The Indiana State Sycamores baseball team is a proud and storied program, boasting an impressive record of success over the past century. Founded in 1896, the Sycamores have gone on to produce 26 Major Leaguers and 12 All-Americans, as well as numerous conference championships under their belt since joining NCAA Division I play in 1977.

With its long history of winning records and talented players from across the country, ISU continues to be one of college baseball’s top programs today.

1. Andy Young

Andy Young

Andy Young was born and raised in West Fargo, North Dakota. Young was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 2nd round of the 2012 MLB Draft. After spending two seasons with the Indians, Young was traded to the Atlanta Braves in July 2014.

Young spent the next two seasons with the Braves, before being traded to the Atlanta D-backs in December 2016. Young spent the 2017 season with the Peoria Chiefs of the Pacific Coast League. 

Young is a free agent and is currently un-signed. Young is an infielder and has played both shortstop and second base in his career.

Young is a consistent performer at the plate, with a batting average of .255 over the course of his career. Young is also a reliable defender, with a fielding percentage of .988 over the course of his career.

2. Colin Rea

Colin Rea

Colin Rea was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 2012 MLB amateur draft. He made his professional debut with the Red Sox' Short Season-A affiliate, the Greenville Drive, in 2014.

He was traded to the Seattle Mariners in December of 2016. He made his Mariners' debut in July of 2017. He was traded to the Indiana State Sycamores in May of 2019. He was named to the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball All-Star Team.

He is a left-handed pitcher. He has a 2.93 ERA in 116.1 innings pitched in the MLB. He was named to the 2019 All-Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Team. 

Colin Rea is a left-handed pitcher who was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 2012 MLB amateur draft.

He made his professional debut with the Red Sox' Short Season-A affiliate, the Greenville Drive, in 2014. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners in December of 2016. 

He made his Mariners' debut in July of 2017. He was traded to the Indiana State Sycamores in May of 2019. He was named to the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball All-Star Team.

3. Jake Petricka

Jake Petricka

Jake Petricka is a free agent pitcher who has enjoyed success in the majors with the Chicago White Sox. Petricka was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round of the 2004 amateur draft.

He made his major league debut with the White Sox in 2012. Petricka has a career record of 43-41, with a 3.85 ERA in 186 games. He has struck out 511 batters in 717.1 innings. Petricka is known for his strong command of his fastball and his ability to miss bats.

He is also known for his durability, having started at least 154 games in each of the past six seasons. Petricka is a potential free agent at the end of the 2018 season. If he does not reach a contract agreement with the White Sox before then, he will become a free agent.

Petricka is married and has two young children. He is a Minnesota Vikings fan. Petricka is a potential candidate for the Hall of Fame. 

He has been nominated for the National League Cy Young Award twice, and has been selected to the All-Star team twice. Petricka is a self-described "athletic guy" who enjoys playing basketball and golf.

4. Clint Barmes

Clint Barmes was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2nd round of the 1999 MLB draft. Barmes made his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2002. 

Barmes has played for the Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners.

In 2012, Barmes was with the Pirates when they won the World Series. Barmes is a two-time All-Star and has had success in the postseason. 

Clint Barmes is a switch hitter who bats right-handed and throws right-handed. Barmes is a respected clubhouse leader and a fan favorite.

Clint Barmes is married and has two children. Clint Barmes is a two-time Gold Glove winner. Clint Barmes started his MLB career in 2003 with the Colorado Rockies. 

Barmes played for the Houston Astros from 2011 to 2014 before signing with the San Diego Padres in 2015. Barmes is a right-handed hitter who primarily bats left-handed.

He has played in over 1,000 games in his MLB career, and has a batting average of .245 with 89 home runs and 415 RBI. Barmes is a durable player, having played in over 150 games in each of the past three seasons. 

He is a good fielder, having made over 1,000 combined ground and outfield appearances in his MLB career. Barmes has played in three MLB All-Star Games.

