Pat Tillman was a professional football player who served in the United States Army during the Iraq War and War in Afghanistan. Tillman was killed by friendly fire while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2004.

After graduating from high school, Tillman played college football for Arizona State before being drafted into the NFL by the Baltimore Ravens in 1998. He spent four seasons with Baltimore before joining the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent in 2002.

In his career, Tillman recorded over 200 tackles and three interceptions while also playing on two Super Bowl teams (XXXIV, XXXVIII). His death has been cited as an impetus to increase military recruitment efforts among American youth.

Along with other service members including Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy and World War II veteran John Basilone, Pat Tillman is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. 

The Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year Award was one of many honors Pat Tillman received as an NFL player.

He was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan after leading his unit to victory against Taliban forces. His death has inspired others to join the military and fight for their country, as well as raise awareness about mental health issues among veterans.

Pat Tillman's life story serves as an inspiration to all Americans and demonstrates what is possible when you dedicate yourself to your goals and work hard at anything you set your mind to do

2. Jake Plummer

Jake Plummer is a retired NFL quarterback who played for the Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 1997 NFL draft.

Plummer led his teams to three division titles (1998 with Arizona, 2001 with Denver, and 2003 with Tampa Bay) and one Super Bowl appearance (XLVIII). In total, he completed 511 passes for 6,626 yards and 49 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,202 yards on 291 carries.

After retiring from football in 2006, Plummer began working as an analyst on Fox Sports' college football coverage team before leaving that role in 2013 to become an ambassador for helmet manufacturer Riddell. 

Jake Plummer was a three-time First-team All-American at the University of Utah and played in two Pro Bowls.

He led the Arizona Cardinals to their first NFC Championship Game appearance in over 20 years in 2000 and then helped them win Super Bowl XXXIII against the Tennessee Titans.

After retiring from football, Jake became an analyst for Fox Sports Net and ESPN radio as well as appearing on various shows such as The Dan Patrick Show, Around The League Live, Pardon My Take, and more.

In 2017, he published his autobiography entitled "Undefeated" which chronicled his career both on and off the field.

Terrell Suggs is a two-time Super Bowl champion and defensive player of the year. He played college football at Arizona State, where he was an All-American in 2002.

The Baltimore Ravens drafted him with pick 10 in the 2003 NFL Draft, and he has since spent his entire career with the team. 

In 2017, Terrell Suggs became just the eighth linebacker to reach 1000 tackles in their career and the fourth player overall to do so while also recording 15 or more sacks multiple times (he achieved this feat twice).

Outside linebacker is arguably his best position on defense due to his speed and athleticism; however, he can play any spot along the front four if needed by coach John Harbaugh.

Despite being 40 years old at the end of 2018, Terrell Suggs looks set for another impressive season as a Raven; whether it be leading Baltimore back to glory once again or picking up where they left off last time around remains to be seen.

Terrell Suggs is one of the most decorated and accomplished players in NFL history. He has won numerous awards and accolades, including six Pro Bowl selections and three Ted Hendricks Awards.

Suggs was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens with the sixth overall pick in 2003, becoming just the third defensive player to be chosen first overall. In his nine-year career, he has accumulated 886 tackles (3rd all-time), 139 sacks (5th all-time), and 7 interceptions (tied for 5th).

Suggs is also a two-time First Team All-American and was named Pac 10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2002. His 24 sacks that season are still an NCAA record. 

On February 6th, 2011 Terrell Suggs became just the second Raven ever to win both The Walter Payton Award as well as The Butkus Award, which is given annually to college football's best linebacker.

Todd Heap is a former NFL tight end who played for the Baltimore Ravens (2001-2010) and Arizona Cardinals (2011-2012). Todd Heap was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft, and he spent his entire career with that team.

Todd Heap was an All-Pro selection twice during his time with the Ravens, and he also won two Super Bowls (XXXVIII, XXXIX) as part of that organization.

After spending one year with the Arizona Cardinals, Todd returned to Baltimore in 2013 where he retired after playing one more season.

Todd Heap is a two-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro. Todd Heap was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Todd Heap played for the Ravens from 2002 to 2009, and he helped them win two Super Bowls (2002, 2003).

In 2006, Todd Heap was named Tight End of the Year by his peers after having one of his best seasons ever with 82 receptions for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns.

After leaving Baltimore in 2009, Todd Heap signed with the Arizona Cardinals but only played one season before retiring at age 33 due to injury concerns stemming from concussions sustained during his career.

