The University of Texas is home to some of the best basketball players of all time. From the legendary sharpshooter, T.J. Ford, to the dominant big man, Kevin Durant, the Longhorns have produced some of the greatest players to ever grace the hardwood.

Not only have these players made their mark in college basketball, but they have also gone on to have successful careers in the NBA. In this article, we will take a look at some of the best basketball players to have ever donned the burnt orange of Texas.

1. Jericho Sims

Jericho Sims attended Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sims played college basketball for the New York Knicks and averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds per game as a junior before being drafted by the team in 2018.

Sims has represented America at various youth levels including the U19 FIBA World Cup where he helped Team USA to a bronze medal finish, and also participated at the 2017 Nike Hoop Summit with fellow NBA prospects Trae Young and Lonzo Ball.

In November 2018, it was announced that Sims had signed a three-year deal with German club Brose Bamberg after playing sparingly for New York during their season in the NBA playoffs (he only appeared in two playoff games). 

As an international player, Jericho is not subject to any NCAA rules which could affect his draft eligibility or potential professional career path should he decide to leave school early .

Jericho Sims was selected by the New York Knicks in the 2021 NBA draft. He is a versatile player who can play both guard positions. 

In his two seasons at Texas, Sims averaged 14 points and six assists per game. Sims has won several awards during his career, including an NIT champion with Westchester in 2019.

Jarrett Allen is a 24-year-old center from San Diego, California. He was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets in 2017 and has since played for them, Toronto Raptors and now Cleveland Cavaliers.

JarrettAllen is known for his high energy play on the court and strong defense. In 2018–19 he averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block per game while playing 39 minutes per contest. Allen will be participating in this year's NBA All Star Game in Cleveland as part of the Eastern Conference team.

Jarrett Allen is a two-time McDonald’s All American and was a third team selection to the 2017 NBA All Star game. Jarrett started his collegiate career at Texas before transferring to Iowa State for his sophomore season where he averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds and 1 block per game. 

He was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets with the 7th overall pick in the 2017 draft and has since played for Cleveland Cavaliers.

Allen is known for his athleticism, strength, rebounding skills and shotblocking ability on both sides of the ball which will be important as he progresses in his young career.

LaMarcus Aldridge is a center and power forward who has spent his entire career with the Portland Trail Blazers. LaMarcus Aldridge was drafted second overall in the 2006 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls but never played for them due to a contract dispute.

He instead joined the Portland Trail Blazers and quickly became one of their most important players, winning an NBA championship in 2015. In 2018, LaMarcus Aldridge announced that he would be leaving Portland at the end of the season to join the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent.

LaMarcus Aldridge is considered one of the best big men in history and will go down as one of basketball's all-time greats LaMarcus Aldridge is a 7-time NBA All-Star and 2x All-NBA Second Team selection. 

He was drafted 3rd overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2007 but only played one season with them before being traded to San Antonio.

In his first year with the Spurs, he led the team in scoring and won his first NBA Championship. LaMarcus has also been a huge part of the Spurs' success over the past few years, helping lead them to back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.

Well as making an appearance in this year's Finals once again. Outside of basketball, LaMarcus is known for his philanthropy work - most notably donating $1 million towards building playgrounds in impoverished areas across Texas.

With two more seasons left on his contract with San Antonio, it looks like we could be seeing some more great things from LaMarcus Aldridge - who will always be remembered as one of the greatest power forwards ever to play the game.

Turner was drafted 11th overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2015 NBA draft. Turner has spent his entire career with the Pacers, playing over 200 games and averaging 14 points and 7 rebounds per game.

He is a two-time All-Star and was named to the 2017 Eastern Conference All-Defensive Second Team. Turner announced his retirement from professional basketball on May 25, 2018 after 18 seasons in the NBA Turner is a 6'8" forward who was the No.

1 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers. Turner led his team to their first-ever playoff appearance in 2018, where they lost to the Toronto Raptors 4 games to 2. 

He has won multiple awards and accolades during his career including being named an All-Rookie Second Team member in 2016 and a blocks leader for both 2019 and 2021 seasons.

D. J. Augustin was a highly touted prospect coming out of high school, and he proved it by leading Texas to the NCAA Championship in 2006. Augustin started his career with Charlotte before being traded to Houston midway through the 2011–12 season.

In 2017, Augustin signed with the Utah Jazz after playing for Orlando and Memphis in previous seasons. After averaging 14 points and 5 assists per game for Utah last season, he is expected to be one of the top free agents this summer. 