He is a two-time Gold Glove winner. Clint Barmes is a fan favorite in San Diego, and is often seen at games cheering on the Padres.

Hayes was a catcher in the MLB for the Chicago Cubs from 1980-1981. Hayes was a first base coach for the San Francisco Giants in 2015. Hayes is a three-time All-Star and was a Gold Glover in 1984.

Hayes played for the Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, and Chicago White Sox. 

Hayes has been a coach in the MLB for the Oakland A's, Tampa Bay Rays, and San Francisco Giants. Hayes is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Hayes and his wife, Julie, have three children. Hayes is a resident of Catonsville, Maryland. Hayes is a broadcaster for the Baltimore Orioles. Hayes was a three-time World Series champion as a player with the Chicago Cubs in 1980-1981 and the Colorado Rockies in 1998-2003.

Hayes also served as a coach for the Colorado Rockies from 2003-2016. Hayes' coaching highlights include winning the National League West in 2003 and reaching the playoffs in 2004, 2006, and 2007. 

Hayes is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Hayes was born on January 26, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois.

6. Brian Dorsett

Brian Dorsett

Brian Dorsett is a former major league catcher. He played for the Cleveland Indians from 1987 to 1997. Dorsett was a part of the Indians' World Series-winning team in 1995.

He is a career .265 hitter with 92 home runs and 471 RBI in 1,278 games. Dorsett is a two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove Award winner. Dorsett retired from baseball in 1998.

He has since pursued a career in broadcasting. Dorsett is married and has three children. He is currently a broadcaster for the Texas Rangers. Dorsett is a member of the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.

Dorsett is currently a color commentator for the Texas Rangers' television broadcasts. Brian Dorsett is best known for his tenure with the Chicago Cubs. In 1996, he led the team with 51 RBIs and hit .224 with 9 home runs.

Dorsett also played for the Cleveland Indians and California Angels during his career. He was a key player on both teams, helping them win several championships. After his time with the Cubs, Dorsett played for the Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres.

He retired from baseball in 2001. Dorsett is a three-time All-Star and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2009. He is currently an analyst for the Texas Rangers. Brian Dorsett is one of the most successful hitters in baseball history and is still playing at a high level.

He is a fan favorite and always brings excitement to the game. He is a role model to young players and is always willing to share his knowledge and experience with them. 

Brian Dorsett is a beloved member of the baseball community and will always be remembered for his achievements on the field.

He is a respected member of the media and is always willing to share his thoughts on the game.

7. Jeff James

Jeff James was a pitcher in the MLB for the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Indians. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985. Jeff James had a record of 216-171 with a 3.00 ERA in his career.

He was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2003 and died from the disease in 2006. Jeff James is a member of the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame. 

Jeff James made his MLB debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1968 and would go on to have a 6-6 record with 4.52 ERA in 1471⁄3 innings pitched.

Jeff James was a reliever for most of his career, but he did get a chance to start in 1969. After his MLB career, Jeff James became a coach for the Phillies and eventually managed the team from 2001 to 2003. 

Jeff James was inducted into the Phillies Hall of Fame in 2007. Jeff James passed away in 2018 at the age of 80.

8. Danny Lazar

Danny Lazar was born in East Chicago, Indiana on November 14, 1943. Lazar began his professional career in the minors with the Baltimore Orioles in 1965.

Lazar made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1965. Lazar spent most of his career with the Baltimore Orioles, pitching in parts of eleven seasons.

Lazar was traded to the Montreal Expos in 1974. Lazar spent four seasons with the Montreal Expos, pitching in parts of two seasons. Lazar was traded to the Texas Rangers in 1981.

Lazar spent two seasons with the Texas Rangers, pitching in parts of one season. Lazar was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1984. Lazar finished his career with the Boston Red Sox, pitching in parts of three seasons.

Lazar finished his career with a record of 124-118, with a 3.94 ERA.

