The 2017–18 NHL season was an historic moment in the league’s storied history. For the first time in its 101st year of operation, the NHL welcomed a new expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights, bringing the total number of teams in the league to 31.

This season also marked the first full season of 3-on-3 overtime across the league, a rule change implemented the previous season to reduce the number of shootouts, and the first season with a new coach’s challenge rule. The regular season began on October 4, 2017 and ended on April 8, 2018.

This season was full of thrilling moments, from new individual and team records set, to spectacular goals and come-from-behind victories, to the Golden Knights’ improbable journey to the Stanley Cup Final.

Connor McDavid is a young, incredibly talented hockey player who was drafted first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. 

McDavid has quickly become one of the best players in the league and is considered to be a superstar.

He is currently playing for the Edmonton Oilers. McDavid is a natural scorer who can light up the scoreboard with his amazing skills on the ice. 

He has already won numerous awards and accolades during his short career so far, including being named Rookie of The Year in 2015 and 2017 as well as MVP of The 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs.

McDavid will undoubtedly continue to amass accolades and win trophies throughout his illustrious career - he truly is an incredible talent. Connor McDavid is the first player in NHL history to score 100 points in his rookie season. 

Connor McDavid was born on January 6, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario. In October 2014, Connor McDavid was drafted with the 1st overall pick by the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Draft.

Connor Mc David led all rookies with 67 goals and 113 points during the 2015-2016 season which earned him a nomination for The Calder Trophy as Rookie of The Year. 

Connor Mc David has been named to play for Team Canada at both the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and the 2018 Olympic Games.

2. Nathan MacKinnon

Nathan MacKinnon is a gifted hockey player who has already enjoyed a very successful career. 

He was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2013 and has since gone on to win several awards, including the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie of that year.

His success continues into 2019, with him scoring 29 goals for the Avalanche so far this season. 

Nathan Mackinnon is known for his speed and skill on ice - making him an incredibly dangerous player to opposing teams. 

In 2020 he will be entering his fourth season with the Avalanche and looks set to continue his impressive form long into the future.

Nathan MacKinnon was drafted 1st overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2013. He has since been a staple on the team's roster, scoring over 100 points in each of his first 3 seasons and helping lead them to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories. 

Nathan is an explosive player with great puck control who can score from anywhere on the ice. His play has led him to be nominated for several awards, including MVP and Hart Memorial Trophy in 2016-2017 season respectively.

In 2018 he became just the second player ever (after Wayne Gretzky) to win both the Art Ross and Hart trophies in consecutive years, cementing his status as one of hockey's best players ever.

3. Victor Hedman

Victor Hedman is a defenseman for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was drafted by the Bolts with their first-round pick, number seven overall in 2008. 

Hedman has made an impact on both ends of the ice during his time in Tampa Bay and has twice been named to the NHL All-Star Team (2011, 2013).

Injuries have slowed down Hedman in recent years but he is still considered one of the best defenders in the game. 

Victor Hedman will continue to play at a high level for as long as he can stay healthy – he’s a player that fans should keep an eye on going forward. Victor Hedman is a defenseman for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

He was drafted by the team in 2009 and has been with them since. Victor Hedman has had a successful career, winning two Stanley Cups with the Lighting and being named to multiple All-Star teams. 

Victor Hedman also plays for Sweden at the international level and has won a gold medal at the World Championships as well as silver medals at both the Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey.

In 2017, Victor Hedman signed an eight-year contract extension with the Lightning that will keep him with the club until the 2024-25 season.

4. Patrick Kane

Patrick Kane is an NHL right wing who has spent his entire career with the Chicago Blackhawks. He was drafted first overall in the 2007 NHL Draft and quickly established himself as one of the league's top young stars.

In 2013, Kane scored 50 goals to help lead the Blackhawks to their third Stanley Cup championship in six seasons. Kane was voted onto the U.S. 

Men’s National Team for various tournaments throughout 2011-12 and 2012-13, including a gold medal at the IIHF World Championship that year.

After being sidelined for nearly two months due to a knee injury sustained during preseason play, he returned to score 16 goals in 19 games during December 2014 - earning him player of the month honors from The Hockey News magazine. 

Patrick Kane is married with two children and enjoys playing golf and spending time with family members Patrick Kane is a professional ice hockey player for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL).

He was drafted first overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Blackhawks and made his debut with them during the 2008–09 season. In 2010, he won a gold medal with Team USA at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. 

He also played on United States teams that won silver medals at both World Championships (2017 and 2018) as well as their fourth consecutive appearance in the World Junior Championship finals (2007-11). 

On October 5th, 2019, Patrick Kane scored his 500th career goal in an 8-0 win over Nashville Predators.