On October 10th 2017 it was announced that Todd had been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease which is a neurodegenerative disorder that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord causing muscle weakness and paralysis.

5. Zane Gonzalez

Gonzalez was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 2017 NFL Draft but did not appear in a game for them. He was then traded to the Arizona Cardinals before being released by them and signed with the Detroit Lions.

Gonzalez has appeared in all 32 games for Carolina since signing with them in 2021, making 26 of his 36 field goal attempts (72%) while also averaging 41 yards per punt on 94 punts. 

Gonzalez is one of only two players ever to make three consecutive 50-plus yard field goals (49 yards against New Orleans Saints, 54 yards against Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

In addition, he is second among active NFL kickers with an 89% touchback rate on kicks returned inside their own 20-yard line over his career - trailing only Seattle Seahawks' Sebastian Janikowski (98%). 

Gonzalez was a unanimous All-American in 2016 and won the Lou Groza Award that same year. Gonzalez has been a consistent player for both his college team and the NFL, with two first-team All-Pac-12 nods and eighty percent field goal accuracy over his career.

He is also known for being one of the best long-distance kickers in the game, making 57 out of his 113 attempts over his career so far.

6. Darren Woodson

Darren Woodson played safety for the Dallas Cowboys from 1992 to 2004. He was a two-time Pro Bowler and was selected to five consecutive All-Pro teams, as well as being named First Team All-NFL in 2001 and 2003.

In 2002, he became the first player in NFL history with 1,000 career tackles and 10 interceptions. After retiring from football, Woodson worked as a broadcaster for Fox Sports Southwest until his retirement in 2018.

Darren Woodson is a former NFL cornerback and three-time Super Bowl champion. He was named First-team All-Pro in 1994, 1998, and 2000. In 2002, he won the Bart Starr Award as the best player on the Dallas Cowboys that year.

Darren Woodson finished his career with 1,350 tackles, 23 interceptions (second all-time), 2 touchdowns (tied for third all-time), 17 forced fumbles (third all-time), 11 fumble recoveries (fourth all-time), and 11 quarterback sacks (seventh all-time).

7. Danny White

Danny White is a three-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro quarterback who played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1976 to 1988. He was inducted into the Arizona State Hall of Fame in 2001, and his jersey number 11 was retired by the Cowboys in 1998.

White also served as an assistant coach with both Memphis (1995–1996) and Dallas (1997–1998). In 2003, he became quarterbacks coach for the St. Louis Rams but resigned after one season due to differences with head coach Mike Martz. 

White then spent two seasons as offensive coordinator at Indianapolis before being fired in 2007 following a 1-15 season that resulted in him losing his job security; Colts owner Jim Irsay said "it's time we move on".

After spending 2009 out of coaching altogether, he rejoined St . Louis' staff under new head coach Jeff Fisher as passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach; this position he held until January 2013 when. Fisher was dismissed after another poor performance by their QBs led to speculation about the Whites' future with the team again. 

He was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers from 1992-2004 and the Utah Blaze from 2006-2008. He led both teams to ArenaBowl appearances, with his first win coming in VIII against the Tampa Bay Storm.

White has a career NFL record of 97–143 (.410). During his three seasons as head coach of the Blaze, he compiled a 17–28 record (.469).

8. Mike Haynes

Haynes was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 1976 NFL Draft. He played for the team from 1976 to 1982. Haynes then signed with the Los Angeles Raiders and played for them from 1983 to 1989.

His most notable moment during his time with the Raiders was when he returned an interception 93 yards for a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns in 1984. After retiring from football, Haynes became a police officer in Arizona and has served there since 1990.

Haynes was one of the most decorated players in NFL history, winning a Super Bowl and earning nine Pro Bowl appearances. Haynes was an All-Pro cornerback for six seasons and also earned First-Team honors from The Associated Press twice. 

He is best known for his interception return against the Dallas Cowboys that helped lead New England to their first championship victory in 18 years.

9. Randall McDaniel

McDaniel was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 1988, where he played for nine seasons. He won two Super Bowls with the team and was a three-time Pro Bowler.

McDaniel retired from the NFL after playing for Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001. After his retirement, he worked as a television commentator and analyst for various NFL games.

Randall McDaniel was a dominant player in the NFL for over 20 years. He started at least 220 games and played in 9 Pro Bowls. His best season came in 1993 when he had 111 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 sack.