9. Zane Smith

Zane Smith is a former pitcher who played for the Atlanta Braves. Smith was born in 1960 in Madison, Wisconsin. Smith had a successful MLB career, playing for the Braves from 1984 to 1998.

Smith was known for his strong fastball and excellent control. Smith retired from MLB in 1998. He later worked as a pitching coach for the Braves and other teams. Smith is now a pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Smith has two daughters, one of whom is also a pitcher. Smith is a popular figure in baseball, known for his work as a pitching coach. Smith was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 1990 MLB Draft.

In 1996, Smith had his best season as a Pirate, posting a record of 100–115 and an ERA of 3.74. Smith was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1995, and then to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1996. Smith finished his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1996.

Zane Smith is considered one of the greatest Pirates of all time. Smith was a pitcher, and is most known for his work with the Pirates. Smith was a part of two World Series (1994 and 1996) with the Pirates. Smith is a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame.

10. Blaise Ilsley

Blaise Ilsley

Ilsley was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 6th round of the 1988 amateur draft. After playing in the minors, Ilsley made his MLB debut with the Cubs on April 4, 1994.

Ilsley pitched in the majors for 10 seasons, all with the Cubs. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves in 2001, and finished his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007.

In his 10 seasons in the majors, Ilsley had a record of 103-131. Ilsley was a coach with the Cubs from 2009 to 2013. Ilsley is now the pitching coach for the Chicago White Sox.

Blaise Ilsley had a successful MLB career as a player for the Chicago Cubs from 1994-2004. He accumulated a win-loss record of 0-0 and a 7.80 ERA. Ilsley served as a coach for the St.

Louis Cardinals from 2012-2017. He helped lead the team to three World Series appearances (2013, 2015, 2016). Ilsley is a highly respected coach and manager in the baseball community. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he can share with players.

Ilsley is currently the bench coach for the Houston Astros. He is expected to serve in that role through the end of the 2018 season. Ilsley is a native of the state of Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University and played for the LSU Tigers baseball team.

Ilsley was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. Ilsley is married and has two children. He enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.

11. Brian Omogrosso

Brian Omogrosso is a right-handed pitcher who made his MLB debut in 2012 with the Chicago White Sox. Omogrosso was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 5th round of the 2002 MLB draft.

Omogrosso has spent most of his career in the minor leagues, playing for the Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Chicago White Sox. Omogrosso has a career record of 106-76 with a 3.92 ERA in 318 games.

Omogrosso has made 10 postseason appearances, including 7 starts, with a 5-4 record and 3.09 ERA. Omogrosso is married and has two children. Brian Omogrosso made his MLB debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2013 and had a record of 0-2.

Omogrosso had 34 strikeouts in his rookie season, but also gave up 34 earned runs. Omogrosso will likely be back with the White Sox in 2014, but there is no guarantee that he will stay in the MLB for long. Omogrosso is a left-handed pitcher and throws a fastball, slider, and change-up.

Omogrosso is a native of Connecticut and played college baseball at Stony Brook University. Omogrosso is a young prospect and has a lot of potential to improve in the MLB.

12. Nevin Ashley

Nevin Ashley made his MLB debut for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2015. Ashley is a catcher and bullpen catcher. He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 7th round of the 2002 MLB Draft.

Ashley has played in the Majors for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Ashley is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, and was named to the American League All-Star Team in 2013.

Ashley is a member of the United States national team, and has played in the World Baseball Classic. Ashley was born in Indiana, and attended Indiana University. Ashley is married, and has two children. Nevin Ashley is a young coach who is currently working with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Ashley is a relatively new coach, having started his coaching career in 2015. Ashley has experience working with both the major and minor leagues, which gives him a lot of knowledge and experience to bring to the table. 

Ashley's coaching style is patient and he is always looking for ways to improve his players. Ashley is a great teacher, and his players seem to really enjoy working with him. Ashley is a hard worker, and he is always looking for ways to improve his players' skills. 

