36 2014–15 Nhl Season Best Players of All Time

The 2014–15 NHL season was an exciting one with plenty of action and surprises.

It was the 98th season of operation for the National Hockey League and saw the Los Angeles Kings become the first team since the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006–07 to miss the playoffs after winning the Stanley Cup the previous season.

Meanwhile, the Boston Bruins became the first team since the 2009–10 Chicago Blackhawks to reach the Stanley Cup Finals in back-to-back years.

There were also some milestone moments to be celebrated, such as Jaromir Jagr becoming the NHL’s all-time leader in games played, and Alex Ovechkin becoming the first Russian-born player to reach 500 career goals.

All in all, the 2014–15 NHL season was a thrilling one with plenty of memorable moments.

Johnny Gaudreau is a 29-year-old American forward who currently plays for the Calgary Flames. Gaudreau was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the first round, 22nd overall of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

He then signed with Calgary as an unrestricted free agent in July 2014. In his rookie season (2014-15), Gaudreau set career highs in points (73) and assists (38). 

His 73 points were second highest ever to Jarome Iginla, while his 38 assists ranked third behind Patrick Kane and Phil Kessel.

The following season he improved on both numbers, scoring 94 points and assisting on 51 goals – good for fourth place all-time among rookies in both categories behind only. 

Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, and Mario Lemieux respectively; additionally he made his Stanley Cup playoff debut that year playing 11 games before being eliminated by Anaheim in the first round.

In 2016-17, Johnny continued where he left off from 2015-16 by setting new personal bests again with 97 points (41 goals + 62 assists) en route to being named runner-up for the Hart Memorial Trophy as MVP of the NHL playoffs after leading Calgary to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 2004. 

Injury has been a common theme throughout much of Johnny's professional career - missing over 60% of regular season games due to injury three times including 65 contests during 2017–18 which led some pundits [to] question whether or not this would be his last hurrah. 

However, at age 30 there is still plenty of hockey left inside “Johnny Hockey” so fingers crossed.

Johnny Gaudreau was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 104th overall slot of the 2011 NHL Draft. The left winger has spent his entire professional career with the Flames, debuting in 2014-15. 

Johnny is a prolific scorer, having scored at least 20 goals four times and 40 or more once during his time in Calgary. 

He also racked up over 100 points twice, earning him both an Art Ross Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy as MVP of the NHL's postseason competition. 

In April 2018, it was announced that Gaudreau had signed an eight-year contract extension with Calgary worth $49 million CAD (approximately £37 million GBP). 

Johnny is considered one of Canada’s most promising young players and holds dual citizenship with both Canada and the United States; he made his international debut for Team USA at age 19 against Denmark back in October 2013.

2. Mark Stone

Stone is a 30-year-old Canadian professional ice hockey right winger who currently plays for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). 

Stone was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the first round, sixth overall, at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

He made his NHL debut during the 2011–12 season and has since established himself as one of Ottawa's top offensive players. 

Stone won gold with Canada at both World Junior Championships in 2009 and 2013, as well as silver at both tournaments in 2012. He also played for Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

In 2018 he signed an eight-year contract extension with Ottawa worth $52 million CAD ($41 million USD). Stone has been involved in several off-ice incidents which have resulted in fines or suspensions from league authorities. 

These include a hit to Eric Staal that led to an eight-game suspension in December 2014 and homophobic slurs towards Philadelphia Flyers player Sean Couturier which resulted in him being suspended four games early. 

Into their playoff series that year, and an incident where he threw a punch at Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke which caused facial injuries requiring surgery Stone was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the 2010 NHL Draft.

Stone has played for Vegas Golden Knights, Ottawa Senators, and Canada during his playing career. Stone is a right-wing who shoots right. Stone has averaged over 20 points per season throughout his playing career so far. 

Stone signed with the Carolina Hurricanes as an unrestricted free agent in the 2019-20 season after leaving the Ottawa Senators.

3. Filip Forsberg

Filip Forsberg is a talented and fast player who has totaled over 100 points in each of his first three seasons in the NHL. 

Forsberg was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the third round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and made an immediate impact with them as a rookie, totaling 38 points in 82 games.

His breakout season came in 2017-18 when he tallied 78 points (41 goals, 37 assists) to lead all rookies and help Nashville clinch their first playoff berth since 2006. 

