was a standout player at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, California. Shaw was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the 1988 NBA draft.

Shaw played for the Saint Mary's Gaels and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. Shaw has also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Milwaukee Bucks. 

Shaw is currently an assistant coach with the Clippers. Shaw is a two-time NBA coach of the year ( 2007-2008 with Philadelphia and 2013-2014 with Milwaukee).

Shaw was inducted into the Saint Mary's Hall of Fame in 2016. Shaw is married and has two children. As a player, Shaw was a two-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion with the Lakers.

 Shaw then served as an assistant coach with the Lakers for three seasons before joining the Pacers in 2013. Shaw led the Nuggets to the playoffs in his first season as head coach, but they were eliminated in the first round.

In 2015, Shaw was named the new head coach of the Lakers, but he was fired just two seasons later. Shaw is currently an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics.

Omar Samhan was born in 1988 in Oakland, California. He played college basketball at Saint Mary's. He was undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft but has since played for Žalgiris and the Tropang Texters.

He is 6'11" and weighs 268 pounds. He is currently a free agent. Omar Samhan is a Sudanese-born American basketball player who has played in the Lithuanian and Egyptian leagues. He was a two-time first-team All-WCC selection and was a defensive player of the year in his junior year at Brigham Young.

He was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the 2010 NBA Draft. He has played for the Mavericks, the Atlanta Hawks, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Orlando Magic. 

He has also played for the Turkish team Ekranas and the Egyptian team Alexandria Sporting Club. He is a member of the Sudanese national basketball team.

He has also played for the United States national basketball team. He is married and has two children.

Gray was a standout high school basketball player in San Francisco, California. He attended Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California, where he played basketball and football.

Gray was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the fourth round of the 1963 NBA draft. Gray played in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers (1963-1967), the Detroit Pistons (1967-1968), and the Chicago Bulls (1968-1969).

Gray then played in the American Basketball Association for the Oakland Oaks (1969-1970), the Utah Stars (1970-1971), and the Cincinnati Royals (1971-1972). 

Gray retired from professional basketball in 1972. Gray has since worked in the entertainment industry, most notably as a television commentator and game show host.

Gray was inducted into the San Francisco Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Gray currently resides in Northern California.

Daniel Kickert played professional basketball for 11 seasons, most notably with the Sydney Kings. As an assistant coach, Kickert will help lead the Kings to future success.

Daniel Kickert was born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria. He attended high school at Aquinas College, where he was a standout power forward and center. Kickert was never drafted into the NBA, but he had a successful professional career nonetheless.

After retiring as a player, Kickert became an assistant coach with the Sydney Kings. He is dedicated to helping his team reach the pinnacle of basketball competition. 

Daniel Kickert is an Australian international and was a member of the Australian national team in the 2006 World Cup.

He is married and has two children. Daniel Kickert is a professional basketball coach and player who has played in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) and the EuroLeague.

Garrett Jackson is currently an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies. Garrett Jackson is a small forward and power forward who played in the NBA draft but was undrafted. He played college basketball at North-West Tasmania Thunder.

After college, he played in the NBA for the Sydney Kings and Dandenong Rangers. He then moved to Germany and played for the sOliver Wuerzburg. 

He has since returned to the NBA and is currently an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics. He has won several awards, including an All-SEABL Team selection in 2016.

Ian O'Leary was born in Woodland, California on October 20, 1986. O'Leary attended Woodland Christian High School where he played basketball and football.

O'Leary played college basketball at Saint Mary's. He was a three-time All-West Coast Conference selection and an honorable mention All-America selection in 2009.

O'Leary declared for the 2009 NBA draft but was not drafted. He played in Europe for a few seasons before returning to the NBA in 2013. O'Leary signed with the Memphis Grizzlies but was released before the 2014–15 season began.

He then signed with the Dallas Mavericks but was released before the 2015–16 season began. O'Leary signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in March 2016 and played in 43 games for the team before being waived in February 2017. 

