John's biggest rivals on tour have generally been Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Australian Roger Federer, but he has also beaten players such as Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka along the way.

In October 2018, he suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out of the remainder of the year's ATP World Tour tournaments, including Wimbledon and US Open; however, he returned in time for the