Although they were eliminated by Ottawa Senators in six games during the Conference Quarterfinals, Forsberg's performance throughout the playoffs was praised by many analysts as one of the best displays from any rookie during that year.

In 2018-19, Forsberg again led all rookies with 68 points (25 goals, 41 assists), helping Nashville reach their second consecutive Stanley Cup Finals but once again falling short against Toronto Maple Leafs. 

Despite being only 28 years old already Filip Forsberg looks like he has plenty more hockey left inside him and is expected to continue producing at a high level for several more seasons yet Filip Forsberg is a Swedish left winger who was drafted by the Nashville Predators in the 2012 NHL Draft.

He has since played for Washington Capitals and Sweden. Filip Forsberg is considered one of the best players in Europe, and he has already won several awards including the SHL MVP award (2013), Hart Memorial Trophy (2014), Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (2015), and Selke Award (2016). 

In 2016-17, Filip Forsberg had a breakout season with 39 goals and 71 points in 78 games, leading his team to the Stanley Cup Finals where they were defeated by Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1. Filip Forsberg is an excellent skater who can both stickhandle and skate past defenders on the rush.

He also possesses great hands and good shot accuracy which makes him very dangerous off of set pieces or from close range. 

With continued success at both the international level as well as with Nashville Predators, it's likely that Filip Forsberg will be regarded as one of history’s greatest hockey players within just a few years' time.

4. Pavel Datsyuk

Pavel Datsyuk is a Russian professional ice hockey player. He previously played for the Detroit Red Wings and was their captain from 2009 to 2015. Pavel Datsyuk was born on July 20th, 1978 in Sverdlovsk, Russia.

His family relocated to Yekaterinburg when he was three years old. 

While playing junior hockey with HC Sibir Novosibirsk, Pavel quickly developed into one of the best players in his league and attracted interest from several NHL teams including the Detroit Red Wings who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 1998.

After spending two seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Pavel made his debut with the Detroit Redwings during the 2001-02 season where he spent most of his time playing alongside fellow countryman Vladimir Konstantinov on what would become known as "The Triplets Line". 

In 2006-07 season, after recording 83 points (37 goals and 50 assists) over 82 games for Detroit's American Hockey League affiliate team Adirondack Phantoms, Pavel won both rookies of year honors as well as The MasterCard Memorial Cup awarded by Canadian Professional Ice Hockey League (CPIHL).

Following a successful 2007-08 campaign which saw him score 44 goals and 87 points over 80 games for Detroit - second only behind teammate Nicklas Lidstrom. 

Datsyuk captured both the scoring title and the Norris Trophy award as top defenseman in NHL respectively becoming only third player ever to win both awards within same calendar year; joining Gordie Howe (1952) & Bobby Orr (1970). 

After leading all Eastern Conference defensemen with 56 points during the 2008 playoffs; helping lead Red Wings to their tenth Stanley Cup championship against Pittsburgh Penguins – also winning Conn Smythe trophy.

Tt appeared that age may finally be catching up on arguably game's greatest Center fielder/defenseman at 33 years old but another stellar season followed lockout shortened 2012-13 campaign registering career highs 113 points.

While once again captained the club throughout entire postseason run culminating in another Championship victory against Boston Bruins en route to becoming first Russian national team member ever to hoist Lord Stanley’s cup on home soil following 5 previous defeats since Soviet Union’s last championship back in 1991.

5. Jimmy Howard

Jimmy Howard is an American goaltender who has played for the Detroit Red Wings since 2006. He was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2001.

Howard has won two Stanley Cups with Detroit, including in 2013-14 when he led all goaltenders with 41 wins and a 2.24 GAA. 

Injuries have been a problem for Howard over the past few seasons, limiting him to just 63 appearances between 2014 and 2018 combined due to various injuries sustained in each of those years (ankle, knee).

Despite this impediment, Howard remains one of the most successful goalies in NHL history, having posted back-to-back 50+ win seasons and leading his team to at least one playoff appearance every year since 2006 except for 2012 when he missed almost all of the season due to injury as well. 

After spending time with Grand Rapids Griffins during training camp this season, it seems likely that if healthy Howard will retire after playing his tenth full NHL season next year.

6. Semyon Varlamov

Semyon Varlamov is a Russian goaltender who has played for the Colorado Avalanche since he was drafted in 2008. He has been named to two NHL All-Star Games, and won the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goalie in 2013.

