The Michigan State Spartans basketball team is one of the most storied and successful programs in college basketball. With over 25 conference championships, 11 Final Four appearances and 2 national titles, there’s no denying the success that runs deep in East Lansing.

Over its illustrious history, MSU has produced some of the greatest players to ever play on a court with Magic Johnson, Steve Smith and Draymond Green just being three of them.

Smith is a shooting guard who played in the NBA for over 20 years. Smith was drafted fifth overall by the Miami Heat in the 1991 NBA Draft. In his first two seasons with Miami, he helped lead them to two championship titles (1993 and 1994).

After leaving Miami, Smith spent three years with Atlanta before moving on to Portland and San Antonio. He retired from professional basketball in 2005 after playing for the Spurs once again during the 2002–03 season. 

Steve Smith currently works as an analyst for Turner Sports' coverage of college basketball games on the TNT channel Steve Smith was a versatile player who excelled at both scoring and assists.

He played for four teams in his 14-year career but is most remembered for playing with the Charlotte Bobcats. Smith won an NBA championship with the New Orleans Hornets in 2003 and also made five All-Star appearances during his lengthy career. 

He retired from playing in 2013 after spending time with the Miami Heat, where he helped lead them to two championships (2013, 2016).

Scott Skiles was a point guard who played in the NBA for 16 seasons. He first joined the Milwaukee Bucks in 1996 and stayed with them until 2016. His best years as a player were with the Orlando Magic, where he won two championships in 1995 and 1999.

After leaving the Magic, Skiles spent time coaching various teams before joining the Bucks again as an assistant coach in 2017. Skiles is a former NBA coach and player who played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, Washington Bullets, Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns.

Skiles was an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns from 1999 to 2002 before becoming head coach of the Chicago Bulls in 2003. He led Chicago to four consecutive playoff appearances but was fired midway through his fourth season.

After falling out with then-owner Jerry Reinsdorf In 2007 Skiles returned to coaching as he was appointed head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks where he stayed until being sacked in 2013.

He rejoined Orlando Magic as their new head coach later that year and during his two seasons at the helm led them to back-to-back playoff appearances On June 30th, 2016. It was announced that Skiles had been relieved of his duties by Orlando Magic owner Rich DeVos following a disappointing start to the 2016–17 season.

Gary Harris was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2014 and spent four years with them before signing with the Orlando Magic in 2022. Gary Harris is a shooting guard who averaged 16 points per game during his time at Michigan State, making him an effective scorer both at the college level and in the NBA.

Gary Harris has excellent ball-handling skills which allow him to create shots for himself or else get open off of passes from teammates. His 6'4" frame makes it difficult for defenders to contest his shots, no matter how well they are defended, and this allows him to score easily from anywhere on the floor.

Harris is also known for being a very good defender; he consistently ranks among the best players at guarding multiple positions across all leagues he's played in thus far career-wise.

Draymond Green was born on March 4, 1990, in Saginaw, Michigan. He played college basketball at Michigan State and became a two-time All-American. Green was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2012 and has since played for them throughout his career.

His standout moments during his playing career include winning an NBA championship with the Warriors in 2018 and being named Defensive Player of the Year in the 2017/2018 season. Draymond is married to Channing Tatum and they have one child together - a son name Zaire Jackson Tatum Jr.

Green is a four-time NBA champion and four-time All-Star. He was named the 2017 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming just the second player in league history to win both awards in the same season (the other being Kawhi Leonard). 

Green also ranks first all-time in steals at Michigan State with 353 career thefts. In 2018, he became just the third player ever to achieve both an MVP and Finals MVP award in their respective careers (joining Michael Jordan and LeBron James). 

On October 14, 2018, Green was suspended for three games after throwing a punch at Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert during Game 4 of their playoff series; this led to him being ejected from that game as well.

Born on May 28th, 1988 in Saginaw, Michigan, Draymond has played his entire eight-year professional career with the Golden State Warriors where he currently holds averages of 23 points per game, 10 rebounds per game, and two assists per game over 538 regular season minutes.

5. Jason Richardson

Richardson was drafted fifth overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2001. He played with the Warriors for six seasons before joining the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007.

Richardson has averaged 14.1 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game throughout his career. 

