Lee from 1972 to 1988. At the school, he coached Butler and NFL star Edgar Bennett. Rogers also coached at The Bolles School in Jacksonville from 1989 to 2016, winning eight football State Championships.

Before joining Florida State, Butler was a remarkable player for the Robert E. Lee High School Generals football team. He had an impressive high school career under Rogers’ mentorship.

College career

LeRoy Butler had an impressive college career at Florida State University, where he played under head coach Bobby Bowden. As a three-year starter, Butler recorded 194 tackles and 9 interceptions, showcasing his talent and skill as a defensive player.

FSU was backed up to their 21-yard line on fourth down. Under pressure, Bowden called for a fake punt, which Butler executed flawlessly. The snap went to upback Dayne Williams, who handed the ball off to Butler.

He then ran 78 yards to set up the game-winning field goal, securing FSU’s victory. Despite Butler’s many accomplishments, it was the “puntrooskie” play that solidified his legacy in FSU football history.

Today, Butler’s football career is celebrated not only for his talent as a player but also for his ingenuity and quick thinking during that game.