6. Steven Stamkos

Stamkos is a talented and skilled hockey player who has been able to achieve great success with the Tampa Bay Lightning. 

Stamkos was born in Canada but grew up playing hockey for minor league teams before being drafted by the Lightning in 2008.

He has won multiple awards, including two Conn Smythe Trophies as MVP of the playoffs, during his time with the Lighting. 

Stamkos is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and there are many rumors linking him to a move away from Tampa Bay.

However, he has yet to confirm any plans and will most likely decide what route he takes later this year. 

Stamkos is one of the most exciting players in NHL history and his ability on the ice guarantees that he will continue achieving great things for years to come. 

Stamkos was the first overall draft pick in 2008 by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Stamkos has had a successful career with the Lightning, leading them to two Stanley Cup appearances and one Eastern Conference championship. 

Stamkos is also a key member of Canada's national team, having won gold at both the 2014 Olympics and World Championships. He will be an important player for years to come as he continues to develop his skills on ice.

7. Leon Draisaitl

Leon Draisaitl was born on October 27th, 1995 in Cologne, Germany. He is a 6'2" tall centreman who currently plays for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. 

Draisaitl first made an impact at the junior level with his hometown team HC Köln before being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2013 as part of their inaugural draft class.

In 2017 he won his first Stanley Cup with Edmonton over the Boston Bruins. 

Outside of hockey, Draisaitl enjoys spending time with his family and friends, including participating in charity events and supporting various causes close to his heart such as helping disadvantaged youth find opportunities they may not have otherwise had access to.

Leon Draisaitl is a young, talented center/left wing who was drafted 3rd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2014 NHL Draft. 

He has had an impressive playing career to date, representing Germany at various junior levels before making his debut with them at the senior level in 2013. 

In 2014 he signed with the Oilers and made his professional debut that season, scoring 10 goals and adding 18 assists for 28 points in 48 games played.

In 2015-16 Leon continued to perform well for Edmonton, posting 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists) in 66 games played as they reached the playoffs for only the second time in franchise history; however, they were unable to advance past the first round this time around. 

Leon score 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) in 82 games as he led all forwards on Edmonton's roster en route to their third consecutive playoff appearance; however, once again they were unable to make it past the first round this time around - losing 2-1 against Calgary Flames in six hard-fought games.

Leon so far - recording 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) through 35 games played which puts him 5th among all NHL players currently playing - leading many pundits and experts to declare him one of 'the best centers / left wings' currently active.

8. David Pastrňák

David Pastrňák was born on May 25th, 1996 in Havířov, Czech Republic. 

At just 6'1", David is one of the smallest players in the NHL and his size has often been a disadvantage against bigger opposition.

Despite this, David has played for HC Kladno (junior), Boston Bruins (rookie), Worcester Sharks (AHL) and Providence Bruins (ECHL). 

In 2016-17 he led all AHL rookies with 36 goals and 76 points in 78 games as Worcester Sharks advanced to the Calder Cup Final where they lost to Toronto Marlies 4-3.

The following season he posted 24 goals and 56 points in 73 games as Providence was again eliminated from playoff contention late in the season by Hartford Wolf Pack 3-2.

In overtime of Game 7 of their first-round series which also went into overtime after regulation time had expired resulting David Pastrňák was drafted 25th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2014 NHL Draft.

David Pastrňák has played for the Czech Republic at both junior and senior levels, including a gold medal victory at the World Junior Championships in 2013. David Pastrňák is primarily a right-wing, but he can also play center or left-wing if needed. 

David Pastrňák scored his first professional goal on October 25th, 2014 against Montreal Canadiens goaltender Dustin Tokarski. 

Injuries have been an issue for David Pastrňák throughout his career; however, he has bounced back each time to play again later that season or even further down the line.

It is expected that David Pastrnaek will be playing with the Bruins full-time starting next season after impressing during his rookie campaign last year.

9. Brad Marchand

Brad Marchand has spent his entire NHL career with the Boston Bruins. He is a very versatile player who can score goals and assists as well as play in all three zones.

Known for his hard work ethic, Marchand is an important part of the Bruins’ success over the years. In 2016, he was named to the All-Star Game and won MVP honors after scoring four goals and adding two assists in six games.

Brad Marchand will be playing at least another five seasons in the NHL so make sure to watch him closely. 

Brad Marchand is a left winger for the Boston Bruins, and he has been playing in the NHL since 2008. He was drafted by the Bruins in 2006, and quickly became one of their top players.

In 2011-12, he led all rookies with 44 goals and 97 points, which helped lead Boston to their first Stanley Cup championship in 39 years. 

Brad Marchand continued his success into subsequent seasons, amassing over 150 points three times (2012-13; 2013-14; 2014-15). 

