The Akron Zips are the intercollegiate athletic teams of the University of Akron, located in Akron, Ohio. Representing the university in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level, the Zips compete as a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East division, and sponsor 17 varsity teams across six men’s, 10 women’s, and one coed NCAA sanctioned sports.

The Zips have a long and proud tradition of athletics excellence, with numerous MAC championships and appearances in the NCAA Tournament. With a commitment to hard work and dedication, the Akron Zips strive to be the best they can be both on and off the field.

Jason Taylor was a dominant defensive player in the NFL for many years. He played for three different teams, the Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, and now the New York Jets.

Jason is currently an analyst on ESPN's Monday Night Football telecast and has been since 2011. In 2007 he was awarded the Super Bowl XLII MVP award after leading Miami to victory over New England in that year's championship game.

Jason also has two children - a daughter (Jenna) who is also an athlete and a son (Trey) who plays football at Louisiana State University Jason Taylor is a well-known NFL defensive lineman who has played for the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jason Taylor was born in Daytona Beach, Florida on February 8th, 1982. After playing college football at St Thomas Aquinas HS in Fort Lauderdale, Jason was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2000 with their first pick (6th overall). 

His rookie season saw him make 4 Pro Bowls and be named to the All-Rookie team as he helped lead the Dolphins to their first playoff appearance since 1996.

In 2002 his performance improved even more as he made 7 Pro Bowls and won Defensive Player of The Year honors from both ESPN & Sports Illustrated magazine despite only starting 10 games that year due to injury concerns (he finished 2nd in voting behind Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis). 

Jason finally win his 1st Super Bowl title after leading all defenders with 11 sacks during Miami’s undefeated regular season campaign which culminated in a 34–7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Dolphin Stadium – one of the greatest upsets ever in American sports history.

Having retired following the 2012 season aged 36 years old, Jason currently serves as an analyst for Buccaneer TV broadcasts alongside former teammates.

Dwight Smith was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2001-2004), New Orleans Saints (2005) and Minnesota Vikings (2006-2007).

In 2007, he signed with the Detroit Lions and played there until 2013. After leaving Detroit, Dwight Smith has continued to play football at a lower level. Smith was a two-time All American and Super Bowl champion with the Detroit Lions in 2008.

Smith had an impressive NFL career, amassing 449 tackles, 23 interceptions and 10 forced fumbles. He retired after the 2013 season, but came back to play for the Baltimore Ravens in 2016 before retiring again later that year.

Jatavis Brown was drafted in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played for the San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Chargers before being signed by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020.

Brown was born in Belle Glade, Florida in 1994 and attended Glades Central High School. He played linebacker for the Chargers and Eagles before being released by the Eagles in 2020. Brown has played in 54 games over his 4-year career, making 36 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 interception.

He is the cousin of former NFL player Lavonte David. Brown is a member of the Cleveland, Ohio-based church Elevation Church. Brown was one of the most productive and versatile players during his time at Akron. He played both inside and outside linebacker, and showed great athleticism and instincts.

Brown was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2015 and 2016 and was also a finalist for the MAC Defensive Player of the Year award in 2016. Brown was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens. 

He is looking to make an impact in the NFL. Brown will have to compete for a roster spot with the Ravens this season, but he has the potential to be a valuable player in the NFL.

Domenik Hixon is a former NFL wide receiver who spent his entire career with the Giants. Hixon was a fourth round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, and was a part of the Giants' Super Bowl XLII team.

Schifino was a standout kick returner and receiver at Penn Hills high school in Pittsburgh. He played college football at Akron and was a two-time All-MAC selection.

Schifino was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He has played for the Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Carolina Panthers. Schifino has returned kickoffs for touchdowns in both the NFL and the CFL.

Schifino is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers' Hall of Fame. Schifino was married to Kara Schifino in May of 2018. Schifino has two children, a son and a daughter. Schifino is a restaurateur by trade and owns Jake's Sports Bar in Pittsburgh.

Joe Moorhead is the current head coach of the Akron Zips football team. He has been with the program since the beginning of the 2017 season. Prior to his time as the head coach of Akron, Moorhead was the offensive coordinator for the Memphis Tigers.

