The Pittsburgh Panthers men’s basketball team is one of the most storied college basketball programs in the nation. Founded in 1905, the Panthers have won two National Championships, two Big East Tournament titles, and seven ACC Tournament titles.

The Panthers have also produced several All-Americans and NBA stars, including Charles Smith, Demetrius “Hook” Mitchell, and Sam Clancy. The Panthers have had great success in recent years, including back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances and a third-place finish in the 2020 ACC Tournament.

With a rich history and a bright future, the Pittsburgh Panthers men’s basketball team is primed to continue its tradition of excellence.

Knight was a shooting guard and small forward who played in the NBA for 14 seasons. He averaged over 20 points per season throughout his career, and won two championships with the Lakers in 1980 and 1984.

Knight is also notable for being one of only four players to lead their team in scoring three different times (1977–1978, 1978–1979, 1979–1980). Knight retired from playing after the 1985-86 season.

Continued to work as a commentator and analyst for various sports networks until he died at the age of 70 on June 9th 2018 Billy Knight was a two-time All-Star in the NBA and an ABA all-star.

He led Indiana Pacers to their only NBA championship in 1984, and later won another title with San Antonio Spurs in 1985. Knight also played for CSP Limoges of France during three seasons and helped the team win back-to-back French League championships (1985–1986). 

After retiring from playing basketball, he served as head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers for four seasons (1992–1996). In 2007, he became assistant coach under Rick Majerus at Saint Louis University before joining Tom Izzo's staff at Michigan State University in 2013.

Sam Young was a high school basketball player from Fort Washington, Maryland who attended Pittsburgh. After playing two seasons at Pitt, Young was drafted 36th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2009 NBA draft.

In his four-year career with Memphis and Philadelphia, he averaged 7 points per game while shooting 38% from three-point range. In 2014, Young signed with the Sydney Kings of Australia for one season before retiring due to an injury that same year.

Young is a native of Lebanon and played college basketball at the University of Hartford in Connecticut. He has spent time with several clubs in his career, most notably Al Ahli Dubai and Homenetmen Beirut. 

Young helped lead Al Ahli to victory in the Lebanese Basketball League championship this year, as well as participated on their team that won the Arab Club Championship last year.

He's also had success with club teams internationally, such as winning a FIBA Asia Champions Cup All-Star Five title with Al Naser back in 2016. 

In addition to playing professionally, Young has also been involved with coaching both younger players and squads overseas through various programs he's been part of over the years.

Champagnie is a 21-year old small forward who attended Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn. He was drafted by the New York Knicks with the 36th overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft.

Champagnie has played for three teams in his young career, mainly appearing as a rookie on the Knicks' Summer League squad before being traded to the Phoenix Suns midway through that season.

In 2019/20, Champagnie starred for Team USA at The FIBA U19 World Cup and helped them reach their first final since 2013. After averaging 22 points and six rebounds per game during summer league play. 

it is likely that Champagne will be given an opportunity to feature more prominently for Phoenix next season - particularly if Deandre Ayton remains sidelined due to injury or suspension (which has been reported).

4. Chris Taft

Chris Taft was born on March 10, 1985 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended high school at Xaverian and played college basketball for Pittsburgh before being drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2005.

Chris spent five seasons with the Warriors before joining the Chicago Bulls in 2013 where he continued playing until 2016. In total, Taft has been a part of 11 NBA teams during his career and has averaged 8 points per game over that span.

After ending his professional playing career, Taft currently works as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks' summer league team Taft is a power forward who has played for the Golden State Warriors and Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA.

He was named to the Third-team Parade All-American squad in 2003, and he also won an MVP award while playing with Rio Grande Valley Vipers in 2012. 

Taft has been described as a powerful player with excellent court vision, which makes him an effective scorer off of pick and rolls or short drives to the rim.

Taft is not known for his defense, but he can score inside against most opponents if given enough space to operate. With improved play from both himself and his team this season, there's no reason why Chris Taft cannot have another successful career in basketball.

5. Clyde Vaughan

Clyde Vaughan was a basketball coach and former professional player who enjoyed a distinguished career at college level and professional level. He played for the England national team, winning a bronze medal in the 1984 Olympic Games.

After retiring from playing, he became head coach of several colleges before joining Bristol Academy as an assistant coach in 2009. In 2013, he moved to Durham University where he served as both head coach and general manager until his resignation.

In 2017 due to health reasons Vaughan currently works as a basketball consultant with various clubs around Europe Clyde Vaughan was selected as the 117th pick in 1984 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers but never appeared in the NBA.

He had a successful playing career overseas, most notably with Italian club Benetton Treviso and Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray Ülker. After retiring from professional basketball, Vaughan became an agent and businessman before passing away in 2009 at the age of 52 after a long battle with cancer.

Charles Smith was a power forward who played for the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks in both the NBA and WNBA. Charles Smith had an impressive career, averaging 19 points per game over his nine-year playing career.

Charles Smith is well known for his comedic work which he does as part of cancer awareness campaigns. In addition to his basketball skills, Charles has also achieved success on television with appearances on shows such as The Office and Parks & Recreation.

Charles Smith was a successful player in the NBA for many years. He was known for his scoring and rebounding abilities, as well as his leadership skills on the court. Charles Smith is most notably remembered for his time with the San Antonio Spurs, where he won several awards and accolades.

7. Jeff Capel III

Capel has been a head coach for the past two seasons, first at Duke and then at Pittsburgh. He had an assistant coaching position with the Blue Devils from 2011 to 2013 before being named the head coach of Pitt.

His record as a head coach is 67–76 (.457). Capel played college basketball at Duke, where he was a guard on the 1993–1997 team that reached the NCAA Tournament Final Four. 

