The Detroit Tigers have a long and storied history as one of the original eight charter franchises in Major League Baseball. Over the years, many great players have donned their uniform, including Ty Cobb, Hank Greenberg, Mickey Mantle and Al Kaline.

While there are many great Tiger players who stand out above the rest, here are five who would be considered some of the best to ever play for Detroit:. . 1) Ty Cobb – Few athletes can lay claim to having dominated their sport like Cobb did during his heyday with the Tigers.

He was a terror on both sides of the ball and is still regarded as one of baseball’s all-time greatest hitters. 2) Hank Greenberg – One of only two men in history to hit over .400 in six different seasons (the other being Barry Bonds), Greenberg was an intimidating force at first base and helped lead Detroit to four World Series appearances between 1934 and 1939.

He remains arguably the most popular player ever to wear a Tiger uniform. 3) Mickey Mantle – Considered by many to be one of MLB’s greatest power hitters ever, Mantle led Detroit to seven American League pennants and three world championships between 1951 and 1960 — making him one of only nine players in league history with multiple titles. His 555 home runs remain an MLB record.

4) Al Kaline – A ten-time All-Star selection who played 18 seasons with Detroit from 1956 through 1976, Kaline ranks fourth all-time on team hits (2256).