He helped the Tigers to a record of 10–2 in his two seasons with the team. Joe Moorhead played quarterback for Fordham and Munich Cowboys in the early 1990s. He has since turned to coaching as his main focus. Joe Moorhead is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.

He played quarterback for the Panthers from 1992 to 1995. After his playing career, Joe Moorhead served as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Panthers from 1998 to 1999.

 Joe Moorhead then moved on to become the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas. He led the team to a record of 10–2 in his two seasons with the program.

Joe Moorhead was hired as the head coach of the Akron Zips in early 2017. He is in his first season with the team. Joe Moorhead is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Melissa, have two children. 

Joe Moorhead is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He played quarterback for the Panthers from 1992 to 1995. He then served as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Panthers from 1998 to 1999. He was then hired as the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas. 

He led the team to a record of 10–2 in his two seasons with the program. Joe Moorhead was hired as the head coach of the Akron Zips in early 2017. He is in his first season with the team.

Reggie Corner was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2008 NFL Draft. Corner played for the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals before joining the Seattle Seahawks in 2016.

Corner has played in 116 games and has recorded 393 tackles, 11 interceptions, and one sack during his career. Corner is a four-time Pro Bowler and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2016.

Corner is a member of the NFL's All-Defensive Team and the Seahawks' All-Century Team. Corner is married with two children. Corner is a native of Canton, Ohio. Corner is a member of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

Reggie Corner is a cornerback who has played in the NFL for eight seasons. Corner had a standout career at Southern Illinois University, where he was a First-Team All-American and a member of the SIU Sports Hall of Fame. Corner was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

He played for the Bills for four seasons before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012. Corner had a strong season with the Jaguars, recording 54 tackles and 2 interceptions. 

Corner is a six-time Pro Bowler and a two-time All-Pro. Corner is currently a free agent and is reportedly considering retirement.

Corner is a versatile defender who can play both on the outside and in the middle of the defense. Corner is a sound tackler and has excellent instincts. Corner is a valuable member of any team and is a key contributor on both the defensive and special teams units.

Andy Alleman was one of the best guards in the NFL in 2009. He was an all-around player and was very good in pass protection. Alleman was drafted in the third round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007.

He has also played for the Cleveland Browns and the Indianapolis Colts. Alleman is married and has two children. He is currently a free agent. Alleman is a devout Christian and has spoken about his faith in the past.

Alleman is a member of the National Football League Players Association. Alleman is a native of Akron, Ohio. Alleman is a sports enthusiast and is known for his love of baseball, basketball, and football. Alleman is a member of the Pro Football Writers of America.

Gilbert was a two-time All-American linebacker at Trinity Catholic in Ocala, Florida. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2019 NFL Draft. Gilbert started all 16 games for the Buccaneers in 2018, recording 104 tackles, two sacks, and one interception.

Gilbert is expected to be a centerpiece of the Buccaneers' defense in 2019. Gilbert played at the University of Miami, where he finished with 207 tackles and 9.5 sacks in three seasons. Gilbert was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Gilbert made his NFL debut in Week 3 of the 2019 season, recording two tackles. Gilbert played in all 16 games of the 2019 season, recording 49 tackles and two sacks. Gilbert was voted to the Pro Bowl in the 2019 season. Gilbert enters the 2020 season as a starter for the Steelers.

Justin March-Lillard played linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys for the 2017 and 2020 seasons. March-Lillard was undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft but signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He has a younger brother, Elijah, who plays for the Akron Zips football team. March-Lillard is married and has one child. He has spoken about his experiences with mental health issues. March-Lillard was an All-MAC selection as a junior and senior at Toledo.

He was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May of 2017. March-Lillard made the 49ers 53-man roster and played in all 16 games in 2017. 

He recorded 45 tackles, zero sacks, and no interceptions in 2017. March-Lillard was waived by the 49ers in September of 2017 and was signed to the practice squad.

He was promoted to the active roster in December of 2017 and played in three games. March-Lillard was waived by the 49ers again in February of 2018 and was signed to the practice squad.

