 Purcell attended St Joseph's school in Nudgee and became interested in the theatre at an early age.

Purcell began his career in the early 1960s, appearing in various stage productions. Purcell made his television debut in the Australian soap opera "The Young Doctors" in 1966. 

Purcell became well-known in the U.S. after starring in the soap opera "Another World" from 1978 to 1981.

Purcell continued to act throughout the 1980s and 1990s, appearing in various television productions. Purcell released his first album in 1967 and has since released several more. 

Purcell died on January 5, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. Purcell was a flanker for the Wallabies from 1966 to 1972.

Purcell was a key player for Australia during the early stages of their rugby union career, winning three tests and scoring zero points. 

Purcell was also an important member of the Wallabies side that won the 1971 Rugby World Cup. Purcell went on to play for several other teams, but never reached the same level of success as he did with Australia.