His hard work off the ice also won him several awards including being named an alternate captain for both Boston's AHL team (the Providence Bruins) as well as Canada's national team at various tournaments throughout his career.

As of the present day, Brad Marchand continues to be one of the best forwards in hockey - ranking fourth overall on the all-time assists list behind only Wayne Gretzky、 Mario Lemieux & Gordie Howe with 239 helpers from 607 games played.

10. Andrei Vasilevskiy

Vasilevskiy is a goaltender for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Vasilevskiy was drafted by the Lighting in 2012 and has since developed into one of their top goaltenders.

He helped lead Russia to silver at the World Juniors this year, as well as helping Team Europe win a bronze medal at the same tournament. 

Vasilevskiy is considered one of the brightest young goaltenders in hockey and will be looking to continue his development with the Lightning moving forward Andrei Vasilevskiy was born in Minsk, Belarus on March 5th, 1995.

He captained Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) from 2016-2018 and helped lead them to two championships during that time period. 

Vasilevskiy made his NHL debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 9th, 2018 against the Carolina Hurricanes and recorded a win in his first game as a starter. 

Andrei is currently playing for Russian club Ufa in the KHL playoffs and has yet to lose any games this postseason thus far.

Andrei Vasilevskiy is an extremely talented goaltender who will hopefully continue to develop and reach even greater heights within the NHL.

11. Aleksander Barkov

Aleksander Barkov was born on September 2nd, 1995 in Tampere, Finland. He is a center ice hockey player and has played for the Florida Panthers since 2015.

Aleksander Barkov has scored over 100 points in each of his three seasons with the Panthers, including 118 points in 2016-17. 

Aleksander Barkov is known for his strong defensive play and ability to score goals both from close range and further out on the ice.

Aleksander Barkov was drafted second overall by the Florida Panthers in 2013. He has since played for Tappara in Finland and is currently with the Panthers. 

Aleksander Barkov has represented his country at several international competitions, including the World Junior Championships and the Olympics.

His hockey career has been successful so far, winning two Stanley Cups with the Panthers in 2016 and 2017. Aleksander Barkov is a very talented player who will be an important part of any team he plays for in future seasons.

12. Patrice Bergeron

Bergeron is a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Boston Bruins. 

Bergeron has been nominated for the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player on five occasions, winning it in 2011 and 2013.

He finished second in voting for the Art Ross Trophy as the leading scorer in 2017–18. Bergeron was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in 2001, but he never played for them because they were moved to Denver before he could make his debut with them.

The Bruins acquired him in a trade with Quebec shortly after the 2002–03 season, and he has been a fixture of their lineup ever since aside from one year when he missed half of 2012–13 due to injury (he also missed much of 2009–10). 

On September 25th, 2018 Patrice Bergeron announced his retirement from professional hockey following 17 seasons of playing 1,257 games scoring 801 points and averaging 0:43 per game.

Including 181 goals and 149 assists over that time span making him the only player ever to score more than 900 career points while averaging under forty minutes played per game Patrice Bergeron has spent his entire professional career with the Boston Bruins and is one of the most consistent players in the NHL.

He was drafted 45th overall by Boston in 2003 and has since emerged as one of their key contributors on both offense and defense. 

Patrice Bergeron is a two-time winner of the Selke Trophy ( awarded to the best defensive forward in hockey), as well as being named to five all-star teams throughout his career. 

In 2018 he became just the third player in league history to record at least 1,500 points and 500 assists for his career - joining Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe Jr., among others. 

Patrice Bergeron will be an unrestricted free agent at the season's end, but there are no indications that he plans to retire from playing hockey anytime soon.

13. Roman Josi

Roman Josi is a defenseman for the Nashville Predators. He has been with the team since its inception in 2006-07 and helped bring it to within one game of winning the Stanley Cup in 2017.

Josi was drafted by Nashville in the third round, 78th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played four seasons (2006-11) with HC Davos before joining Preds' affiliate, EHC Biel/Bienne of the Swiss National League A (NLA).

In his first season with Preds' main club, he notched 20 points (5G+15A) while helping lead them to their first-ever playoff appearance. 

The following year he put up 41 points (10G+31A), earning him an All-Star selection and a spot on Team Europe at both the World Championships and Olympic games; where Switzerland finished fourth after being eliminated from medal contention early on by Canada and Sweden respectively.

Josi's consistent play during his time as a Predator saw him earn the alternate captaincy for two consecutive seasons from 2012-14 before taking over full-time starting 2015-16 when Shea Weber left for Montreal Canadiens. 

Leading Nashville to back-to-back Presidents’ Trophy victories that same year – becoming just one player out of nine total players along with teammate Pekka Rinne who have won multiple MVP awards during their careers playing for either Predators or Penguins organization teams combined.