Injuries have limited him to just 49 games over the past two seasons, but he remains one of the most promising goaltenders in hockey. Varlamov was born on April 27th 1988, making him 34 years old at this time (2018). 

His height is 6' 2" tall and his weight is 209 pounds – both of which are typical measurements for goaltenders.

Semyon Varlamov started playing hockey when he was only six years old; before that he participated in track and field events such as long jump and triple jump. 

After starting out with a team called Lokomotiv Moscow, Varlamov made his professional debut with CSKA Moscow during the 2003–04 season – aged 18 years old. 

He spent five seasons with CSKA Moscow before moving to Europe to play for HC Sochi (2006) and then SC Bern (2008).

The Colorado Avalanche selected Semyon Varlamov 38th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft after watching him play for Severstal Cherepovets during that year's playoff run.

7. Ben Bishop

Ben Bishop is a professional goaltender who played for the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2013 to 2017. 

He was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and traded to Tampa Bay along with a fourth-round pick in 2010 for Martin St.

Louis. Bishop has won two Stanley Cup championships (2012, 2016) with Tampa Bay and he led them to their first ever Presidents' Trophy as regular season champions in 2015–16. 

In addition, he appeared in three All-Star Games (2011, 2012, 2016), recorded an Olympic Gold Medal victory over Sweden at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and set a franchise record for saves made during a playoff campaign with 569 in 54 games during his tenure with Tampa Bay's run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016–17 Ben Bishop is a goaltender for the St.

Louis Blues and was drafted by them in 2005. He has since played for Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars, and the United States National Team. 

Ben Bishop has been very successful throughout his career and has won several awards such as being named to the NHL All-Star Game twice (2015 & 2017) and winning the Vezina Trophy in 2016.

8. Tuukka Rask

Tuukka Rask is a goaltender for the Boston Bruins. He was drafted by the Bruins in 2006, and has since played over 600 games with the team. In 2016, he led all NHL goaltenders in save percentage (.924).

He also won the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2013 and 2017. Rask was awarded Sweden's Gold Medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics for his performance as a netminder for Team Finland during that tournament. 

Tuukka is married to Saara Aalto, an opera singer who formerly performed under her birth name Sanna Kyllönen Tuukka Rask is a goaltender for the Boston Bruins and was drafted in the first round of the 2005 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He has played for Ilves since 2006-07 season, posting a record of 117-84-15 with six shutouts and a save percentage of .915 over that time period. 

In his rookie campaign with Boston in 2007–08, he posted a 19-14-5 record and 2.29 goals against average while playing all 48 games en route to being named Rookie of The Year. 

Since then, he's been one of the most consistent goaltenders in the league, winning at least 30 games every year except for 2012–13 when he had an injury-plagued season (17 wins).

On May 1st, 2019 Tuukka Rask announced his retirement from professional hockey after 20 seasons with 401 regular season victories and two Stanley Cups as part of the Boston Bruins organization.

Marián Hossa is a Hall of Fame-bound right wing who has spent his entire NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks. 

He was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (27th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, but never played for them because he chose to play for HC Kladno in his native Czech Republic instead.

The Blackhawks acquired him midway through the 2005–06 season and he went on to score over 600 goals and 1,000 points in Chicago's black & gold jersey, winning two Stanley Cups along the way (2009, 2010). 

Injuries have been a somewhat common occurrence throughout Hossa's lengthy career; however, even when sidelined he has always contributed significantly both offensively and defensively for Chicago - making him one of their most respected players ever.

On 10 May 2020 it was announced that Marián Hossa had been elected into Hockey Hall of Fame as an inaugural member alongside former teammate Patrick Kane.

10. Niklas Hjalmarsson

Niklas Hjalmarsson is a defenceman for the Chicago Blackhawks. He was drafted by the St Louis Blues in the first round, sixth overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

He has also played for the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings. In 2017-18 he led all NHL defensemen with 132 blocked shots and was fifth in points (51). 

Hjalmarsson has won two Stanley Cups with Chicago (2010, 2015) and one with Edmonton (2006).

He is married to Anna-Karin Johnsrud Sundsvall and they have three children - Alexander John Lundqvist (born 2009), Emilie Sofia Lundqvist (born 2012) and Isac Oscar Lundqvist (born 2016). 