In June 2015, Richardson announced his retirement from professional basketball after 16 seasons in the NBA Richardson was one of the most versatile players in the NBA for many years, able to contribute offensively from all over the court.

He won two slam dunk contests and was a consensus Second-Team All-American in 2001. Richardson also excelled at shooting threes, making more than half of his three-point attempts during his career (596). 

After playing for six different teams across four seasons, Richardson retired after the 2015–16 season with 14,644 points and 4,245 rebounds accumulated in 703 games played.

Ralph Simpson was a shooting guard and small forward who played for the Chicago Bulls from 1970 to 1979. He averaged 14 points per game during his career, making him one of the team's most important players.

Simpson also had a prolific 3-point shooting ability, earning him the nickname "Mr. Three-Pointers." After playing in both the ABA and NBA, he retired from professional basketball in 1979. Ralph Simpson is now 73 years old and lives in Detroit with his wife Jackie and their two children.

Ralph Simpson was a standout player in the ABA and NBA, playing for six different teams over 19 seasons. He was an All-Star in five of those seasons and won two Second Team All-ABA honors. Simpson also played one season with the Philadelphia 76ers before coaching Metro State to NABC Tournament championship in 1985.

After retiring from basketball, Simpson became a successful businessman and philanthropist.

Jaren Jackson Jr. is a power forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, who was drafted 4th overall in 2018. As a collegian at Michigan State, Jackson averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per game while shooting 52% from the field and 80% from the free throw line.

He has already made an impact in his rookie season with averages of 14 points and 6 rebounds per game playing 30 minutes per contest off the bench for Memphis. At just 23 years old, there's plenty of room for growth still for Jaren Jackson Jr., who is expected to be one of the stars of this NBA season and beyond.

Selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with their first-round pick in 2018, Jaren Jackson Jr. has quickly become one of the most promising young players in the NBA. 

Averaging 16 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks per game this season, Jackson is already a standout defender and potential All-Star candidate. 

With his high basketball IQ and athleticism, there's no doubt that Jackson will continue to develop into an elite player both on and off the court for years to come.

Tillman is a promising power forward and center for the Memphis Grizzlies. Tillman was drafted by Memphis as the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft.

Tillman led Grand Rapids Christian to back-to-back state championships as a senior in 2018 and 2019. Tillman has averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block per game throughout his career thus far in the NCAA Division I college basketball ranks.

Tillman will look to translate that success at the professional level when he joins up with Memphis next season Tillman was selected 35th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. Tillman played college basketball for Michigan State and led the team in blocks per game in his junior and senior seasons.

Tillman has appeared in 73 games over two seasons with Memphis, averaging 5 points and 2 rebounds per game. Willis was a prolific scorer in the NBA, averaging over 20 points per game for most of his career. He played center and power forward during his time in the league, and is perhaps best known for his time with the Atlanta Hawks.

Willis retired from playing in 2005 after 10 seasons, but continues to work as an analyst for Turner Broadcasting systems. Willis was a key player on the Atlanta Hawks teams that won three championships in the 1990s. He is best known for his defense and rebounding, which helped him win several All-Star and All-NBA honors.

In 2002, Willis signed with the San Antonio Spurs and helped them to an NBA Finals appearance before retiring in 2004. 

After retirement, Willis worked as an analyst for ESPN's coverage of the NBA playoffs until he retired again in 2007 at age 43 due to health concerns stemming from injuries sustained during his playing career.

Eric Snow was a point guard for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1995 to 2008. He helped lead the Bucks to four playoff appearances and one Eastern Conference Finals appearance during his tenure with the team.

After playing in Russia, China, Turkey and Italy over the course of his career, Snow has since retired as a player and currently coaches young players in his hometown of Canton, Ohio. Eric Snow was a key player on the Seattle SuperSonics teams that made it to the NBA Finals in 1995 and 1998.

He then played for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1998-2004 before moving onto Cleveland Cavaliers where he retired in 2008. As coach, Snow has been with SMU since 2012 as director of player development and assistant at Florida Atlantic from 2014-2016. In 2017, he joined Texas Legends as an assistant coach under Rick Majerus.

11. Miles Bridges

Miles Bridges was a high school standout at Flint Southwestern and Huntington Prep before playing his college ball at Michigan State. 

After two years with the Spartans, Bridges declared himself eligible for the 2018 NBA Draft where he was selected 13th overall by Charlotte Hornets.