Zach D'Orazio is a 31-year-old wide receiver who was undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft. D'Orazio attended Cuyahoga Heights High School in Avon Lake, Ohio.

He played for the Akron Zips of the Mid-American Conference. D'Orazio was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He has not played in the NFL since 2015.

Reader was a fullback at the University of Washington where he was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection. Reader was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 1996.

He played in Seattle for four seasons before being released in 2000. Reader signed with the Baltimore Ravens and played there for four seasons before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006.

Reader signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2009 and played for them for three seasons before retiring in 2013. Reader has been a color commentator for NFL games on Fox Sports since 2006. Reader was inducted into the Washington State Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Reader has two children, a son and a daughter. Reader is a leadership consultant for businesses and organizations. Reader is a member of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

Louis Mackey played linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys from 2001 to 2002. Mackey attended Akron University and was undrafted in 2001. He played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2006 to 2007.

Mackey has also played for the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Baltimore Ravens. Mackey is a two-time All-Pro and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2002. Mackey is known for his hard hitting on the field.

He is married with two children. Mackey retired from the NFL in 2007. He now works as a commentator for NFL Network. 

Mackey was drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Mackey played in 16 games with the Giants and recorded 12 total tackles, one fumble recovery, and two passes defended.

Mackey was traded to the Montreal Alouettes in 2013 and played in all 16 games for the team that season. Mackey was traded to the Arizona Cardinals in 2016 and played in all 16 games for the team that season. 

Mackey signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and played in all 16 games for the team that season. Mackey was released by the 49ers in September of 2018. Mackey is currently a free agent and is likely to sign with another team in the near future.

Daron Alcorn is a former NFL kicker who spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Frankfurt Galaxy, Portland Forest Dragons, and Oklahoma Wranglers. Alcorn is best known for his time with the Buccaneers, where he made 88 field goal attempts and scored a total of 223 points.

Alcorn has since retired from football and currently resides in Portland, Oregon. Alcorn is a father of two and is currently involved in a number of philanthropic endeavors. 

Alcorn was born in Vancouver, Washington and attended Mountain View High School. Alcorn was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft.

John Buddenberg was a standout offensive lineman at Bellaire High School in Wheeling, West Virginia. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the tenth round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

He spent three seasons with the Browns before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 1990. He spent two seasons with the Vikings before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992.

He spent two seasons with the Steelers before retiring in 1994. John Buddenberg is now a football analyst for ESPN. He was inducted into the Wheeling High School Hall of Fame in 2009. He married his wife, Karen, in 1992.

They have two children. Buddenberg was a key player on the Falcons' 1991 and 1992 teams that reached the playoffs. He played for the Sacramento Gold Miners and San Antonio Texans in the 1993 and 1994 seasons, but never made it to the NFL.

Buddenberg is now a coach in the NFL, working with the Philadelphia Eagles. Buddenberg is a two-time All-WLAF selection and was inducted into the Falcons' Hall of Fame in 2006. Buddenberg is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles' coaching staff.

Jarrod Pughsley was a three-year starter at left guard for the Akron Zips and was one of the most highly-rated guards in the country. 

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Pughsley in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, but he was not signe Pughsley was a standout receiver at the University of Miami and was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Pughsley was a key member of the Chiefs' offense in his rookie season, catching 26 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns. In 2015, Pughsley saw his production decline, catching just 21 passes for 244 yards and one touchdown. 

However, in 2016, Pughsley was a key part of the Chiefs' offense once again, catching 58 passes for 825 yards and five touchdowns. Pughsley was traded to the Baltimore Ravens in the middle of the 2017 season and enjoyed a breakout year, catching 82 passes for 1,412 yards and nine touchdowns.

Jim Dennison is a former football coach and player who has spent most of his career coaching at the high school level. Dennison began his coaching career at Wadsworth High School in Ohio in 1960 before moving on to Elyria High School in 1963.

29. John Heisman

Heisman was an American football player and coach. He played for Brown University and then for the University of Pennsylvania. He was the head football coach at Oberlin College from 1892 to 1894 and at the University of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1896.

Blair died in 1947 in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 47. Blair was a pioneer in the development of the halfback position, and is considered one of the greatest coaches in Akron history. Blair's legacy is continued by his son, Bob Blair, who is also a successful coach.