At 35 years old, Darnell Jackson may be more likely than not to retire at the end of next season which would open up an opportunity for D-Jou to start from day one on another team next year if interested; however nothing has been confirmed as of yet so we'll just have to wait and see.

D. J. Augustin is a former professional basketball player who has played for the Charlotte Bobcats, Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons and Oklahoma City Thunder in the National Basketball Association (NBA). 

Augustin was born on December 28th 1988 in Fort Myers, Florida to parents Darnell and Patricia. He attended Bishop Moore High School where he was a four-year letter winner for the Knights as both a guard and forward before being drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats with the 15th overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft.

After playing one season with Charlotte, he was traded to Indiana along with Brendan Haywood and Jason Maxiell in exchange for Roy Hibbert and Donald Sloan. 

In his five seasons with Indiana he averaged 8 points 2 assists 3 rebounds per game while shooting 43% from three point range which earned him an All-Star selection in 2013 AND 2014 respectively.

On July 10th 2016 it was announced that Augustin had signed with Denver Nuggets on a 5 year deal worth $80 million dollars which made him their all time leading scorer surpassing Andre Iguodala's record of 27000 points scored within NBA history.

At 21 years old, Kai Jones is one of the youngest players in the NBA. He was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. At 6'11", 222 lbs., he's a power forward/center with potential to be a star player in the league.

Jones attended Orlando Christian Prep and then Brewster Academy before being drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 2016. In his rookie season, Jones averaged 5 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assists per game while shooting 50% from three-point range (41 FGs).

His second season saw him improve statistically as he averaged 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game while also adding 42 FGs for%. 

The third year of his career has been even better so far; Jones is averaging 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists per game on 51% shooting from three-point range thus far this season.

Greg Brown III was born on September 1, 2001 in Dallas, Texas. He is a power forward who played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns in 2020-21. The Blazers selected him with the 43rd overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft and he will join their team shortly thereafter.

Greg Brown III is a 20-year-old forward who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers. He was born in Texas and played high school basketball at Gregory-Portland High School before going on to play college ball at Texas. 

Brown has spent most of his career with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he's been a key player off the bench over the past two seasons.

He's averaged 3 points and 2 rebounds per game during his NBA career so far, but he'll be looking to improve those numbers this season as he looks to continue his development as a player.

Timmy Allen is a small forward from Texas who played in the Big 12 Conference. He was born in 2000 and stands at 6'6", weighing 210 pounds. 

Timmy has starred at Desert Ridge High School, where he averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals per game as a senior in 2018-19.

Allen declared for the 2019 NBA Draft but opted to return to Texas for his sophomore season instead of attending the draft combine or working out for teams personally. In two seasons with Texas, Allen has averaged 14 points and 5 rebounds while shooting 41 percent from three-point range (76-of-205).

Timmy Allen is a redshirt junior guard for the Utah Utes men's basketball team. He played college ball at Utah and was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team in his sophomore season.

 Allen started all 31 games he appeared in during his junior year, averaging 16 points per game while shooting 47 percent from the field and 39 percent from three-point range.

The 6'5" guard transferred to Texas prior to his senior season and helped lead them to their first Final Four appearance since 2003, where they lost to Michigan State 71–65 in the national championship game. 

Allen is a two-time Pac-12 All-Freshman Team selection (2018, 2019) as well as being named Second Team All Big 12 both seasons. He also averaged 17 points per game as a freshman with UTEP before transferring there full time after one year of eligibility remaining due an NCAA rule change that allowed players.

Who left school early without sitting out a year to play immediately upon transferring without having any playing time counted against their original stats or record (Allen had sat out one semester).

Albert Burditt was born on May 15, 1972 in Austin, Texas. He attended high school at Lanier (Austin, Texas). He played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns from 1990 to 1994.

In 1994 Burditt was drafted by the Houston Rockets with the 53rd overall pick and he spent most of his career with them until 2009 when he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. 

Albert is best known for his time with the Rockets where he averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game over a ten-year span before retiring in 2009 due to injury..

Albert has also had stints playing in Spain (Gran Canaria), Mexico (Santeros de Aguada) and Italy (Gigantes de Carolina). After retirement from professional basketball, Albert started working as an assistant coach for his former team, Houston Rockets II of the NBA Development League.