As a rookie with the Hornets in 2018–19, Bridges averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds per game while appearing in all 82 games of the season. 

In 2019–20, Bridges started all 78 games he appeared in for Charlotte averaging 17 points and 7 rebounds per game as they secured their first playoff berth since 2004.

Miles Bridges was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of this year's draft. The 19-year-old forward is a consensus second-team All-American and first-team All-Big Ten player from 2018. 

He scored 16 points on 7 of 10 shooting with eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in his collegiate debut against Temple University on November 12th.

Bridges has been impressive both at Michigan State and during summer league play for the LA Clippers so far this season; scoring 20 points on 11/14 shooting (5of 8 from three) with six rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block in 33 minutes against Philadelphia 76ers last week.

12. Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson was one of the most successful basketball players in history. He was drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Lakers and played for them from 1979 to 1991.

Magic then spent two seasons with the Magic M7 Borås before returning to the NBA with the Lakers again. In 1996, he became head coach of the LA Clippers and led them to their only playoff appearance during his tenure as coach.

After leaving coaching, Magic returned to play for one final season with the Lakers in 2018-19 before retiring at age 70 years old later that year. Magic Johnson was an iconic figure in the world of basketball and is considered one of the greatest players to ever play the game.

He won five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as three MVP awards and twelve All-Star appearances. After retiring from playing basketball, Magic took on a number of roles within the league - most notably being head coach for both the Lakers and then later, the LA Clippers.

He also served as president of Basketball Operations for both teams. In 2019, Magic was named NBA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and his No 32 jersey was retired by his former team, the LA Lakers.

Shannon Brown was a key player for the Cleveland Cavaliers during his time in the NBA. He started out as a shooting guard and played alongside some of the league's best players, including LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.

After three seasons with the Cavs, Brown was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2013. There he teamed up with Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash on one of the most successful teams in franchise history. In 2018, Brown decided to retire from professional basketball after playing 13 years in the league.

He remains active off-court as an entrepreneur and investor. Shannon Brown was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2008 and played there until he was traded to the Iowa Energy in 2009. 

The Lakers acquired Shannon Brown in 2011 and he spent three seasons with them before being traded to Phoenix, where he won a championship in 2013.

After winning a title with Phoenix, Shannon Brown signed with San Antonio for two more seasons before joining the Knicks as a free agent that year. 

In 2018 Shannon Brown rejoined Milwaukee on a one-year deal and is currently playing for their G League affiliate Delaware 87ers while also serving as an assistant coach under Jason Kidd at Wisconsin Herd basketball team.

Maurice Ager was born on February 9, 1984 in Detroit, Michigan. As a high school student at Crockett (Detroit, Michigan), Maurice Ager averaged 22 points per game and won three state championships.

After graduating from high school in 2002, Maurice went to play college basketball for the Spartans of Michigan State University where he averaged 18 points per game over his four-year career there.

In 2006, Maurice was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks with their first round pick (28th overall) and played for them until 2010 when he was traded to Memphis Grizzlies along with Wayne Ellington and Quincy Pondexter for Rudy Gay and Eddy Curry.

During his NBA career, Maurice shot an impressive 43 percent from 3-point range which made him one of the most deadly shooters in the league during that time period. 

He also excelled as a defender – averaging 1 steal and 2 blocks per game throughout his entire career despite playing shooting guard instead of point guard or center.

Davis was born in Rochester, Michigan and attended high school there. He played college basketball at Michigan State before being drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2006.

Davis played for the Clippers from 2006 to 2016, averaging 10 points and 6 rebounds per game over that time period. In March of 2017, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies as a free agent.

Davis has also appeared in several NBA playoff games, most notably during their run to the 2014 Western Conference Finals where they were eventually defeated by Golden State Warriors 3-1 series lead).

Paul is currently playing for Memphis Grizzlies Paul Davis was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2006. He played for the Washington Wizards from 2009-2010, and then spent four seasons with Spanish club Xacobeo Blu:Sens before signing with Khimki of Russia in 2016.

Cleaves was a point guard for the Detroit Pistons from 2000 to 2009. He averaged 12.3 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds per game in his career. Cleaves won two championships with the Pistons (2004–05, 2008).