Blair is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Red Blair was a highly skilled football player who helped lead Ohio State to national championships in 1920 and 1922. 

Blair was also a successful coach, leading the Akron Zips to five conference championships. Blair was one of the most successful coaches in SWMU history.

He led the Bulldogs to two MIAA championships in football and one in basketball. Blair was also a successful administrator. In 1938 he was named Southwest Missouri State's assistant athletic director. 

In 1946 Blair was named SWMU's head basketball coach. He led the Bulldogs to an 89-40 record and one OAC championship. Blair retired from coaching in 1947 and went on to a successful administrative career.

He served as Southwest Missouri State's AD until his retirement in 1977. Blair was inducted into the SWMU Hall of Fame in 1987. Blair died in 1987.

32. Alfred W. Place

Alfred Place was a player in Major League Baseball who played from 1906 to 1922. Place was best known for his time with the Boston Red Sox, where he was a three-time All-Star and led the league in hitting twice.

Place was also a consistent hitter, batting over .300 in nine of his thirteen seasons. After retiring from baseball, Place served as a coach and manager for several teams. Alfred Place was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.

He died in 1955 at the age of 78 after a long illness. Alfred Place is remembered as one of the most successful hitters in baseball history. Place was an End for the Chicago Bears from 1899-1900. Place was the head coach for the Buchtel Indians from 1903-1906.

Place had a record of 0-2 during his coaching career. Place died in 1916. Place is most well-known for his role as an End for the Bears.

33. James W. Coleman

James Coleman was a football coach for 22 years, most notably at Georgetown (KY) and Minot State. Coleman was responsible for helping turn around both schools, and led Minot State to a national championship in 1936.

He retired from coaching in the early 1950s, but continued to work in education. Coleman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984. He died in 1985. Coleman was the head coach of Georgetown University's men's basketball team from 1922-1925.

He led the Hoyas to a 19-5 record and an appearance in the 1925 NCAA Tournament. Coleman also coached the Akron Zips from 1924-1925. He spent four seasons as the head coach of Minot State University's basketball team. Coleman was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.

Coleman was also a successful track coach. He led the Nevada track and field team to a record of 36-4 during his tenure. Coleman died in 1986.

34. Archie Eves

Archie Eves was born in 1876 in Akron, Ohio. He was a farmer and farmer's son. He served in World War I and World War II. He was a member of the American Legion.

He was a Republican. He died in 1958. Archie Eves was a head coach at Watsonville High School for over thirty years. Archie Eves led the school to two state championships in 1977 and 1980.

Archie Eves is credited with helping to develop the school's basketball program into a powerhouse. Archie Eves retired from coaching in 1996, but continues to serve as an adviser to the team.

Archie Eves was inducted into the California High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2001. Archie Eves passed away in 2015 at the age of 98. Archie Eves is remembered as one of the most successful coaches in Watsonville High School history.

Paul Baldacci was a long-time U.S. Congressman, Governor of Massachusetts, and ultimately a U.S. Senator from Connecticut. Baldacci is best known for his novel, The 1948 Tel-Buch, which won the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1977.

He also wrote several other books, including The Winner, The Betrayal, and The Zebra. Baldacci died of cancer in 1984 at the age of 77. Paul Baldacci played football and basketball at William and Mary. After playing football and basketball at William and Mary, Baldacci began his coaching career at St.

Benedict HS in Virginia. Baldacci then moved to Akron, where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons. In 1946, Baldacci was hired as the head coach of the Akron Zips. 

He led the team to a 7–10 record over the course of his two seasons. Baldacci then moved back to Virginia, where he served as the head coach of the Oak Hill Academy for three seasons.

In 1951, Baldacci was hired as the head coach of the University of Maine. He led the team to a record of 47–5 over the course of his five seasons. Baldacci then moved to the Washington Redskins, where he served as the team's head coach for seven seasons. 

In 1978, Baldacci was hired as the head coach of the United States Football League's Baltimore Stars. He led the team to a record of 2–14 over the course of his one season.