B. J. Tyler was a tough defender in the NBA, and he helped lead Philadelphia to the playoffs twice during his tenure with the team. Tyler also had some successful seasons outside of basketball, including being an entrepreneur and actor.

He announced his retirement from professional basketball following the 2006-07 season, but has since returned to play for various teams around the world. B B Tyler is currently 52nd all time in points scored in NBA history, with 10,471 total over 994 games played.

B. J. Tyler was a standout point guard for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 1994-1995 season, earning third-team All American honors from both AP and UPI. He led his team to a SWC title that year, averaging 21 points per game en route to becoming the league's top player.

After two seasons in the NBA with Philadelphia, he signed as a free agent with Portland in 1997 before moving on to various European teams over the next few years before retiring at age 34 in 2001.

Cory Joseph is a point guard for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA. Joseph was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He played college basketball at Texas before being drafted by the Spurs in 2011.

Cory Joseph has spent his entire playing career with the San Antonio Spurs to date. Cory Joseph is a guard who has played in the NBA for three seasons. Cory Joseph was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 2011 and spent two seasons with them before moving on to Austin Toros of the D-League.

In 2013, he joined Toronto Raptors and had an excellent season, averaging 16 points per game on 44 percent shooting from three-point range en route to being voted into the All-NBA D-League Second Team. 

He then signed with Indiana Pacers for the 2014–15 season but only managed 10 games before being traded to Sacramento Kings midway through the year as part of a larger deal that saw DeMarcus Cousins join Toronto.

Cory Joseph continued his good form in Sacramento and helped lead them to their first playoff appearance since 2006, where they were beaten 4–1 by Golden State Warriors in the First Round (although he averaged just 11 minutes off the bench). 

The following year saw him sign with Detroit Pistons but after appearing sparingly throughout preseason he was waived at midseason and subsequently retired due to injury.

 After retiring from basketball, Cory Joseph enrolled at Stanford University where he plans to study business administration.

Tucker spent six seasons with the Toronto Raptors, helping them reach two Eastern Conference Finals. He was drafted 35th overall by the Raptors in 2006 and has since played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets.

Tucker is a versatile player who can play both forward positions well, contributing on offense with his scoring and rebounding skills as well as being a defensive stalwart down low. 

In 2019 he averaged 18 points per game off the bench for the Houston Rockets in their run to the Western Conference Finals where they lost to eventual champions Golden State Warriors 4-1.

Tucker was one of the best players in the German League during his time there, winning championships and MVP awards. Tucker became an All-Star in Germany while playing for the Phoenix Suns before joining their rivals, the Toronto Raptors, later on in his career. 

Tucker is a versatile player who can play both inside and outside positions well. He has been a regular member of Houston Rockets squads over the past few years but will move to Philadelphia 76ers next season as they look to improve on their 17th place finish last year.

Tucker is known for having a high basketball IQ and being able to pass effectively from either half court or in transition; attributes that have helped him earn accolades such as NBA champion and All-Star selection multiple times throughout his career so far.

Gibson is a two-time All-Star (2011, 2012). After leaving the Cavaliers, Gibson signed with the Memphis Grizzlies but was traded to New Orleans Pelicans before playing a single game for them .

Gibson was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school and played his first two years at the University of Memphis. He was drafted in the third round by the Cleveland Cavaliers and made an immediate impact, starting all 82 games he appeared in as a rookie.

Gibson averaged 11 points per game and 4 rebounds on average during his time with Cleveland. In 2013, Gibson signed with New Orleans Pelicans as a free agent where he has continued to produce offensively (15 ppg) but has also been more consistent defensively (4 apg).

Slater Martin was born on October 22, 1925 in Elmina, Texas. He attended high school in Houston, Texas and then college at Texas. Slater was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1949 and played with them for six seasons.

He is best known for his time with the Lakers, but also played for the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics. Slater retired from playing in 1960 and later worked as a basketball coach. He passed away on October 18, 2012 at the age of 86.

Slater Martin was a legendary coach in the NBA. He won five championships with the New York Knicks and seven All-Star selections.

Mays spent the next two seasons with the Ironi Ramat Gan team before moving to Italy to play for the Tuborg Pilsener team in 1998.

Mays then moved back to the United States to join the Mens Sana 1871 Basket team in 1999. Mays spent two seasons with Mens Sana before returning to the Atlanta Hawks in 2002. 

Mays spent two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks as an assistant coach before joining the Texas Longhorns as associate head coach in 2007. Mays remained with the Texas Longhorns until 2011, when he was hired as the head coach of the LSU Tigers.