Roman also became just the second player ever behind Patrick Roy to be named league MVP twice consecutively as well as capturing 3 other major individual honors such as First All-Star Team Selection Twice (NHL & NLA). 

Second Team All-Star Selection Twice(NHL & NLA)and Three-Time winners of the Defensive Player Of The Year Award which he currently holds a record alongside Erik Karlsson among current active defenders. 

Injury-plagued throughout most part of 2018, however, bounced back strong at the beginning 2019 campaign tallying 38 points including 23 goals en route to securing 4th place finish amongst a voting panel consisting mostly of former great offensive defensemen such as Bobby Orr Carey Price Brent Burns Duncan Keith John McEnroe, etc. 

Thus qualifying him once again for entry into the prestigious IIHF World Championship tournament this summer alongside fellow NHL Central Division rivals Connor McDavid Ryan Suter Drew Doughty, etc.

Roman Josi is a defenseman for the Nashville Predators. He was drafted by the Predators in 2008 and has since played for them ever since. Josi started his career with SC Bern before moving on to play in the NHL with Nashville. 

He has represented Switzerland at multiple international tournaments, including World Championships and the Olympics Games. 

In 2017-18, he led all defensemen in scoring with 35 points (10 goals, 25 assists). Roman Josi is considered one of the best defenders in the NHL and will continue to be an important part of the Predators team for years to come.

Johnny Gaudreau is a 29-year-old American forward who currently plays for the Calgary Flames. Gaudreau was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the first round, 22nd overall of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

He then signed with Calgary as an unrestricted free agent in July 2014. In his rookie season (2014-15), Gaudreau set career highs in points (73) and assists (38). 

His 73 points were second highest ever to Jarome Iginla, while his 38 assists ranked third behind Patrick Kane and Phil Kessel.

The following season he improved on both numbers, scoring 94 points and assisting on 51 goals – good for fourth place all-time among rookies in both categories behind only. 

Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, and Mario Lemieux respectively; additionally he made his Stanley Cup playoff debut that year playing 11 games before being eliminated by Anaheim in the first round.

In 2016-17, Johnny continued where he left off from 2015-16 by setting new personal bests again with 97 points (41 goals + 62 assists) en route to being named runner-up for the Hart Memorial Trophy as MVP of the NHL playoffs after leading Calgary to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 2004. 

Injury has been a common theme throughout much of Johnny's professional career - missing over 60% of regular season games due to injury three times including 65 contests during 2017–18 which led some pundits [to] question whether or not this would be his last hurrah. 

However, at age 30 there is still plenty of hockey left inside “Johnny Hockey” so fingers crossed.

Johnny Gaudreau was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 104th overall slot of the 2011 NHL Draft. The left winger has spent his entire professional career with the Flames, debuting in 2014-15. 

Johnny is a prolific scorer, having scored at least 20 goals four times and 40 or more once during his time in Calgary. 

He also racked up over 100 points twice, earning him both an Art Ross Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy as MVP of the NHL's postseason competition. 

In April 2018, it was announced that Gaudreau had signed an eight-year contract extension with Calgary worth $49 million CAD (approximately £37 million GBP). 

Johnny is considered one of Canada’s most promising young players and holds dual citizenship with both Canada and the United States; he made his international debut for Team USA at age 19 against Denmark back in October 2013.

John Tavares will be playing for Team Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo alongside fellow Maple Leaf Auston Matthews. John Tavares was drafted 1st overall by the New York Islanders in the 2009 NHL Draft. 

He has spent his entire playing career with the Islanders, amassing over 570 points in 706 games played.

Tavares was a key part of Team Canada's gold medal victory at the 2016 Olympic Games and captained them to victory in the 2017 World Championship. In 2019 he signed an 8-year extension with the Islanders worth $88 million CAD ($73 million USD). 

John Tavares is considered one of the best goal scorers and talents to ever play for Canada and is widely regarded as one of hockey's all-time greats.

John Carlson is a highly skilled and experienced defenseman who has played in the NHL for eight seasons. He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 2008, and has since become one of their most important players.

Carlson is known for his puck-moving ability and strong defensive play, which have led to him being named to multiple All-Star teams and winning two Stanley Cups with the Capitals (2011, 2018).

Wheeler was drafted 5th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2004 NHL Draft. Wheeler has played in over 800 games in the NHL, recording over 200 goals and 350 assists.

Wheeler has represented the United States at several international tournaments, most notably the World Championships and the Olympics. Wheeler is currently a member of the Winnipeg Jets.

The 2017-2018 NHL season was an historic moment in the league’s storied history. For the first time, a team from outside of North America, the Vegas Golden Knights, participated in the league.