In 2006, he signed with the Seattle SuperSonics but did not play much due to injury. Cleaves has also played for Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks in his career as well as Spanish team Real Madrid CIBACAF during the 2007-08 season.

Shawn is currently a coach in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves. As a player, he averaged 13 points per game and 3 assists over his career. Shawn Respert played college basketball for Michigan State.

Respert was a three-time consensus first-team All-American and won the National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year award in 1995. 

He was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the ninth overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft, but he only spent one season with them before being traded to Phoenix Suns where he played until 2000.

In 2013, Shawn became an assistant coach for Memphis Grizzlies under Lionel Hollins and helped them make it to their first playoff appearance since 2004 that led him to be offered a contract extension which he declined citing family reasons.

Vincent was a four-time All-Star and two-time champion with the Dallas Mavericks. Vincent was drafted in the 1981 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks and played with them for six seasons.

In 1987, he was traded to the Washington Bullets, where he would win two championships. He then played for the Denver Nuggets for two seasons before joining the San Antonio Spurs in 1989.

Max Christie is a 19-year-old shooting guard from Arlington Heights, Illinois. He played college basketball for Michigan State from 2021 to 2022 and was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2022 NBA draft.

As a rookie for the Lakers in 2022–23, he averaged 2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game.

Kalin Lucas is a point guard who played collegiately at Michigan State. Lucas has played in the NBA Development League and in Europe. He was drafted in the 2011 NBA draft but did not sign with an NBA team.

Lucas is currently a player for Olympiacos in Greece. Lucas is a three-time All-Mid-American Conference selection. He has also been named an All-American by the Associated Press and the USBWA. Lucas was born in Detroit and attended St.

Mary's Prep. He played college basketball for Michigan State. Lucas has won numerous awards, including All-American and MVP honors. Kalin Lucas is a 6-foot-9, 265-pound power forward who starred at Michigan State and was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Lucas played in three seasons with the Bucks before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2013. Injuries limited Lucas to just 47 games in four seasons with the Cavaliers and he was waived in 2015. 

Lucas signed with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2016 and played in 44 games, averaging 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Johnny Green was an American power forward who played in the NBA for the New York Knicks from 1959 to 1973. Green was a two-time All-Star and helped the Knicks win the NBA championship in 1970.

He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team three times. Green was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1933 and attended high school in Dunbar. He played college basketball for Michigan State and was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1959 NBA draft.

Green played for the Knicks for 13 seasons and was a key part of their championship teams in 1970 and 1973. He retired from the NBA in 1973 and later played in Europe. Green is currently a commentator for the Knicks on MSG Network. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.

Johnny Green was one of the most versatile players in the history of the NBA. He was a capable scorer and rebounder, as well as a strong passer. Green helped lead the Baltimore Bullets to an NBA championship in 1965, and he also won a gold medal with the United States Men’s Olympic Team in the 1964 Summer Olympics.

After leaving the NBA, Green played in the American Basketball Association and the National Professional Basketball League. He retired in 1973. Terry Furlow was born on October 18, 1954 in Flint, Michigan. He attended Flint Northern High School and played college basketball at Michigan State. Furlow was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1976 NBA draft and spent four seasons with the team.

In 1980, Furlow was killed in a car accident. He was 25 years old. Terry Furlow was a standout player at the University of Memphis, where he led the Tigers to the Final Four in 1976. Furlow was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the third round of the 1976 NBA draft.

Furlow played for the 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, and Utah Jazz over the course of his career. Furlow was a third-team All-American and two-time All-NBA selection. Furlow is most known for his time with the 76ers, where he helped lead the team to the Finals in 1980.

Aaron Henry is a small forward from Louisville, Kentucky and played college basketball for Michigan State. In his first season with Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A, Henry averaged 14.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

Feick retired from the NBA in 2001. Feick has since worked as a basketball coach and commentator. He married his wife, Jaclyn, in 2009. Feick has three children. Feick is now a basketball coach at his alma mater, Lexington High School.

Mike Peplowski played basketball for De La Salle High School in Warren, Michigan. After college, Peplowski was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 1993 NBA draft.

He played two seasons with the Kings before being traded to the Detroit Pistons. In 1995, Peplowski moved to FC Barcelona. He finished his playing career in 1996 with the Pistons.