Mays remained with the LSU Tigers until 2016, when he was hired as the associate head coach of the SMU Mustangs.

Thomas played for several teams in the NBA, most notably the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers. He also played for the Albany Patroons, Chicago Bulls, and Climamio Bologna in Europe. LaSalle Thompson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 23, 1961. He attended high school in Withrow, Ohio and played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns.

Thompson was drafted fifth overall by the Kansas City Kings in the 1982 NBA draft. He played center for the Kings from 1981 to 1997. Thompson then spent two years as a player/coach with the Italian club Treviso before returning to the NBA as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2008.

Thompson was fired by the 76ers in 2014. He then served as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons from 2015 to 2017. Thompson was hired as the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks in 2018. 

LaSalle Thompson was a standout player at Kansas City and Sacramento, leading the way in both rebounds and blocks during his playing career.

Thompson spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers, before joining the New York Knicks in 2012. He is currently an assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats.

 Thompson is a three-time All-SWC honoree and a two-time NCAA rebounding champion. Thompson was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 1989 NBA draft.

Chris Mihm was a standout center at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 2000 NBA Draft and spent three seasons with the team.

In 2004, he was traded to the Boston Celtics and spent two more seasons with them. Mihm then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2006 and spent two seasons with them. He retired from the NBA in 2009.

Chris Mihm is now a basketball analyst for ESPN. He has two children and lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Chris Mihm is a seven-time NBA All-Star and is the all-time leader in field goals made (2,884). He has been awarded the John W.

McConathy Award, the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, and the NBA Cares Community Assist Award. Chris Mihm was a two-time first-team All-Big 12 player at Kansas and was drafted in the second round of the 2000 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.

In his rookie season, Mihm averaged 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 76 games. He improved his field goal percentage to 42 percent in his second season and became a key player on the Lakers' 2002 championship team. 

Mihm spent the next three seasons with the Lakers, averaging 8.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in 168 games.

He signed with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2007 and played in 65 games before being traded to the Detroit Pistons the next season. Mihm retired after the 2009 season. Mihm has since worked as a basketball analyst for ESPN.

Owens was one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA for most of his career. Owens was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2002 and played for the team until 2015.

Owens was a member of the United States national team in the FIBA World Championship in 2006 and 2010. Owens played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2013-14 season.

Owens signed with the San Antonio Spurs in 2015 and played for the team until 2017. Owens is currently a free agent and has not played in the NBA since 2017. Owens is a two-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2009 and 2011.

J'Covan Brown was born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1990. He attended Memorial High School in Port Arthur and played for the school's basketball team. Brown played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns from 2009 to 2012.

He was not drafted by any NBA team in the 2012 NBA draft and decided to continue his career in Europe. Brown has played for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Israeli Premier League, EuroCup, and the Adriatic League. He has also played for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Summer League.

Brown is currently a member of the Texas Legends in the NBA Development League. Brown is a two-time Israeli Premier League champion and a EuroLeague champion.

Bradley Buckman was born on January 11, 1984 in Austin, Texas. He attended high school at Westlake (West Lake Hills, Texas). He played college basketball for Texas from 2002 to 2006.

He was undrafted in the 2006 NBA draft but was signed by the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League. He played for the Austin Toros and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants before being signed by the Minnesota Timberwolves in March 2010.

He was waived by the Timberwolves in December 2010. He was signed by the Golden State Warriors in March 2011 and played for them until he was waived in February 2014. He has since played for the Philadelphia 76ers, the New Orleans Pelicans, and the Utah Jazz.

43. Raymond Downs

Raymond Downs was a three-year starter for the Texas Longhorns men's basketball team and helped lead the team to a record of 46-18 during his tenure. Downs was a highly-touted player coming out of high school and was considered a top prospect for the University of Texas.

Downs averaged 11.7 points per game during his college career and was a key player on the team that made it to the Final Four in 1957. Downs was drafted by the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors in 1958 but never played in the league. 

After his playing days were over, Downs became a head coach at Southwest Texas State University and later at Austin Community College.

Raymond Downs was inducted into the University of Texas Athletic Hall of Honor in 1998. Raymond Downs passed away in November of 2013 at the age of 80.

Jay Arnette was born on December 19, 1938 in Austin, Texas. Arnette attended high school at McCallum in Austin, Texas and played college basketball for Texas.