Baldacci retired from coaching in 1981. He later served as the mayor of Waterville, Maine.

Otis Douglas was born on July 25, 1911 in Reedville, Virginia. Douglas played tackle for the William & Mary team from 1929-1931 and then for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1946-1949.

Douglas served as the head coach of the Kilmarnock Panthers from 1961-1969 and compiled a record of 43-50-4. Douglas passed away on March 21, 1989 in Kilmarnock, Virginia at the age of 77.

Otis Douglas was a football player and coach at several different schools, most notably at William & Mary and Akron. Douglas played for the William & Mary Tribe from 1935 to 1938 and then for Akron from 1939 to 1940.

Douglas served as the head coach at Akron from 1941 to 1942. Douglas then coached at Drexel from 1948 to 1949 and again from 1950 to 1952. Douglas was the head coach at the Baltimore Colts in 1953 and 1954. Douglas then served as the head coach at Villanova from 1956 to 1960.

Douglas had a total of 17 wins and 34 losses as a head coach. Douglas later served as the athletic director at William & Mary from 1971 to 1987. Otis Douglas passed away in 1987.

37. J. D. Brookhart

J. D. Brookhart is a former NFL player who spent time with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers. Brookhart started his playing career at BYU before transferring to Colorado State.

He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1987 and spent three seasons with the team. Brookhart then spent two seasons with the Denver Broncos as an assistant coach. He returned to coaching in 1997, this time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Brookhart was appointed head coach of the Denver Broncos in 1995 but resigned after two seasons. He has since coached at Pittsburg (1997-1998) and the University of Pittsburgh (1999). Brookhart has also been a color commentator for NFL games.

J. D. Brookhart currently resides in Colorado. Brookhart was the head coach of the Akron Zips from 2004-2009 and compiled a 30-42 record. 

Brookhart led the Zips to a MAC championship in 2005 and was named Coach of the Year. Brookhart is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Brookhart played quarterback at Pitt from 1990-1993 and holds the school record for passing yards in a season. Brookhart is a native of Pittsburgh and has coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels.

38. Jim Aiken

Jim Aiken Career

Jim Aiken was a football player and coach in the 1920s. He played for Washington & Jefferson in the early part of his career, and then coached at Toledo Scott HS for a few years.

After leaving coaching, he moved to Oregon and died there in 1961. Aiken was a versatile player, able to play both as an end and a linebacker. He was inducted into the Toledo Scott HS Hall of Fame in 1981.

He was a member of the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and the Washington & Jefferson Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the American Football Coaches Association and the National Football Foundation.

Aiken was a very successful coach, leading his teams to several championships. He is widely respected as a football pioneer. Aiken was a head coach for Nevada from 1939 to 1947, and also served as the athletic director for the school during that time.

He led the team to a championship in 1939, and also compiled a record of 78 wins and 53 losses in his college football career. 

He also coached basketball at Nevada from 1944 to 1945, and led the team to a record of 8 wins and 9 losses. Aiken later served as the head coach at Roseburg High School in Oregon from 1960 to 1961.

He retired from coaching in 1961, but continued to work in the athletic department at Nevada until his retirement in 1985. Aiken was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992. He died in 2015 at the age of 98.

39. Dan Callahan

Dan Callahan was a guard who played for the Boston Celtics from 1962 to 1974. He averaged 13.9 points and 5.1 rebounds during his career. He was a six-time All-Star and was the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 1970.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985. He currently resides in Akron, Ohio. Dan Callahan was a long time NFL player who was a linebacker and offensive lineman. Callahan was drafted by the New York Titans in 1960, and played for the team for 11 seasons.

He was part of the team that won the AFL Championship in 1966, and he also played in the Super Bowl in 1977. 

Callahan was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1986, and he currently works as an NFL analyst. Callahan is known for his toughness and grit in the NFL, and he is a regular commentator on NFL Network.

He has two children, and he currently resides in Akron, Ohio.

Final Words

The Akron Zips have had a long and storied history in the collegiate athletics world. They have produced some of the best athletes in the country, and have had many players go on to successful careers in the pros.

Some of the best players in Zips history include LeBron James, Deron Williams, and Gary Payton.
