Brian Lenihan was the Tánaiste and Minister for Defence in the Charles Haughey government. He also served as Minister for Agriculture from 1982 until his resignation in 1982.

Lenihan was born in 1936 in County Clare, Ireland. Lenihan has been a long-time member of Fianna Fáil and was first elected to the Dáil in 1977. He served as Taoiseach from 1987 until 1990.

Lenihan was a presidential candidate in the 1992 general election but was unsuccessful. He has since served as Chairman of the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation and as a Board Member of AIB.

Lenihan was appointed Tánaiste again in March 2017, in the newly appointed Leo Varadkar government. He has been married to Roisin Lenihan since 1957 and they have four children. Brian Lenihan was the Minister for Finance in the government of Charles Haughey.

He was responsible for steering the country through a financial crisis in the early 1980s. He was also a key player in the scandal surrounding the sale of the Irish Times to Rupert Murdoch. He later served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs. He died in a car crash in 2003.