After playing professionally in Europe for several years, Capel returned to North Carolina and coached boys’ high school basketball for three years before becoming an assistant coach at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski in 2011.

Capel was promoted to head coach when Krzyzewski left for Ohio State after the 2013 season Capel is a former assistant coach at VCU and Oklahoma. 

He was named the head coach of Pittsburgh in 2018, and he has led the team to three postseason appearances in his four years as head coach. Capel played college basketball at North Carolina, where he was Mr. Basketball in 1993.

Tim O'Toole is currently an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Panthers in the ACC. He played collegiately at Fairfield and was part of their 1985 NCAA Tournament team.

After playing professionally with Fordham, he became an assistant coach at Army before rejoining Pitt in 1988. In his coaching career, Tim has been successful at developing players both on and off the court.

He has helped numerous players reach the NBA including Juwan Howard and Jonny Flynn among others. His work ethic is legendary as he routinely works long hours after games to help prepare his teams for upcoming contests O'Toole is a decorated assistant coach with 10 years of experience at various Division I schools.

He most recently served as an associate head coach at Stanford, where he helped the Cardinal to a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018. 

O'Toole has also been successful as an administrative director, coaching Iona to back-to-back MAAC titles and Syracuse to two conference championships during his time on those campuses.

As one of the top assistants in college basketball, Tim O'Toole should be considered for any head coaching vacancy that arises next season.

9. Brandin Knight

Brandin Knight was an Undrafted Point Guard who played for the Pittsburgh Panthers from 2003-2005. Knight started his coaching career at Seton Hall Prep before being hired by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights as Associate Head Coach in 2014.

Knight is known for his offensive brilliance and was a member of the Panthers’ 2003 NCAA Championship team. Knight is married and has two children. 

Brandin Knight played college basketball at the University of Pittsburgh. After playing two seasons with the Pittsburgh Panthers, Knight was drafted by the Houston Rockets in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Knight played for the Rockets for four seasons before joining the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent in 2009. Knight rejoined the Rockets in 2013 and played for the team until 2016. 

Knight moved to Rutgers in 2016 and has been the team's associate head coach since. In 2018, Knight was named the head coach of the Rutgers men's basketball team.

As the head coach of Rutgers, Knight has led the team to a record of 33-17 in his first two seasons. Knight is a two-time Big East co-Player of the Year and a three-time All-American. 

Knight is a two-time NBA champion, having won the title with the Houston Rockets in 2006 and with the Golden State Warriors in 2019.

Wanamaker was undrafted out of Pittsburgh in the 2011 NBA draft but signed with Teramo of the Italian Serie A. Wanamaker played two seasons with Teramo before signing with Forli of the Italian Serie A.

Wanamaker has spent the majority of his career in Italy, playing with Teramo, Forli, and now Fenerbahçe. 

Wanamaker is a point guard and shooting guard who is known for his strong shooting ability. Wanamaker has been a key player for Fenerbahçe this season, averaging 14.1 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Wanamaker is a three-time EuroLeague champion and two-time Italian League champion with Fenerbahçe. Wanamaker is a member of the United States national team, and he played in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. 

Wanamaker is married and has two children. Wanamaker is a highly respected player in the Italian league, and he is expected to be a key player for Fenerbahçe as they attempt to defend their EuroLeague title.

Jerome Lane was one of the best power forwards of his era, and he was a key player on some of the most successful teams in the NBA. He was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1988, and he played for the team for six seasons before joining the Indiana Pacers in 1992.

He was a three-time All-Star, and he won a championship with the Pacers in 1997. Lane also played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Oximesa Granada in Spain. 

After retiring from basketball, Lane began a successful career as a television commentator. He is currently a color commentator for the Nuggets on their television broadcasts.

Jerome Lane is married and has two children. He is a devout Catholic, and he has been a supporter of various charities over the years. Jerome Lane was a versatile player in the NBA, playing both forward positions. 

He was a two-time All-American and led the Big East in rebounding in 1987. He had a productive NBA career, averaging nearly 16 points and five rebounds per game.

After playing in the NBA for nine seasons, he retired in 2000. He now works as a basketball analyst for ESPN.

Ashton Gibbs played college basketball at Pittsburgh before being drafted by the Utah Jazz in the 2012 NBA draft. In the 2012 NBA draft, Gibbs was undrafted but decided to play in the NBA Development League (NBA D-League) for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

Gibbs signed with the Houston Rockets in 2013 but was waived just a few months later. In 2014, Gibbs signed with the Brooklyn Nets but was waived again. 

Gibbs then signed with the Phoenix Suns but was waived again in September. Gibbs then signed with the Orlando Magic but was waived again in December.

Gibbs then signed with the Philadelphia 76ers but was waived again in February. In March, Gibbs signed with the Brooklyn Nets but was waived again in April. Gibbs then signed with the Memphis Grizzlies but was waived again in July.

Gilbert Brown played college basketball for the Pittsburgh Panthers from 2006 to 2011. He was undrafted in the 2011 NBA Draft but signed with Hapoel Eilat of the Israeli Premier League.

Brown has averaged 8.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in his career. Brown is a small forward and is considered a versatile player. Brown has made an impact on the Israeli Premier League and is considered one of the league's top players.

Brown is a two-time Israeli Premier League champion with Hapoel Eilat. Brown has been a key player for the team and is considered one of the most important players on the team. Brown has been a part of the team since the beginning of the 2011–12 season.

Brown is a versatile player and has been able to contribute on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

DeJuan Blair was a highly touted power forward prospect coming out of high school and he made good on that promise in the NCAA. Blair was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 2009 and he spent four seasons with the team before being traded to the Miami Heat in 2015.
