Wisconsin high school basketball is a beloved tradition in the state, with many teams and players competing each year to become the best in the state. Every year, numerous tournaments take place around the state, allowing the best teams and players to show off their skills and compete for a championship.

It’s a great way for the local high school teams to gain recognition and bring their community together. In addition to the competitive nature of the tournaments, Wisconsin high school basketball also offers many opportunities for participants to develop their skills and have fun.

With a strong history of producing some of the best high school basketball players in the nation, Wisconsin high school basketball is a great way for anyone to get involved in the sport.

Jonathan Davis is a shooting guard/small forward who played college basketball for Wisconsin. He was drafted by the Washington Wizards in the 2022 NBA draft and has since played for them throughout his career.

Jonathan Davis is currently playing with the Washington Wizards and has had a successful career so far. Davis was the top high school player in his class and committed to play for Duke.

 Davis averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists as a freshman at Duke and led the Blue Devils to an ACC title.

After one season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Davis was traded to Memphis Grizzlies where he became a key contributor on their playoff team in 2017-2018. 

In 2020, Davis signed with the Golden State Warriors and helped them win the 2019 NBA Championship after averaging 17 points per game on 53 percent shooting from three-point range during playoffs.

Ethan Happ was born on May 7, 1996 in Milan, Illinois. He attended high school at Rockridge (Taylor Ridge, Illinois) and played college basketball for the Wisconsin Badgers.

He was drafted by the Olympiacos Basket Club of Greece in 2019 but did not sign with them and instead joined the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2020–21 NBA season. Ethan Happ has been a key player for the Bucks this season and is averaging 15 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists per game.

Ethan Happ is a senior forward for Vanoli Cremona in the Italian Serie A. He was named consensus second-team All-American and third-team All-American by both the Associated Press (AP) and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). 

Ethan Happ won the Pete Newell Big Man Award, which goes to the best big man in Italy’s top professional league, as well as Kareem Abdul Jabbar Award, given annually to Europe’s top center.

Ethan Happ has twice been selected first team all Big Ten Conference while also earning honorable mention accolades from media members on three occasions each over his four years at Purdue University. 

The Chicago native started every game he played during his freshman campaign before breaking out as one of college basketball’s most dominant frontcourt players with unanimous.

First Team All American honors as a sophomore followed by becoming just the sixth player ever to earn Third Team AP and NABC recognition unanimously following his junior season.

Michigan State defeated #1 Kansas 73–68 in overtime on February 25th 2019 in what would be Happs final collegiate game (#15 PENN STATE 85 – WISCONSIN 67) In 35 games played (34 starts), he averaged 18 points (7th nationally), 10 rebounds per game, 1 block shot per contest.

While shooting 53% from field and 38% from 3 point range en route to being voted 2nd Team Final Four MVP after leading Penn State straight back into NCAA Tournament contention following their 8 year absence prior to his Senior season.

Greg Stiemsma played center for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2008-2015. He was undrafted in the 2008 NBA Draft, but was signed by the Wolves as a free agent.

He won two championship rings with the Boston Celtics in 2013 and 2017, and also made an appearance in the 2016 NBA Finals. After his playing career ended, he became a Development Associate for the Timberwolves organization.

Greg Stiemsma was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2010 NBA Draft. He spent three seasons with the Celtics before being traded to Minnesota Timberwolves in February 2013. 

In his first season with Minnesota, he helped them make it to the playoffs and became an important part of their team defense.

In 2015, he was traded to Toronto Raptors and played there for two seasons before returning to Minnesota as a player development associate for the 2019-present season.

Nate Oats is the current head coach of Alabama and has led the Crimson Tide to a 74-38 record in his three seasons at the helm. Prior to coaching, Nate spent time as an assistant with Wisconsin–Whitewater and Romulus HS.

In his nine years of coaching experience, he's helped lead teams to success both on and off the court. Nate Oats is a former college and high school basketball coach who currently holds the title of head coach at Alabama.

Oats has led the Crimson Tide to four consecutive MAC tournament championships, as well as two regular season titles in the MAC East Division. He was also named SEC Coach of the Year for 2021 after leading Alabama to their first berth in an NCAA Tournament since 2014.

Nate Oats began his coaching career at Buffalo before moving on to lead Alabama in 2019.

Joey Hauser is a young power forward for the Michigan State Spartans. He was born on July 17, 1999 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Hauser played high school basketball for the Carthage Crusaders in Carthage, Michigan.