O'Leary signed with the Memphis Grizzlies again in March 2017 and played in 43 games for the team before being waived in December 2017.

O'Leary signed with the Golden State Warriors in December 2017 and played in 22 games for the team before being waived in February 2018. O'Leary signed with the Atlanta Hawks in February 2018 and played in 47 games for the team before being waived in May 2018.

E. J. Rowland played for CSU Dominguez Hills before transferring to Saint Mary's. He was not drafted in the 2005 NBA draft but played professionally in several countries.

Rowland has played for several Polish teams, most notably Hapoel Jerusalem, where he was an important player in their championship-winning season in 2015. Rowland is a natural point guard and is known for his passing skills.

E. J. Rowland is a professional basketball player who has played for several teams in Europe and North America. 

Rowland has won several awards, including the EuroLeague MVP and the Polish Cup MVP. Rowland has also been named to the All-EuroLeague Second Team and the All-EuroCup First Team.

Rowland is a serious player who is known for his toughness and willingness to throw his body around the court. Rowland is a versatile player who can play both at the point guard and shooting guard positions. 

Rowland is expected to join the Hungarian team, Győri ETO, in 2020. Rowland is a hard worker who is always looking to improve his game.

LaRoy Doss was born on October 6, 1936 in San Francisco, California. LaRoy Doss was a American actor, best known for his roles in the films The Exorcist, Jaws, and Star Wars.

LaRoy Doss passed away on September 7, 2004 at the age of 67 after a long battle with cancer. LaRoy Doss was a high school graduate and a Sacred Heart student. LaRoy Doss achieved international fame for his roles in the films The Exorcist, Jaws, and Star Wars.

LaRoy Doss is buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in San Francisco. LaRoy Doss was an important player for Saint Mary's during the late 1950s and early 1960s. 

Doss was a powerful forward who scored points in bunches. He was a two-time WCC Player of the Year and helped the Gaels win two NCAA championships.

Doss is best remembered for his performance in the 1959 NCAA championship game against Kentucky. After playing in the NBA for a few seasons, Doss returned to Saint Mary's and served as the school's athletic director for many years. 

LaRoy Doss was a great player and an even better person. He will long be remembered by Saint Mary's fans.

He was not drafted in the 2005 NBA Draft, but played professionally in France for four seasons. In 2010, he signed with the Golden State Warriors and played in the NBA for two seasons.

He returned to France and signed with the Utah Jazz in 2013. He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2015 and retired in 2016. Frédéric Adjiwanou is a center who played professionally in the NBA for two seasons and in France for four.

Matt Hodgson was born on 2 August 1991 in Ipswich, Queensland. Hodgson attended Ipswich Grammar School before going to Southern Utah University where he played basketball.

Hodgson was not drafted by an NBA team but he has played for the Adelaide 36ers and the Frankston Blues in the Australian National Basketball League (NBA Development League).

Hodgson is a centre and he is averaging 10.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in the Australian National Basketball League. Hodgson is a member of the Australian national basketball team and he has played in the World Cup in 2015 and the Olympics in 2016.

Hodgson is a good all-round player and he is likely to continue playing in the NBA Development League and in the Australian National Basketball League for the foreseeable future.

Joe Coleman was born on June 16, 1993 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is American and stands at 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m). Coleman started his professional career in 2013 with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In 2016, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets and played for them for two seasons. In 2018, Coleman was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers and played for them for one season. Coleman played college basketball for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Walker was born in Tasmania in 1984. Walker played college basketball for Montana State-Billings. Walker was undrafted in the 2009 NBA draft but has since played for the Illawarra Hawks in the NBL1 East.

Walker has averaged career highs in points (10.0) and rebounds (4.9) per game in the 2016/17 season. Walker is a strong two-way player who is known for his explosive dunks. Walker has been a part of the Australian national basketball team on a number of occasions.
