Fargo native Tom Hoge will have a memorable experience at his first Masters tournament this week. He will tee off with one of the most popular and unpredictable players in golf history: Phil Mickelson.
Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion and six-time major winner, is known for his aggressive and creative style of play, as well as his charismatic and sometimes controversial personality. He has been called a “nutbag” by fellow golfer Paul Azinger, who meant it as a compliment.
Hoge, who qualified for the Masters by finishing in the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings last season, said he is looking forward to playing with Mickelson in the first two rounds at Augusta National.
“I’m excited. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Hoge said. “He’s obviously one of the best players ever and one of the best players at Augusta. He’s always entertaining to watch and I’m sure he’ll be entertaining to play with.”
Hoge said he has met Mickelson a few times on the PGA Tour, but has never played with him in a tournament. He said he admires Mickelson’s skill and passion for the game.
“He’s always trying to find ways to get better and to challenge himself,” Hoge said. “He’s not afraid to take risks and go for shots that most people wouldn’t even think of. He’s also very engaging with the fans and the media. He’s a great ambassador for golf.”
Hoge said he hopes to learn from Mickelson and enjoy the atmosphere of the Masters, which is considered one of the most prestigious and tradition-rich events in sports.
“It’s a dream come true to play in the Masters,” Hoge said. “It’s something I’ve watched since I was a kid and always wanted to be a part of. It’s going to be an amazing experience and I’m going to try to soak it all in.”
Hoge and Mickelson will tee off at 10:42 a.m. ET on Thursday and at 1:48 p.m. ET on Friday. They will be joined by Jason Kokrak, who won his first PGA Tour title last year at the CJ Cup.
