He is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of his era, and is also remembered for his scoring record in Serie A – he holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season (42) and in all competitions combined (83).

In 2009, he was named one of the 100 Greatest Footballers of All Time by Pelé International Foundation. Piola died at age 83 after a long illness; he had been retired from professional football since 1964.

Silvio Piola was born on September 29 1913 in Robbio, Italy to Pietro and Maria Piola, both agricultural laborers.

Despite enjoying modest success with local side Veloces 1925 during his early career,[3] it wasn’t until joining Pro Vercelli that he started to make waves –scoring 27 goals over two seasons while helping them reach promotion to Serie A.

Following Pro Vercelli’s relegation at the end of 1928, Piola joined Lazio where he would spend nine hugely successful years playing alongside some illustrious names such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Giorgio Chiellini and Gaetano Scirea amongst others.

The 1934–1943 period saw him score 143 league goals including 43 consecutive matches between October 1933 and May 1934 which remains an Italian League record. After leaving Lazio following their first championship victory in 1943.

It took Juventus just four months to sign him up ahead of their title defense campaign - despite interest from Milan and Roma -and achieve another domestic double later that year against Torino thanks mainly to his 37-goal haul.

At the conclusion of World War II, however, football underwent its first globalization wave with many European players moving abroad for new opportunities. This included big-name Italians such as Giuseppe Meazza, Ferenc Szuszczak, et al.

So unsurprisingly Silvio opted out of retirement at only 32 years old returning briefly to Torino before joining newly promoted Siena whereupon he finished his career 4 seasons later tallying 26 goals while.