Randall McDaniel is one of just 8 players to have 11 sacks and 50 pass deflections in their career (he accomplished this twice). Randall McDaniel is also notable for his work as a team captain during his time with the Vikings and Baltimore Ravens respectively.

In 2018, Randall McDaniel was elected into the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor as part of their 40th anniversary celebration season honoring all Viking greats from that era including Randy Moss, Cris Carter, Barry Sanders, etc.

10. John Henry Johnson

Johnson was a fullback and halfback in the NFL. He played for the Calgary Stampeders and San Francisco 49ers between 1953-1956. Johnson was selected to play in two Pro Bowls during his career.

John Henry Johnson passed away on June 3, 2011, at the age of 81 after a long battle with cancer John Henry Johnson was a running back for the Detroit Lions from 1957-1959 and then again from 1960-1965.

In those six seasons, he totaled 6,803 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns. He was originally signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1952 but did not play with them until after serving in the military during the Korean War.

After playing two seasons with them, he was traded to the Houston Oilers where he played his final three years of professional football before retiring at the end of the 1966 season. 

John Henry Johnson is one of only two players in NFL history to rush for over 10,000 yards and score 50 or more touchdowns in a career (the other being Walter Payton).

He is also one of only four players ever elected to both the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well as be enshrined into the San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame (alongside Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Steve Young). 

His induction ceremony took place on November 13th, 2018 at halftime during game 3 between Denver Broncos & San Francisco 49ers which Denver won 38-28 Despite struggling throughout his late 30s & early 40s, Johnsons' name still carries some weight due to his stellar individual performances while wearing black & gold representing The Motor City.

11. Brandon Aiyuk

Brandon Aiyuk was a standout wide receiver and punt returner at Robert McQueen High School in Reno, Nevada. He attended Sierra College for two years before transferring to Arizona State University as a junior in 2018.

After redshirting his first year with the Sun Devils, Aiyuk made an immediate impact in his second season, catching 45 passes for 748 yards (17th-most among FBS receivers) and five touchdowns while adding 43 tackles on defense.

Brandon was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2020 NFL Draft after spending time with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals during pre-draft workouts. Brandon Aiyuk is a 2020 NFL Draft prospect who was born in Montreal, Quebec.

He attended college at the University of Utah and played for the Utes from 2018 to 2020. In 2019, he was named First-team All-Pac-12 after recording 190 receptions for 2,530 yards and 20 touchdowns. 

Brandon has been compared to Odell Beckham Jr., Antonio Brown, DeAndre Hopkins, and Mike Evans due to his size (6'3", 213 pounds), athleticism (40-inch vertical jump), route running ability, and touchdown production (20 scores in 43 career games).

The 49ers picked up his contract option for the 2021 season on January 10th.

12. Charley Taylor

Charley Taylor was a prolific wide receiver and halfback in the NFL, AFL and XFL. He played for Arizona State before being drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1964.

After six seasons with Baltimore, he signed with the New York Jets in 1971 where he spent 14 years playing until his retirement in 1988. Charley also represented Team USA at three World Cups (1974, 1978 and 1982) and two Olympics (1976 and 1980).

He died aged 80 after a long battle with cancer Taylor played wide receiver for the Washington Redskins from 1964 to 1975. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion and first-team All-Pro in 1967. Taylor also led the NFL in receptions twice, and he was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984.

13. Eric Allen

Eric Allen was a cornerback and part of the Eagles' Super Bowl-winning team in 1988. He played for three teams, including the Saints and Raiders, before retiring after 2001.

Allen coached at Arizona State from 2003 to 2010 and then with USC from 2011 to 2013 before returning to coaching with Oregon this season. 

Eric Allen was a standout defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1988-1995 and earned First Team All-Pro honors in both 1989 and 1991.

He also played in six Pro Bowls, making him one of the most decorated players in the Eagles' history. Allen holds NFL records for interceptions returned for touchdowns (4) and forced fumbles (6). 

Following his retirement as an Eagle, Eric now works as a defensive backs coach with the San Diego Fleet of the American Football League (AFL).

Edwards was an Undrafted free agent out of San Diego State in 1977. He started his NFL career as a cornerback with the Philadelphia Eagles, then played for the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams before ending his playing days with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1985.

Edwards became a head coach in 2002, leading the New York Jets to a 9-7 record over two seasons before being fired after going 3-13 during his tenure with Arizona State University from 2006 to 2008. 