Ashley is a great motivator, and he is able to get his players to work hard even when things are tough. Ashley is a great strategist, and he is able to plan and execute game plans very well. Ashley is a great leader, and he is able to get his players to follow his lead.

13. Joe Thatcher

Joe Thatcher

Joe Thatcher was born on October 4, 1981 in Kokomo, Indiana. He made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2009. Thatcher is a left-handed pitcher and bats left-handed.

He has a career record of 42-46 with a 4.10 ERA in 219 games. Thatcher has also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, and St. Louis Cardinals. Joe Thatcher was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 6th round of the 2007 MLB Draft.

Joe Thatcher made his MLB debut with the Padres in 2007. Joe Thatcher was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013. Joe Thatcher was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2014. 

Joe Thatcher was traded to the Houston Astros in 2015. Joe Thatcher played his final MLB game with the Houston Astros in 2015.

Joe Thatcher had a win-loss record of 11-16 in his MLB career. Joe Thatcher had an earned run average of 3.38 in his MLB career. Joe Thatcher had a strikeout total of 270 in his MLB career.

Ryan Strausborger made his MLB debut for the Texas Rangers on August 5th, 2015. In his debut, Strausborger batted .200 with 9 hits and 1 home run. He would go on to play in 3 more MLB games for the Rangers before being released on October 4th, 2015. 

After being released by the Rangers, Strausborger signed with the Detroit Tigers but would only play in 1 game for them before being released as well. Strausborger then signed with the Tampa Bay Rays but would only play in 1 game for them before being released as well.

Strausborger then signed with the Seattle Mariners but would only play in 1 game for them before being released. Strausborger has now retired from professional baseball.

Alex Graman is a relief pitcher who has played in the MLB and NPB. Graman was drafted by the Yankees in the 3rd round of the 1994 draft.

In 2006, Graman signed with the Seibu Lions in Japan and had a successful season, posting a 2.30 ERA in 73 appearances. Graman is a left-handed pitcher and throws a split-finger fastball. Graman is a two-time All-Star and has won several awards, including the 2004 AL Rolaids Relief Man of the Year award.

Graman is currently a free agent and has not played in the MLB in over two years. Graman is married and has two children. Graman is a relief pitcher who is known for his strong fastball and ability to get hitters out.

16. Mike Gardiner

Gardiner was a pitcher for the Mariners from 1990-1998. He compiled a record of 149-153 with a 4.11 ERA in 524 games. Gardiner was dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998, where he spent the next 3 seasons.

Gardiner was released by the White Sox in 2007 and signed with the Texas Rangers. He spent the next 2 seasons with the team and compiled a record of 7-10 with a 4.27 ERA.

Gardiner signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010 and spent the next 2 seasons with the team. He compiled a record of 5-8 with a 4.75 ERA in 111 games. Gardiner signed with the Seattle Mariners in 2012 and spent the next 2 seasons with the team. 

He compiled a record of 2-3 with a 5.02 ERA in 12 games. Gardiner was released by the Mariners in March of 2014 and signed with the Oakland Athletics.

He spent the next 2 seasons with the team and compiled a record of 2-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 52 games. 

Gardiner was released by the Athletics in October of 2014 and signed with the Texas Rangers. He spent the rest of the season with the Rangers and compiled a record of 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 2 games.

17. Hunter Owen

Hunter Owen is a free agent and was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Owen made his MLB debut with the Indians in 2017 and played in 96 games, batting .232 with four home runs and 33 RBIs.

Owen was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 2018 and played in 64 games, batting .249 with three home runs and 20 RBIs. Owen was traded to the Indianapolis Indians in 2019 and has played in 73 games, batting .274 with six home runs and 28 RBIs.