He averaged 23.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game as a senior. Hauser was a three-star recruit and was considered one of the top power forwards in his class. He chose Michigan State over offers from Kentucky, Purdue, and Wisconsin.

Hauser made his debut for the Michigan State Spartans during the 2017–18 season. He played in 24 games, averaging 6.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. Hauser played in all 33 games for the Michigan State Spartans during the 2018–19 season.

He averaged 8.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. Hauser was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2018. Hauser declared for the 2019 NBA draft but did not hire an agent. He is eligible to return to Michigan State for the 2020–21 season.

Hauser was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets with the 47th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft. He signed a three-year contract with the Nets. Hauser is a versatile power forward who can play both inside and out. He is a good passer and ball handler. He is also a strong defender.

Shaka Smart is the current head coach of Marquette and has led the Golden Eagles to a 36-18 record in his three seasons at the helm. A three-time National Assistant Coach of the Year, Smart has a reputation as a tireless recruiter and skilled strategist.

Smart played point guard for Kenyon College and was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft. After a brief stint in the NBA, Smart spent several years coaching in the college ranks, most notably at Clemson and California (PA).

In 2013, Smart was hired as head coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, where he led the team to a 20-win season and the ACC Tournament title in his first season. 

In 2016, Smart was appointed head coach of the Marquette Golden Eagles, where he has led the team to back-to-back conference championships and a 36-18 record over three seasons.

7. Sam Okey

Sam Okey is a high school basketball player from Wisconsin who is widely considered to be one of the best in the country. He has led his team to two state championships, and was a key player on the team that made it to the national championships last year.

Okey is a versatile player who can score, pass, and rebound. He is a hard worker who has dedicated his entire life to basketball. Okey is an inspiration to his fans, and his passion for the game is clear to see. He is a true team player who always puts the team first.

Okey is a true ambassador of his sport, and he is sure to have a long and successful career in basketball. He is a true role model for young athletes, and his story is sure to inspire others to pursue their dreams.

Bronson Koenig was a guard for Wisconsin from 2013-2017. He averaged 11.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game during his college career. Koenig declared for the 2017 NBA draft but was not selected.

Koenig is now a free agent and is looking to sign with a new team. Koenig is 6'4" and 195 pounds, so he is a big guard. Koenig is a versatile player who can play both guard positions. Koenig is a good shooter and passer.

Butch was a standout high school player who played college basketball at Wisconsin. He was selected by the NBA as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and played for four teams over six seasons.

Butch retired from playing in 2017, but returned to coaching the following year. Butch is currently the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball team. Butch was a standout player at Indiana University and was drafted in the second round of the 2008 NBA draft by the Jiangsu Dragons.

Butch was named the NBA D-League Impact Player of the Year in 2010 after leading the Dragons to the playoffs. Butch spent two seasons with the Giants Nördlingen before joining the Ilisiakos in 2009. 

Butch then played for the Bakersfield Jam and the Atléticos de San Germán before joining the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in 2014.

Butch was named the Meralco Bolts head coach in 2015. Butch led the Zephyr Fukuoka to the Japan Basketball League playoffs in his first season as coach. Butch is currently an assistant coach with the Wisconsin Herd.

Keaton Nankivil is an American power forward who currently plays for Serie A side Orlandina Basket. He has previously played for several teams in the NBA, most notably the Milwaukee Bucks and the Toronto Raptors.

Nankivil started his career at James Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wisconsin. He was a three-time All-American and twice named the National Player of the Year. 

Nankivil played one season of college basketball at the University of Wisconsin before being drafted in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.

He played for the Bucks for four seasons before being traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2013. Nankivil has played in over 300 NBA games, averaging 8.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

 He has also played for the United States national team, winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics. In 2017, Nankivil signed with Orlandina Basket of the Italian Serie A.

He has so far enjoyed a successful season, averaging 16.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Keaton Nankivil is married and has two children. He is a devout Christian and supports various charities.

Marcus Landry played college basketball for Wisconsin. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 2009 NBA Draft but did not sign with the team. He played for the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons, respectively.

He signed with the Maine Red Claws in the 2011-2012 season. He played for the Reno Bighorns in the 2012-2013 season. He played for the Maratonistas de Coamo in the 2013-2014 season.

 He played for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2014-2015 season. He played for the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2015-2016 season.