Edwards has since served as an analyst on ESPN's "Monday Night Football" coverage, most notably calling plays for the former pupil.

Nick Foles when won Super Bowl LII MVP honors for quarterbacking the Philadelphia Eagles against New England Patriots 34-28 at UPR Arecibo Stadium in February 2018; it was their first championship win since 1960 and only their third overall (in total).

In March 2019, Edwards replaced Sean McVay as offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs following McVay's appointment by the Washington Redskins as head coach of that team. Under McVay, who had been quarterbacks coach there previously, KC reached its second straight AFC title game but lost 44–29. 

Jacksonville Jaguars despite posting 476 yards passing and 5 touchdowns by Patrick Mahomes II – become just one instance where an assistant inherited/coached by someone else has led a team to victory while holding or exceeding control of playcalling duties. 

Edwards is one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, having led his teams to division titles and playoff appearances on five occasions.

Edwards began his coaching career at San Jose State before moving to Kansas City, where he was defensive backs coach from 1992-1995. He then spent time with Tampa Bay as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach, before returning to New York for a spell as Jets head coach from 2001-2005. 

After a short stint back in Kansas City as Chiefs Head Coach from 2006-2008, Edwards moved on to Arizona State where he's been employed since 2018.

15. Carl Bradford

Bradford was drafted in the fourth round by the Green Bay Packers in 2014. He played for the Green Bay Packers for two seasons before signing with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016.

Bradford played for the Bills and Bears in 2017 before signing with the Chicago Bears in 2018. Carl Bradford was a highly touted defensive back out of Arizona who was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Bradford made an immediate impact with the Bengals, starting all 16 games in his rookie season. In his second season, Bradford was named to the All-Pac-12 team. Bradford played in all 16 games in each of his three seasons with the Bengals. 

The Bengals decided to let Bradford go in the 2018 offseason, and he signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Bradford has started all 12 games for the Roughriders this season, recording 49 tackles and one sack. 

Bradford is set to play in the 2018 CFL playoffs for the Roughriders. Bradford is considered a long-term prospect with a lot of upside. Bradford is currently the third-highest rated player on the Saskatchewan Roughriders roster, according to Pro Football Focus.

Curley Culp was a defensive tackle who played for the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. Curley Culp was born in Yuma, Arizona, in 1946.

Curley Culp played college football at Arizona State, and was drafted by the Broncos in the 1968 NFL Draft. Curley Culp spent his entire NFL career with the Broncos and the Chiefs.

Damyjai Foster is a 29-year-old manager of player development for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Foster played football at Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro before attending Arizona State.

He was undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft but was signed to the New England Patriots. Foster was waived by the Patriots in 2017 but was signed to the Arizona Cardinals. He was released by the Cardinals in 2018 and signed to the Toronto Argonauts.

Hill was a three-time All-American at Arizona State and was a member of the 1972 National Championship team. He also played in two Pro Bowls. After his playing career was over, Hill became a football coach at his alma mater, Arizona State.

He was the head coach of the team from 1995 to 1999 and again from 2007 to 2009. Hill was inducted into the ASU Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. 

He is also a member of the NFL Alumni Association. Hill is currently the wide receivers coach for the Arizona Cardinals.

J. D. Hill was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1971 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He played for the Bills for all four seasons of his NFL career. 

He was a standout player for the Bills, recording over 100 tackles in each of his first two seasons. Hill was traded to the Detroit Lions in 1976, and he played for them for two seasons before retiring.

He was a member of the New York Titans and the Arizona Cardinals. Burton was a three-time All-Pro and a member of the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1960s. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. Burton is a member of the Arizona Cardinals Ring of Honor.

Burton is currently the assistant vice president for player personnel for the Cardinals. Burton was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1938. He graduated from Arizona State University in 1958 with a degree in business administration. Burton and his wife, Shirley, have two children.

Woody Green was a professional running back who played for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. He was drafted by the Chiefs in the first round of the 1974 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with the team.

He was a part of the team that made it to the Super Bowl in 1974, but they were defeated by the Minnesota Vikings. Green was also a member of the Chiefs team that reached the AFC Championship in 1976, but they were once again defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As Arizona State football continues to evolve and grow, it is hard to determine a definitive “best players of all time.” However, some Sun Devil legends that come to mind include Pat Tillman, Darren Woodson, and Larry Fitzgerald.

With new talent constantly emerging and old talent continuing to play at an elite level, ASU’s football program is poised for continued success.