Niklas Hjalmarsson is a Swedish citizen but grew up playing hockey in Finland before switching allegiance to Sweden at age 15 as his parents were living there at that time.

Niklas Hjalmarsson is a defenseman for the Chicago Blackhawks. He has played for various teams throughout his playing career, most notably with the HV71 team in Sweden and the Bolzano HC team in Italy. 

Niklas was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks 108th overall in 2005. 3. He made his NHL debut with them during the 2007–08 season and has since been a fixture on their blueline, appearing in over 500 games for them to date.

4. Niklaus also represented Sweden at international level on numerous occasions, including at both World Championships and Olympic Games tournaments. In 2018 he signed an extension with the Blackhawks that will keep him at least until 2021.

11. Corey Crawford

Corey Crawford is a 38-year-old goaltender for the Chicago Blackhawks. 

He was drafted by the Blackhawks in the first round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and has since played over 700 games with them, recording 290 wins and 146 losses.

Crawford won his first Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2010 and again in 2013. In 2015 he helped lead Canada to their fourth consecutive Gold Medal at the World Championships, becoming only the second goalie ever to do so (the other being Dominik Hasek).

Outside of hockey, Crawford enjoys spending time with his wife Kari and their two young sons Camden and Caden. 

Corey Crawford was drafted 52nd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2003. He has played for them since 2005 and is currently their starting goaltender.

In total, he has played 901 regular season games, recording a save percentage of .923 during that time. In the playoffs, he has recorded a record of 7-6 with 2 shutouts in 17 games played (10 starts). 

Corey Crawford won his first Stanley Cup as part of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013-14 season and also represented Canada at both Olympic Games (2010) and World Championships (2014).

He signed an extension with Chicago through 2020 earlier this year which shows his commitment to playing for them long term.

12. Dion Phaneuf

Dion Phaneuf is a veteran defenceman who has played for Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings. Dion was drafted by the Flames in the first round (7th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

He spent four seasons with them before being traded to the Maple Leafs in 2007. In his seven seasons with the Maple Leafs, he won two Stanley Cups (2008-09 & 2011-12). He also appeared in five Finals appearances, winning one (2012-13).

On July 1st, 2013 Dion signed a six year contract extension with Toronto worth $34 million ($10 million AAV). The deal made him an unrestricted free agent at season's end and he decided to sign with Ottawa instead on July 1st 2014. 

With Ottawa Dion reached his fourth Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2017 and again lost to Chicago Blackhawks.

Hudler is a right wing who was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2003. Hudler has played for HC Vsetín, Havířov Panthers and the Calgary Flames. Hudler was named to the Czech Republic's World Championship team in 2004 and 2006 as well as their Olympic team in 2010.

Hudler captain of HC Vsetín from 2007-2010 before being traded to the Florida Panthers in 2011 where he spent four seasons before joining the Calgary Flames in 2013. 

In 2009, Hudler won his first Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks and scored two goals during their championship run that year including an overtime game-winner against Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson which led to one of sports' most famous memes "The Pass." 

After spending three years with Calgary, Hudler signed with Vancouver Canucks on July 1st, 2017 but only played six games before returning to Europe later that season signing a one year contract with Russian club Avangard Omsk.

David Backes was born on May 1, 1984 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is 6'3" and weighs 215 pounds. David is a centre/right winger and has played for the St Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, and Chicago Blackhawks over his career to date.

David has scored over 150 goals and 350 points in his NHL career thus far, making him one of the most prolific scorers in league history. 

His defensive skills have also been praised by many fans and analysts alike as he consistently puts up strong numbers both offensively and defensively throughout his career - something that very few players can claim to do successfully.

David Backes was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2003 and played for them until 2021. David Backes has represented the United States at two Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in 2010. 

David Backes is one of the most successful players in NHL history, amassing over 1,000 points during his playing career.

Dubnyk is a 36-year-old goaltender who was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. Dubnyk has played for the Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators in his NHL career.

In 2012, Dubnyk helped Canada win gold at the IIHF World Championships. Dubnyk is a three-time Vezina Trophy nominee and two-time winner of the Jennings Award as the top goalie in the NHL during the regular season.

In 2017, Dubnyk led all goaltenders with 41 wins and finished second in goals against average (2.01). 

Dubnyk announced his retirement from professional hockey on April 13th, 2018 after 18 seasons with the Ottawa Senators Dubnyk is a well-known goaltender in the NHL, having played for Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes, Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks.