Johnson was a six-time All-Star and won four Gold Glove Awards. After his playing career, Johnson served as the president of the Atlanta Braves from 2007 to 2012. In 2015, Johnson was named the president of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Wallace Johnson is married to Elaine and they have two children. Johnson is retired from baseball but continues to work as a baseball analyst for Fox Sports. Wallace Johnson is a respected baseball figure and is known for his leadership and skill on the field.

20. Rick Grapenthin

Rick Grapenthin is a retired pitcher who played for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Baltimore Orioles. Grapenthin was drafted by the Brewers in the 6th round of the 1977 amateur draft.

He made his MLB debut with the Brewers in 1980. He played for the Orioles from 1988 to 1992. Grapenthin finished his career with the Brewers in 1995. Grapenthin had a career ERA of 3.77.

He was a part of the Brewers team that won the division title in 1992. Grapenthin was inducted into the Brewers Hall of Fame in 2003. Grapenthin currently works as a broadcaster for the Orioles.

Rick Grapenthin was a starting pitcher for the Montreal Expos from 1983-1985. He had a record of 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in 34 innings pitched. Rick Grapenthin was born on May 3, 1948, in Southern California.

Rick Grapenthin was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the third round of the 1970 amateur draft. Rick Grapenthin made his MLB debut on May 3, 1983, against the Detroit Tigers. Rick Grapenthin pitched for the Montreal Expos until he was traded to the Houston Astros on June 29, 1985.

Rick Grapenthin later played for the Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals. Rick Grapenthin retired from baseball in 1990. Rick Grapenthin currently resides in Southern California. Rick Grapenthin is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

21. Mitch Stetter

He is a left-handed pitcher who has spent time with the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, and Detroit Tigers. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2000 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

He made his MLB debut with the Brewers in 2003. He was traded to the Royals in 2007. He was traded to the Tigers in 2009. He was traded to the Houston Astros in 2013. He was released by the Astros in 2014.

He signed with the Brewers in 2015. He was released by the Brewers in 2016. Mitch Stetter was a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers from 2007-2011. He had an 8-2 record with a 4.08 ERA in that time. He also struck out 89 batters in his career.

After retiring as a player, Stetter became a coach for the Kansas City Royals. He has been with the Royals since 2023.

22. David Doster

David Doster is a second baseman who played in the MLB for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1996 to 1999. Doster was drafted by the Phillies in the 6th round of the 1990 MLB Draft.

He made his MLB debut on June 16, 1996. Doster played for the Phillies until 1999. Doster then played for the Yokohama BayStars in Japan from 2001 to 1999. Doster is currently a scout for the Phillies.

Doster has also played for the Indianapolis Indians and the Richmond Braves in the Minor Leagues. Doster is a switch hitter and has a batting average of .193 in the MLB. Doster is married and has three children.

Doster signed with the Texas Rangers in 2008, but was released after just 2 games. Doster signed with the Seattle Mariners in 2009, and was released after just 2 games.

Doster signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010, and played in just 3 games before being released. Doster signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011, and played in just 2 games before being released. 

Doster signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012, and played in just 2 games before being released. David Doster is one of the most recognizable and successful players in NPB history.

Hannahs started his coaching career at his alma mater, Indiana State, in 2001. He has since worked his way up the coaching ranks, including stints at Northern Illinois, Murray State, and Indiana. 

Hannahs is a four-time MVC Coach of the Year and was recently named the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I Coach of the Year.

Hannahs was born in Cambridge, Ohio in 1967 and played baseball and basketball at Indiana State. In 1989, he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 24th round of the amateur draft. Hannahs is married with two children and is a chiropractor by profession.

He is also a member of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. Warn is currently the offensive coordinator at North Dakota State. Bob Warn was an influential coach in the history of Indiana State athletics.

He led the Hoosiers to a number of championships, including three in the Missouri Valley Conference. Warn was inducted into the Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998. He retired in 2006 after 36 years at the helm of the Hoosiers’ program.
