Detroit Pistons Stage Impressive Comeback

The Detroit Pistons showed their resilience and determination in a thrilling 94-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Summer League on Wednesday.

The Pistons trailed by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, but they did not give up and mounted a furious comeback in the final period, outscoring the Raptors 28-13.

The Pistons were led by their rookie duo of Cade Cunningham and Luka Garza, who combined for 38 points, 15 rebounds, and six assists. Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft, had a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including four 3-pointers.

He also added six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Garza, the No. 52 pick and the reigning national player of the year, had a double-double of 18 points and nine rebounds, shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.

The Pistons also got contributions from other players, such as Killian Hayes, who had 10 points, seven assists, and four steals; Saddiq Bey, who had nine points and seven rebounds; and Sekou Doumbouya, who had eight points and six rebounds.

The Pistons played with energy and intensity on both ends of the floor, forcing 21 turnovers and scoring 26 points off them. They also held the Raptors to 38.6% shooting and 25% from 3-point range.

The Raptors were paced by Scottie Barnes, the No. 4 pick in the draft, who had 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Malachi Flynn added 12 points and five assists, while Precious Achiuwa had 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Raptors looked dominant in the first half, leading by as many as 16 points and taking a 54-41 advantage into the break. They extended their lead to 17 early in the third quarter, but the Pistons started to chip away at it with a 15-4 run.

The Pistons entered the fourth quarter down by nine points, but they quickly erased that deficit with a 10-0 spurt to take their first lead of the game at 76-75 with 6:35 left. The game was tight from then on, with neither team leading by more than four points.

The Pistons took the lead for good at 88-86 with 1:39 remaining on a layup by Garza. Cunningham then sealed the win with a clutch 3-pointer with 28 seconds left to make it 91-86.

The Pistons improved to 2-1 in the Summer League, while the Raptors fell to 1-2. The Pistons will face the New York Knicks on Friday, while the Raptors will take on the Houston Rockets on Thursday.