Peplowski has since worked as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings. He was inducted into the Detroit Pistons Hall of Fame in 2016. Peplowski is married with two children. In 2018, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery.

Peplowski played college ball at Long Beach State, making an immediate impact as a freshman. He was drafted in the first round of the 1995 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets, and became a fixture on their team for six seasons. He was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1999, and played with them until 2003.

He then signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, and played for them until 2006. Peplowski then retired from professional basketball, spending the next several years working as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks. 

He was named head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks' Developmental League team in 2018. He has also served as an assistant coach with the University of Wisconsin, and spent a year as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic.

Peplowski was inducted into the Long Beach State Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He is married, and has two children.

38. Horace Walker

Horace Walker was a highly successful player in the NBA, winning three championships with the Boston Celtics. Walker was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1937.

He attended high school in Chester and then played college basketball at Michigan State. Walker was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 1960 NBA draft and spent his entire career with the team.

He won three championships with Boston, in 1964, 1965, and 1966. Walker retired from the NBA in 1971 and later played in the ABA and in Europe. He died in 2001 at the age of 64. Walker was a very tall and strong player who was able to score points in a variety of ways.

He was a key member of the Boston Celtics teams that won three championships in the 1960s. Horace Walker was a small forward for the St. Louis Hawks during the 1960s. 

He was selected by the Hawks in the second round of the 1961 NBA Draft. Walker played for the Denver-Chicago Trucking and the Chicago Packers during the 1961–1962 season.

He then played for the Trenton Colonials for the 1962–1963 season. Walker was a third-team All-American for the Associated Press and United Press International in 1960. 

He also won a gold medal with the United States Men's Olympic Basketball Team at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Walker averaged 14.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game during his career.

Walker is most remembered for his performance in the 1964 NBA Playoffs. He led the Hawks to the Eastern Division Finals, where they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers. Walker died in 2007 at the age of 69.

Matt Steigenga was a prolific scorer in the NBA, averaging 18.7 points per game over his career. Steigenga was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1992 NBA draft, and played for the team until 2000.

Steigenga is most known for his time with the Chicago Bulls, where he was a key contributor on several playoff-bound teams. Steigenga is currently a color commentator for the Milwaukee Bucks, and has also worked as a basketball coach.

Steigenga has also won a gold medal with the United States Men’s National Basketball Team at the Pan American Games in 1999.

Steigenga is currently the head coach of the American University Eagles. Matt Steigenga is a two-time All-American and a two-time NCAA champion.

Payne was selected 15th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. Payne played for the Atlanta Hawks from 2014-2015. Payne then played for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in 2015-2018.

Payne was traded to the Orlando Magic in 2018. Payne died from a heart attack on May 9, 2022. Adreian Payne was an All-American Player at the University of Michigan and went on to play in the NBA for six seasons.

Payne is most known for his tenacious play on the defensive end and his ability to score from all over the court. Payne was a key player for the Minnesota Timberwolves during their run to the Western Conference Finals in 2015.

Payne was traded to the Orlando Magic in 2017 and helped them make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Payne was traded to the Lakeland Magic in 2018 and led them to the playoffs. Payne signed with Panathinaikos in 2018 and helped them win the Greek Cup.

Raymar Morgan was born on August 8, 1988 in Canton, Ohio. Morgan played college basketball at Michigan State and was undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft. Morgan has played in the Israeli, Turkish, and German leagues.

Morgan joined the BG Göttingen roster in the 2014-2015 season. Morgan was released by BG Göttingen in January of the 2016-2017 season. Morgan signed with Maccabi Rishon LeZion in the Israeli League. Morgan won the Israeli League championship with Maccabi Rishon LeZion in the 2017-2018 season.

Morgan signed with the Atlanta Hawks in the 2018-2019 season. Morgan is currently a power forward/center for the Atlanta Hawks. Morgan was a prolific scorer in the BBL for both Panathinaikos and Tofaş in the past two seasons and is likely to be a key player for Galatasaray next season.

He averaged 23.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game as a senior. Hauser was a three-star recruit and was considered one of the top power forwards in his class. He chose Michigan State over offers from Kentucky, Purdue, and Wisconsin.

Hauser made his debut for the Michigan State Spartans during the 2017–18 season. He played in 24 games, averaging 6.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. Hauser played in all 33 games for the Michigan State Spartans during the 2018–19 season.