Arnette was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in the 1960 NBA draft and played for the team from 1963-1965. Arnette is best known for his time with the Cincinnati Royals, but also played for the Baltimore Bullets, Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks in his career.

Arnette retired from playing in 1965 and has since worked in broadcasting and coaching. He is currently an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. Arnette is a six-time NBA All-Star and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Arnette was a multi-talented player in both college and the NBA.

Arnette was a three-time first-team All-Southwest Conference player and was named SWC Player of the Year in 1960. Arnette played for the Fort Wayne Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring in 1972. 

Arnette was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985. Arnette currently works as an NBA analyst for Fox Sports.

Arnette is the father of current Indiana Pacers player Jaylen Brown. Arnette is a member of the Indiana Pacers Ring of Honor. Arnette is also a member of the American Basketball Hall of Fame. Arnette currently resides in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

John Hargis was born on August 20, 1920, in Nacogdoches, Texas. He attended high school in Nacogdoches and played college basketball for Texas. He was drafted by the NBA in 1947 but did not play in the league.

He later played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). He retired from playing professional basketball in 1951. John Hargis died on January 2, 1986. John Hargis was a standout player for the Anderson Packers in the NBL.

He then played for the Fort Wayne Pistons and Tri-Cities Blackhawks in the 1950s. Hargis was a consensus second-team All-American in 1947 and was a two-time All-SWC selection. 

Hargis played in the NBA for the Fort Wayne Pistons and the Syracuse Nationals. He retired from playing in the NBA in 1961. John Hargis was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984. He died in 2003. John Hargis is a basketball legend.

Dexter Cambridge was born in 1970 in Eleuthera, Bahamas. Dexter attended high school in Nassau, Bahamas, and played college basketball at Lon Morris. Dexter was undrafted in the 1992 NBA draft, but played in the league for six seasons.

He was most notable for his time with the Houston Rockets. Dexter retired from playing in 2001. He currently lives in Houston, Texas. Dexter is a small forward who averaged 16.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in his career. Dexter has been involved in a number of charity work, including work with the Special Olympics.

Dexter was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Houston in 2018. Dexter is married and has two children. Dexter is a member of the Bahamas national basketball team.

Dex then played for the Carolina Gigantes from 1996-1997 and then the Dinamica Gorizia from 1997-1998. Dex then played for the Fabriano Basket from 1998-1999 and then the Obras Sanitarias from 1999-2000. Dex then played for the Miranda Panteras from 2000-2001. 

Dex then played for the San Nicolás Regatas from 2001-2002. Dex then played for the Sanitarias of the Liga ACB from 2002-2003 and the Gran Canaria Basket from 2003-2004.

Dex then played for the Fuenlabrada Basket from 2004-2005 and then the DKV Joventut from 2005-2006. Dex then retired from professional basketball in 2006.

48. Alvin Heggs

Alvin Heggs was born on December 12, 1967 in Jacksonville, Florida. He played college football at the University of Florida. He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft.

He played for the Jaguars for eleven seasons before retiring in 2001. He has since worked as a football commentator for various networks. He married his wife, Kim, in 2001. The couple have four children: A daughter, Kaitlyn, and three sons, Kameron, Kingston, and Kalen.

Heggs is a member of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. He is an avid golfer and has won several tournaments. Alvin Heggs was a prolific scorer in the NBA for a number of years. Heggs was drafted by the Houston Rockets in 1989 but did not make the team. 

Heggs played for the Texas Legends, Utah Jazz, and Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA before retiring in 1995. Heggs was a three-time All-Star and was inducted into the Texas Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. 

Alvin Heggs is currently the head coach of the Trinity Valley Community College men's basketball team. 

Heggs is a very successful coach, having led the Trinity Valley Community College men's team to two NAIA Division II national championships. Alvin Heggs is remembered as one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history.

49. Gabe Muoneke

Gabe Muoneke was born in 1978 in the United States of America. He started playing basketball at an early age, and quickly developed into one of the best players in the country.

Muoneke played for several top American universities before finally settling on Michigan State University, where he played for four years. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the 2001 NBA Draft.

After playing for the Warriors for two seasons, Muoneke was traded to the Chicago Bulls. He spent three seasons with the Bulls, before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2007. Muoneke spent two seasons with Memphis, before being traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2009.

He spent two seasons with the Nuggets, before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2011. Muoneke spent one season with the Bucks, before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013.

Final Words

The University of Texas is home to some of the best basketball players of all time, including Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant.
