Rafael Nadal by playing more semi finals etc than them due to tougher opponents being given main draw entry into slams earlier on their careers making it harder for them to clinch a maiden grand slam title later down the line unlike Rafa.

Where he almost always plays against guys who have already won lots of titles so they are not completely fresh going into each match whereas many times players like Roddick or Ferrer were given lower seeded entries allowing them much fresher legs come crunch time.

Thus meaning these lesser known players would often put up better performances against top players knowing they had nothing to lose while those ranked higher might feel pressure from winning their 4th or 5th major championship.

if they lost even though they may be considered favorites heading into any given match against one of these veterans.