He signed with the Houston Rockets in the 2016-2017 season. Marcus Landry was a standout player for the Ohio State Buckeyes and played in the NBA for a number of years. 

He was a member of the Italian League's Brescia Leonessa team in 2018-19 and helped the team make the playoffs. He has also played for the Shanghai Sharks, Reno Bighorns and Sevilla in the K-League.

Landry was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft. He has also played for the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA. 

Landry has also played in the NBA Development League and the NBA G League. He is a two-time Second-team All-Big Ten player and was a member of the 2009 NCAA Championship team.

Landry has also won a number of awards, including the Italian League MVP in 2017. He is currently playing for the Brescia Leonessa team in the Italian League.

Tom Black was an American basketball player who played in the NBA for the Baltimore Bullets. He was born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in 1941. He played college basketball for Wisconsin and South Dakota State.

He was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets in the 1964 NBA draft. He played for the Bullets, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks. He retired from playing in 1985. He later worked as a basketball coach.

He died in September 2017. Tom Black was a center for the Seattle SuperSonics from 1970-71. Black was drafted 12th overall by the Phillips 66ers in the 1964 NBA draft. Black played for the Akron Wingfoots, Seattle SuperSonics and Cincinnati Royals in the NBA.

Black won two first-team All-NCC awards in his career. Black is currently a basketball coach in the UK. Black is the son of former NBA player Tom Black. 

Black has retired from coaching. Black is a member of the British Basketball Hall of Fame. Tom Black was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 9, 1944.

13. John Kotz

John Kotz was born in 1919 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He attended high school in Rhinelander before going on to attend Wisconsin. Kotz played college football for the Wisconsin Badgers from 1940 to 1943.

After graduating from college, Kotz joined the United States Navy during World War II. Kotz returned to the United States after the war and began a career in journalism. Kotz worked for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from 1946 to 1960, the St.

Louis Post-Dispatch from 1960 to 1971, and the Chicago Tribune from 1971 to 1998. Kotz was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 1971 for his work on the Watergate scandal.

 Kotz died on May 8, 1999 at the age of 80. Kotz was a two-time consensus first-team All-American and a three-time NCAA champion with the Sheboygan Red Skins.

Kotz was drafted by the Milwaukee Hawks in the third round of the 1945 NBA Draft and played with the team for three seasons. Kotz then played two seasons with the Rochester Royals before retiring in 1948. 

Kotz then became the head coach of the University of Wisconsin Badgers for six seasons. Kotz was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.

Kotz then became the head coach of the New Orleans Jazz for two seasons before retiring in 1984. Kotz then became the head coach of the St. John's Red Storm for one season before retiring in 1985. 

Kotz then became the head coach of the American University Eagles for one season before retiring in 1986. Kotz then became the head coach of the New York Nets for one season before retiring in 1987.

14. Jordan McCabe

Kurt Portmann was born on December 9, 1967 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Kurt Portmann attended high school in Sheboygan North and played football and basketball.

Kurt Portmann started his career as a linebacker in the NFL for the Chicago Bears in 1992. Kurt Portmann also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins, and Arizona Cardinals.

Kurt Portmann retired from the NFL in 2001. Kurt Portmann currently works as a football analyst for Fox Sports. Kurt Portmann has two children and he is married. Kurt Portmann is a football analyst for Fox Sports and he also coaches football.

Kurt Portmann is also known for his charity work and he has raised over $2 million for various causes. 

Kurt Portmann was a standout center at Wisconsin who went undrafted in the 1990 NBA draft but eventually found success in the CBA. He won two All-Defensive Team honors in the CBA and was named Wisconsin Mr.

Basketball in 1986. Kurt Portmann retired from playing in 2003 after 13 seasons in the CBA and two seasons in the NBA. Kurt Portmann is now a coach and currently works for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Kammron Taylor was born on August 28, 1984, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended North Community High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and played basketball for the school's varsity team.

Taylor played college basketball for Wisconsin from 2003 to 2007. He was not drafted by any NBA teams in 2007, but he did sign a contract with CB L'Hospitalet of the Spanish Liga ACB.

 Taylor played in Spain for two seasons before returning to the United States and joining the Indiana Pacers for the 2008–2009 season. He spent two more seasons with the Pacers before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2012. 

Taylor spent three seasons with the Grizzlies before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2015. He spent one season with the Nets before retiring in 2016. Taylor is currently an assistant coach for the University of Memphis.