Dubnyk has been very successful in his career with a record of 478 wins and 347 losses which shows that he knows how to win games. Dubnyk was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2004 where he spent four seasons before being traded to Nashville in 2008. 

After spending two more years with the Predators, Dubnyk was traded to the Coyotes where he had his most success as a starter until being traded to Minnesota at the end of the 2016-17 season.

In 2018-19 season, Dubnyk led all goaltenders with 42 wins putting him one victory away from breaking Patrick Roy's franchise record. Dubnyk will continue playing for both Arizona and Minnesota this upcoming season but is expected retire after 2020-21 campaign.

16. Ryan Getzlaf

Getzlaf is a veteran of the NHL and has played for the Anaheim Ducks since he was drafted in 2005. He’s been an important part of the team, both on and off the ice, throughout his career.

Getzlaf started his career as a bottom-six forward but has developed into one of the best two-way forwards in hockey. 

His offensive skills are complemented by strong defensive playmaking abilities which have made him one of the most consistent scorers in league history.

Getzlaf is married to actress Alyssa Milano and they have three children together: Tyus, Griffin, and Evelyn. 

He’s also father to Ryan Jr., who plays for Western Hockey League (WHL) team Seattle Thunderbirds as well as Bretton Tousignant who plays NCAA Division I hockey with Boston University Bruins Ryan Getzlaf was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2003.

He played for the Ducks until he retired in 2022. Getzlaf is multiple winner of the Stanley Cup and has been an All-Star nine times. In 2013, he was awarded the Ted Lindsay Award as MVP of the playoffs; this award is given to the best player in hockey postseason play.

Jhonas Enroth is a goaltender in the NHL who has played for the Buffalo Sabres, Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators. He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the third round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Enroth made his NHL debut with the Sabres in 2008. In 2012, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks. He was traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2014. Enroth won the Vezina Trophy in 2013–14, becoming the first Swedish goaltender to win the award.

Enroth was traded to the Ottawa Senators in January 2017. He announced his retirement from the NHL on 10 January 2017. 

Enroth was inducted into the Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2017. Jhonas Enroth was drafted 46th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

He played for Örebro HK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) before coming over to North America to play for the Sabres. Enroth made his NHL debut with the Sabres in 2007 and has played for them ever since. 

He is a goaltender and has played for Sweden in numerous international competitions, including the World Championships and the Olympics.

Enroth is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Sabres, in 2013 and 2015. He has also been named to the NHL All-Star team twice. Enroth is married and has two children. 

He is rumoured to be a possible trade target for the Buffalo Sabres in the upcoming season. Enroth is a well-liked player by his teammates and is a key member of the team.

Jonathan Bernier is a goaltender who has played in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the San Jose Sharks. Bernier was drafted in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks.

Bernier made his NHL debut with the Sharks in 2009. Bernier played two seasons with the Sharks before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2013. Bernier has spent the majority of his time with the Maple Leafs, appearing in 207 games.

Bernier led the Maple Leafs to the playoffs in 2014 and 2015, but they were eliminated in the first round both times. In April of this year, Bernier was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. 

Bernier has appeared in 27 games for the Kings, posting a 14-10-2 record with a 2.36 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.

Bernier is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, having played in the 2013 and 2017 playoffs with the Sharks.

Tanner Glass was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Glass has played for the Penguins since the 2003-2004 season.

Glass has played in 549 career NHL games, all with the Penguins. Glass has scored 94 goals and added 163 assists for 269 points in his NHL career. 

Glass has represented Canada in international play on numerous occasions, most notably at the 2006 and 2011 World Championships.

Glass was a member of the Stanley Cup-winning Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009. Glass is out of contract with the Penguins at the end of the 2016-2017 season. 

Glass has been a member of the NHLPA Executive Committee since the 2013-2014 season. Glass is currently a free agent and is looking to continue his NHL career.

Tanner Glass was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the 265th overall pick in the 2003 NHL draft. Glass played for the Panthers from 2007 to 2018. Glass had a career high of 39 points in the 2013-14 season. 

Glass was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in the 2018-19 season. In the 2019-20 season, Glass was traded to the Winnipeg Jets.

Glass has played in 207 NHL games. Glass has scored eight goals and 19 points in his career. Glass is a physical player who is known for his hits. Glass is expected to join the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2020-21 season.
